even though she remaind cold and distant, the interviewer broke through with her sincerity and earnestness. 7:00, that was a genuine moment right there.
In later parts especially the final one i think Madonna grew to like her and got that Heike wasn't out to get her but genuinely interested in her and also pretty well informed and familiar with her body of work. Heike is a Madonna fan afterall.
My favourite Madonna interview. Range of emotions from ice cold to defensive to warm to revealing very personal details that she usually does not give away so easily, that looks like as a thank-you gesture to Heike for being goofy, trying to cheer her up, and at the same time doing an excellent job as an interviewer.
I like this video very much because of Heike Makatsch. She's so sweet, and she never wavered when Madonna was rather cold in the interview. Heike remained her sweet self. She's a wonderful actress in her own right ... for example, in "Aimee & Jaguar" and "Love Actually," as well as her interviews. She's lovely.
I don’t particular enjoy her interview. Her questions seem to corner her interviewee to a certain response. It’s very annoying especially when what you are implying isn’t true.
I like the Interviewer Heike..she knows how to extract things from Madonna..who confessed that the pain influences her to be more creative with the writing of songs. Great job.💞
"That is what it is, it is the sound of my voice and the emotions in my voice" =🎯💯 so true. That is exactly how her voice is. She has this incredibly beautiful storytelling voice. Combine that with her insights into human existence and into herself then you get Madonna. She, her voice in particular is absolutely brilliant. She has a gorgeous speaking voice too. As gorgeous as her face and her eyes.
What I respect about Madonna is the fact that she responds in a very honest way, she could have written a whole book of lies about themerging into European music when actually what DID happened was that those collaborations emerged only because of her working with Nellee Hooper. She's frank about it and doesn't make an entanglement about it.
Thats actually a reaally incisive and insightful interviewer, really .. She really dug very personal questions from Madonna when the superstar is kind of economical with her answers .. but the interviewer did lead her to pretty in depth answers with constant prodding and walking on the edge between annoying Madge and culling the details out .. and eventually loosening up and making Madonna laugh at the some point later ..
She was very patient with the obvious nervous and awkward interviewer. I love her interviews whether she's being goofy or more demure and reserved. She's intelligent in het responses and sometimes refreshingly candid for someone who is has very much been aware of the power of image. She doesn't take herself seriously as a celebrity. She takes herself very seriously as an Artist and a business woman. Her tenacity to go for exactly what she wants is admirable.
A very revealing interview. At first I thought, oh boy what kind of questions are these. but she did ask excellent questions. Good job Madonna. That's why I love u!
What happened after 1999? Did she meet Guy Ritchie and she changed? I think if someone is so mean there must be a deeply rooted reason for it. In Madonna's case it was probably the loss of her mother and the fact she had to grow up without her.
I knew Heike from her days as an exchange student in New Mexico(she was my brother's first girlfriend) and then met up with her in 1994 in Germany when she was working for Viva. She never changed with fame as far as I saw. Very cool always. Our waitress recognized her and Heike was very sweet and low key. Watching this I see Heike just as she is, sweet, honest and asking really decent questions. Some see it as annoying but it's just being honest and maybe somewhat uncomfortable because she asking quite probing questions(German mentality). That plus the interviewee is a pompous woman. I'm not really even sure Heike is a fan. We were into punk and new wave but this was her job.
Paul Smart You'd do well considering that in Germany this interviewer is a very well known actress who was lucky enough to act beside Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Keira knightley, Andrew Lincoln and bill nighy in Love actually.
Why does it matter that english is not her first language if she speaks it almost perfectly? Your statement would've been ok if she was struggling to speak english but still pulled the interview to turn out well.
On the contrary, i think she is very intellectual. I think she is very nervous because she is possibly a big fan of hers. However Madonna isnt a Lady and doesnt make anyone feel at ease. I think she thrives on people being uncomfortable to ease her own insecurities.
She may be a "big fan,"and I'd be nervous too, if I was presented with someone who is aloof and behaves as if she is bored, irritated and doesn't really want to be there. Madonna was a tough interview, and in my opinion, there is no excuse for rudeness and disrespect of another human being. I don't care who you are!
