  • My take on Ayanokouji vs Light in Outsmarting. These are two beloved characters for since Death Note is one of my top 5 anime and Classroom of the Elite is my favorite LN series. Hope you enjoy, feel free to share your opinions in the comments.

Here is some of my reasoning on why the categories are distributed this way. Feel free to disagree to debate my view.
    FSIQ
This should be relatively self-explanatory. The closest categories are VCI and PRI. Ayanokouji takes VCI due to speaking multiple languages fluently and having a better knowledge base. He takes PRI due to multiple feats with better spatial reasoning than Light’s camera feat. Maintaining a mental map of the entire island during both island exams and his spatial reasoning is seen in his hand-eye coordination multiple times. (V4.5 Volleyball, V8 MTC, Y2V8 Ski Trip). None of the other indexes in FSIQ are close.
    EQ
Here the closest categories are Emotional Understanding and Emotional Engagement. Ayanokouji takes EU due to his better knowledge of psychology he used in his strategy and manipulation, and despite appearing emotionless his fundamental understanding of emotional concepts is very high. EE is close due to Ayanokouji’s ability to construct and maintain a fake personality for months before deciding it wasn’t worth the effort to continue.
    Manipulation
Logical Manipulation and Mass Manipulation are the closest here. Light actually has decent Logical Manipulation which is best seen in getting Naomi Misora to divulge her real name which allowed Light to kill her. However, Ayanokouji just has better feats here in his long-term manipulation of Sakayanagi during the second half of year 1, and his manipulation of Ryuuen in the X arc. Mass Manipulation is even closer between them since Light doesn’t have good feats here without the Death Note, however with the Death Note his manipulation feats are slightly better than Ayanokouji’s here. Ayanokouji’s best mass manipulation would be either his Y1V6 letter strategy or his rumor strategy in Y1V9. His letter strategy manipulated class A, B, and C students as well as school personnel, and his rumor strategy manipulated Nagumo, Ichinose, Class B, and Sakayanagi. In terms of direct, indirect, and emotional manipulation Ayanokouji surpasses Light.
    Deception
Deception is straightforward, Light takes acting skills and verbal deception while Ayanokouji takes strategic deception, misdirection, and information control. Light’s ability to deceive the task force is a strong feat here while Ayanokouji uses more subtle deception such as his Island exam strategies, the X arc, and the MTC.
    Strategy
Strategy is a category where Ayanokouji just has stronger feats in every category here. His X arc strategy has many layers which lasted for several volumes and is more complex than Light’s most complex strategy being his memory loss plan. On the other end of the spectrum Ayanokouji’s strategies don’t contain unnecessary or wasted moves given how he prioritizes efficiency. The closest category here would be strategy adaptability, but Ayanokouji should take it by how his X arc strategy changed based on Kushida’s betrayal coming to light and his father’s arrival at ANHS.
    Planning
Planning is closer than strategy, but Ayanokouji still takes this comfortably. His ability to plan for almost every possibility and have contingency plans in place is just beyond Light. The same goes for his LT planning and risk calculation since Light’s longest plan was memory loss which was a few months, but Ayanokouji’s longest plans are years long. Light takes planning preparation due to his more apparent preparation in things like his fake drawer, switching Rem and Ryuk’s notebooks to benefit him later and more. Ayanokouji is more of a passive planner, letting his opponents make moves and finding ways to turn a situation beneficial to him so Light’s more active approach to planning takes the edge here.
    Foresight
Ayanokouji’s predictions and countering is fairly evident. Light consistently fell for L’s traps which helped prove to him that Light was indeed Kira, while Ayanokouji uses other people’s attempts to trap him or their strategies against them. This is how he won the first island exam for class D, how he won his group in the Zodiac exam, how he learned about Kushida’s betrayal, how he ensured Class D won paper shuffle, and how he trapped Ryuuen in his own plan. His predictions are longer and more accurate having predicted Ichinose’s class would fall to class D over a year in advance and showed his prediction accuracy by anticipating essentially word for word a conversation of 7 people and used that to trap Kushida during paper shuffle.
    Reasoning
Here may be the most controversial section but I have Ayanokouji taking all 3 main Logical reasoning categories with better feats, logical process, and methodology. For example, a deduction like deducing Ryuuen’s plan on the first island exam and that he was working with Class A from just noticing the dirt in Ibuki’s nails is very impressive since afterward we get the logical steps Ayanokouji had to make that deduction. Light takes intuition since many of his deductions came from a conclusion he couldn’t yet prove but he acted in a way that assumed it was. For example, his Yotsuba arc induction involved his intuition that Kira could kill in other ways aside from a heart attack.
    Methods
In terms of methods Ayanokouji and Light split these based on their strengths. Light takes Leadership, Improvisation, and likely creativity (which is the most subjective), while Ayanokouji takes fluid and crystallized, tactics, decision making, and trap setting.
    Info Gathering
Ayanokouji takes everything here and it isn’t particularly close. Light was unable to notice Raye Pember following him until Ryuk told him. He didn’t notice Misa following him the day after they first met, he didn’t realize Naomi Misora gave him a fake name until after Ryuk laughed about it for the second time, and was unable to perceive that L had seen through his deception and was almost completely certain Light was Kira for months. Ayanokouji notices even the smallest and insignificant seeming details and can retain that information in his perfect memory. He noticed a random mall employees ID badge and was able to remember his name hours later when it would be of use to him, and he was able to figure out Ibuki’s intentions on the Island after noticing dirt under her nails. His Psychological profiling/cold reading also exceeds Light his profiling of almost every character in the series is far more in depth than any of Light’s analysis.

EQ : Engagement goes to Ayanokoji and EQ : Understanding would be debate , Direct Manipulation should go to Light , Individual Manipulation is also debate but I agreed it goes to Ayanokoji
Overall Planning Ayanokoji would take it but if Light can use a plan better than memory loss then he would take it or not Ayanokoji takes it easily
Mid Dif is too low , I think High Dif is good diff

I agree that both of them are goats and both are fantastic characters. However I'm not trying to be toxic when I say by comparing their feats objectively this isn't all that close. You are welcome to have your own opinion and disagree and you are welcome to try and explain why you disagree, but I have read both of these series myself and I am familiar with both characters very well.