Yes, Heike has always been a huge Madonna fan. She's said it several times when she worked at VIva that was her favorite artist and always requested her videos, that's also why is she is so familiar with Madonna's body of work. I think she did okay, being 23 at the time and doing this not in her mother tongue German but in English.
When Heike ask about having her heart broken is the essence of humanity at that moment you literally see the vulnerability. What was said about people deriving pleasure from trying to knock her down is So True with our society.
I am sick of some of you idiots criticizing the interviewer. Her English was not perfect, and she was nervous interviewing the most famous woman in the world. I enjoyed her and she held her own just fine. Madonna was in a mood anyway, and if you watch until the end, Madonna validates her and the interview and it was adorable. Plus, Madonna has never been as beautiful as she was here.
Not really. Madonna has been worst in others. She's just serious; she's answering all of the questions in its entirety. I have to add, this interviewer is quite sexy and plus, smart. Check this at 6:50.
i think she's just not a fan of people pleasing girls and doesnt change her behavior to match with them, thats why this contrast exists and she seems very cold here. i think she doesn't want to change for people to feel more comfortable. tbh i admire her. also 6:57 is such a cute moment.. you can tell shes not actually mean, she's just a no-BS-person. you can tell she probably also must have thought the interviewer was cute
I agree with you. Madonna said herself that she hates when interviewers ask the same questions over and over again. Although I admire this interviewer's spunk for not reacting to Madonna's aloof nature.
I've seen this before with other interviewers whose first language is not English - Madonna gets testy if their sentence structure or way of asking things doesn't work for her. In this case, the German woman is asking yes/no questions, sometimes putting words in her mouth or saying, "I heard that you" or "I read that you"..... and you can see M cringe. She's a tough cookie and I'd dance with her but wouldn't want to interview her.
this is such a painful interview to watch...kudos to the lady interviewer for remaining calm and collected in the midst of someone so intimidating as madonna...
You can tell, this girl is incredibly nervous and overwhelmed, which I think is quite sweet. Unfortunately Madonna is cold as ice here .. that hurts even me while I'm watching. What a relief at 7:03!
I admire this interviewer, as I feel so uncomfortable for her. I think if I had Madonna's fame, I would feel SO much gratitude to be in her position, but during the height of her fame, she seemed so aloof, and irritated. Geez, you are famous because audiences embraced you, and bought your music!
Well said. Now here is Heike meeting David Bowie, another legend, who was so easy going and seemed to enjoy her way more. What a difference for the interview it makes, if the person who gets interviewed doesn't have an attitude and looks like he doesn't want to be there: th-cam.com/video/6ib3sbHvxQs/w-d-xo.html
You are right. The interviewer was too nervous and was doing a bad job asking the questions. She was mincing words and having a hard time trying to say what she meant, and she sounded like she was trying to have the answer before giving Madonna a chance to speak.
Okay the 90s were totally an improvement in pop music. Even the queen recognizes to be a fan pf Björk and Massive Attack...but know she says she is a fan of Nicki Minaj and LMFAO. I miss those times.
Look at the difference when it's this same interviewer being interviewed. I can't speak German, but see just how much more personality she has. She makes so much more effort to be polite and cooperative. . Heike Makatsch backstage bei WettenDass
You can't compare these interviews. Heike was late 30s in the interview you linked, a grown up, mature and confident lady 14 years after the Madonna interview, where she was just 24 and a lil baby in the biz but already interviewing big world stars. Heike deserves way more credit. I bet most of you people would shit your pants if you'd have to interview the biggest female pop star you're probably also fans of. Besides, Viva was very restrictive of what kinda questions she can ask since it was a music channel aimed mostly at teens. Heike herself said years later that it was her first big interview and that she's embarrassed about it all the years later. And to be fair, Madonna was quite bitchy here, making it harder for her than it already was.
everybody in the comments is making up a huge drama regarding this interview. In my opinion this is often a projection of ones personality, insecurities etc or prejudice.. This was an interview, made by a talented but young/inexperienced pop/TV journalist with a great Artist, one Pop 'Godess', a legend if you like. And this went the way it should considering the above circumstances.. nothing special. I enjoyed it very much 😍 It provided a nice/valuable flashback into the good old 20th century.
Ok, dont blame Madonna for it!!!! I loved the interviewer was so sweet, but everytime she asked something and Madonna answered her, she asked the same thing over and over again like expecting something different!!! Sorry but it would be a headache for me too. However I´ve never seen M so serious!! Like someone said before, she looked tired...
Gorgeous thoughtful articulate Madonna, and such a spontaneous cute and girlish interviewer. The interviewer is so pleasantly different from the lamestream media/ so unlike the boring Barbara Walters.
actually Heike Makatsch is a famous german actress, also playing in international films, like Resident Evil.... so i guess sitting in front of Madonna makes eveyone nervous
Madonna is a hitch here. There'll come a day when nobody will take the time to interview her or care what she has to say, maybe then she'll regrets treating people like this
Madonna never met Bjork when that song was wrote, it was all done through Nellie Hooper. Bjork herself said she never met her, and really wrote it as a favour to Nellie because he asked her. Its a good song, and very obvious Bjork written
I guess this is because Bjork wasn't nice at all towards Madonna back then, when she got asked first about their collaboration in the song Bedtime Story.
On VIVA, those were the times: Videojockeys (Talkmaster) were all young......(Raab,Shirin, MinhKhai, Daisy Dee, Enie, Mola,Alex Bechtel....)..Ohhhhh....Makatsch was so great... I was a big fan of her... And the best of all was Stefan Raab....
I'm impressed. At the beginning I cringed and thought what an awful, overly nervous interviewer, until I realized that she totally persued her aims, shrouding herself in an innocent and seemingly obsequious attitude, reassuring smiles and using compliments, so she didn't appear bold and pushing. She made her talk incl. about intimate stuff, even though Madonna displayed a totally reticent and rather dismissive attitude right from the beginning. Good job, I'd say...
People describe Madonna as "cold and distant", but I see something different. I see her as introspective with a very high level of self-awareness. Cold and distant is often a misunderstanding of this personality type. People with high levels of self-awareness are very successful, especially artists.
Franka Potente, who is also German so maybe it's the typical German look and personality. Both women were born in the 1970s in Western Germany in the same state.
Madonna starts the interview very distant and cold because she thinks the interviewer is trying make fun or look down on her. When she realizes the interviewer is just a little goofy and curious and fangirling it breaks the ice.
I watched this video once and Madonna seemed to me a little bit cold and distant. Now,at a second view,I see that the interviewer could look a little bit bothering
It's Leo to Leo energy coming to play. Madonna and heike makatsch are both leonines on extreme and opposite dimensions. Madonna is clearly on the dark side here, arrogant to a fault and heike is very sunny and bubbly which is the standout trait of a leo. That's what it is, a Leo to Leo ego trip.
I mean... Yes an interviewer may not click with the interviewee for whatever reasons annoying etc but either the interviewer should get the picture and somehow turn the interview to another direction or cut it short and if not the interviewee should cut it short because in the end if not both parties waste each other's time and don't deliver decent content. It's what I think anyways, it takes two...
hmm well first of all, this was a big deal for Heike and for her channel Viva at the time. They flew her from Germany to the US and actually got an hour and devoted a whole day to this. They made a Madonna day and the interview was the highlight. It was a young channel whose audience was mainly teeangers and people in their early 20s so naturally the people working and hosting there like Heike weren't 45 year olds with decades of experience but relatable vjs in their early 20s. Afterall Madonna is a popstar not a politician. Heike's english wasn't perfect but certainly good enough and she's informed, interested and friendly. I actually think with most other guests, she would have done just fine. It was Madonna's attitude for the most part that made this difficult but you don't cut an interview short after flying in from Europe and knowing your channel commits a whole day to this.
Sure it can be a big deal for anyone and they could devote an entire day, week, month, year, whatever even fly around the world but if it doesn't work perhaps there needs to be a quick change in the direction of the interview otherwise it doesn't make for good tv.
@@f_t_re_f_rever Well in Part 4, it seems like she cracked her a little. We got a few little smiles from Madonna and she seemed a little more relaxed so i'm glad they didn't cut it short. It was still interesting to watch with some interesting questions and answers, not all of them but some.
dioioego Björk herself said they never met, rumor has it she refused to meet Madonna because she wasn't comfortable with the idea. About björk "signing like a dog" well honey at least Björk has enough respect for her fans to actually sign live o LIVE concerts.
First of all,the interviewer was very very nervous & that's natural for a fan to react, but the questions she was asking was very wrong. They sound like telling madonna how the interviewer thinks than letting Madonna explain the true situation. That made Madonna pissed off....I myself find the questions irritating. Madonna was trying to be calm by knowing her she might just leave the set. I'm sure after that,Madonna will never wanna have another interview with her.
yeah she comes across really cold in this interview...but then again she'll answer the question and the interviewer will ask the same question all over again
And timid people can also be confident and strong in their own way, Madonna is just problematic and lacks humor the interviewer is not the issue, Madonna is, she is like this with most people who interview her
I think they are both really pretty and sexy here in different way. I just wish Madonna would loosen up and remember what it's like when you're 23 and starting out and not just be an ice queen.
Completely agree. It's almost like she was like "I don't believe you Madonna" or "that's not the answer I wanted so I'll ask and ask again until you change your answer". Madonna probably got tired. Also the interviewer seemed to be asking questions based on assumptions derived from tabloid crap.
Madonna looks like she´s done 100 hundred interviews that day and is saying herself all the time, "if not for the money they pay me, I wouldn´t be here not for a second" but Madonna is always like that, just like in this interview it´s too evident.
Jelly Bean Benitez owns 1 percent of Ms Madonna....a 1 Percent she still made him fight to get ....His Influence can't be denied? especially when talking about Latin Influence.
even though she remaind cold and distant, the interviewer broke through with her sincerity and earnestness. 7:00, that was a genuine moment right there.
+hilmir Yeh that was quite sweet actually, made me chuckle
In later parts especially the final one i think Madonna grew to like her and got that Heike wasn't out to get her but genuinely interested in her and also pretty well informed and familiar with her body of work. Heike is a Madonna fan afterall.
damn, the poor girl had to work REAL hard. Madonna was very aggressive in this interview
My favourite Madonna interview. That's why she looked so familiar! She had a brief part on it but I love Aimee & Jaguar and this film always made me cry.
I don’t particular enjoy her interview. Her questions seem to corner her interviewee to a certain response. It’s very annoying especially when what you are implying isn’t true.
She can be cold and stand-off(ish) especially, with other females, though here it pisses me off as the Interviewer is sweet, kind and patient.
Heike became a star in her own right she is good singer and a brilliant actress.
I like the Interviewer Heike..she knows how to extract things from Madonna..who confessed that the pain influences her to be more creative with the writing of songs. Great job.💞

yeah good for her she's great - it's funny seeing madonna becoming uncomfortable trying to hide behind the mask that Heike is trying to get behind
I love this interview

I believe this interview was one of the best to be Honest.
Heike asks Madonna with no fright questions normally she would not answer
she's so nervous its kinda cute
She was 24 back then and Madonna was probably the biggest star she ever interviewed.
I think that the interviewer is really good and it's rare to see a Madonna interview where they talk about her music!
She's always been a very mean person. Ask anyone that has encountered her from 1986-1999
What happened after 1999? Did she meet Guy Ritchie and she changed?
I think if someone is so mean there must be a deeply rooted reason for it. In Madonna's case it was probably the loss of her mother and the fact she had to grow up without her.
Absolutely agree with you! She's sooooo cold in this video,no emotions or even smiling !!!
I knew Heike from her days as an exchange student in New Mexico(she was my brother's first girlfriend) and then met up with her in 1994 in Germany when she was working for Viva. I'm not really even sure Heike is a fan. We were into punk and new wave but this was her job.
That's very cool that Heike is so down to earth. Madonna doesn't seem to be. Heike seems very charming in an innocent way.
I think the interviewer did well considering that english is not her first language.

Madonna starts the interview very distant and cold because she thinks the interviewer is trying make fun or look down on her. When she realizes the interviewer is just a little goofy and curious and fangirling it breaks the ice.
Why Madonna always has that eyelid blinking? She seems very try hard to stay distant.. Heike is not nervous.. it is her vivid, genuine additude..
Man, she looks so unfriendly. No reason to be like that, no matter how sick of interviews she was.
I watched this video once and Madonna seemed to me a little bit cold and distant. Now,at a second view,I see that the interviewer could look a little bit bothering
They would get along better if there wasn't a camera and interview structure under a set hurrying time.
not sure what people are talking about . she was open and frank and gave a god insight to how she works. what's the problem.
people just hating on Madonna
loool the interviewer looks like a lamb she's so sweet and nice to madonna, and she even tried to joke a bit but madge was just like -.- whatever xD
Brava tesoro mio
It's like watching an interview with Dumb and Dumber!
"I must've been Latin in a previous life or something.."
Uhhh Madonna
You're Italian, the motherland of Latin. Lol
I like Madonna.
I actually think they got along well, but of course they both have very different personalities and that is reflected.
hmm well first of all, this was a big deal for Heike and for her channel Viva at the time.
Madonna was fortunate blessed so much education and training at her university and her high schools
I honestly dont blame Madonna for being annoyed...
Madonna lied. Madonna never met Bjork. Nellee Hooper got the song from Bjork, that's it
dioioego Björk herself said they never met, rumor has it she refused to meet Madonna because she wasn't comfortable with the idea. About björk "signing like a dog" well honey at least Björk has enough respect for her fans to actually sign live o LIVE concerts.
Because Björk said so. And I'd trust Björk over Madonna anytime.
Madonna is such a goddess.

Interview: Heike Makatsch singt Hildegard Knef - HILDE Soundtrack
She looks at her as if she was a cockroach
First of all,the interviewer was very very nervous & that's natural for a fan to react, but the questions she was asking was very wrong. They sound like telling madonna how the interviewer thinks than letting Madonna explain the true situation. That made Madonna pissed off....I myself find the questions irritating. Madonna was trying to be calm by knowing her she might just leave the set. I'm sure after that,Madonna will never wanna have another interview with her.
In later parts of the interview, Madonna grew more comfortable with her. In the end she even said it was okay and gave her a big smile.
Björk is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! Björk is very popular in the 'underground' techno side of America that the main stream sheeple don't care for.
@Kaleido37 yes, I felt sorry for the interviewer. She was so sweet.
yeah she comes across really cold in this interview...but then again she'll answer the question and the interviewer will ask the same question all over again
Madonna is very inteligent. I love her.
+ « Even M Looked So Serious , She Was So Precious !! »
100% X3
0:50 there Madonna lied! Later she said in interviews she did Take a Bow to impress Alan Parker to get the role
Awwwwwwwee 7:00😍
Madonna has a hard time with people who aren't confident and i think thats the case here. She is sweet but she is too timid
And timid people can also be confident and strong in their own way, Madonna is just problematic and lacks humor
the interviewer is not the issue, Madonna is, she is like this with most people who interview her
Whoa, it's the hot German chick from "Love Actually"
Correct, but Heike is a very sweet person and in reality has nothing in common with Mia's character 😊
Madonna is only gnarly because Heike Makatsch is younger, prettier and effortlessly more sexy than Madge could ever hope to be.
+Richard Hart weird and random comment. madonna is 38 in this interview and I think she looks really beautiful and intelligent
Richard Hart pfft LOL..... NO
haha what drug r u on to think that she's prettier and sexier than the queen of pop?? LMAO XD
Hahaha Heike is so boring...
I think it had more to do with wanting Madonna to speak and eloborate a little more than just finish every question with one sentence.
Marcus A good interviewer should know when to stop. After all it’s an interview not an interrogation.
Madonna looks like she´s done 100 hundred interviews that day and is saying herself all the time, "if not for the money they pay me, I wouldn´t be here not for a second" but Madonna is always like that, just like in this interview it´s too evident.
Jelly Bean Benitez owns 1 percent of Ms Madonna....a 1 Percent she still made him fight to get ....His Influence can't be denied? especially when talking about Latin Influence.
a very uncomfortable interview. the interviewer's english, i must say, and her delivery, was misconstrued by madonna as rude and pushy.
