The designer posted that their favourite way to play is just grab monsters at random from the whole pool and then just double check you're got the right amount of acolytes. This makes setup super fast. I'm excited to try the half length game in Forsaken Isles where you battle a Kraken
Great insight Alex, I'm right there with you. I really want to love this game but turns out, I just really "like" it. The setup is the main drawback. Fingers crossed they streamline it with the latest KSer. Doomed run campaign could bring more worth to the initial setup.
The 3rd game will come with a 6 round gameplay, along with a campaign mode. Love the series and I find your review to be accurate, with all the +es and -es, overall is a great game to play.
I've got the first 2 games and I'm waiting for the KS to deliver. I'm also waiting on Skytear Horde so it'll be interesting to see which of them I get to the table more. Paperback Adventures is also a great solo game but boy does it take longer to play than expected!
I have everything so far for SaW, but my friend won't play the game with 4 players. He feels the camp isn't fun, so rotating characters (that way no one is solely camping) is the only way he'll play.
Definitely, a really good solo game. Set-up is easy, although part of the game is choosing your team and abilities - you really overstated its burden. I would say more like a 4/5, possibly 4.5.
I mean, opinions are to each individual for a reason. Even just looking at the comments many agree with my complaints...it doesn't make them right but be mindful of assuming that your opinion is inherently the "correct" one.
I'm glad you mentioned the setup time because that's my biggest problem with this game. It's such a slog to setup. Love the gameplay but the setup just drains all my desire to table it.
I found that just putting all the monsters together instead of separating by type to really speed up setup. Might be a bit more unbalanced but tradeoff is worth it for me . Same for acolytes.
I see why it might not work for others but for me it's still my favorite game of all time. Much content in a small travelsized package.
Same for me!
Is it the only game you’ve played?

I wish that was in the rulebook :)
Love this game. Big inspiration
This is on my Christmas wish list! Looking for more solid solo games to play.
Enjoy it!

Really like it is exactly where I am.

my biggest issue with this game is that it overstays it's welcome. the core puzzle is great but its so repetitive and long
To me it can feel a round or two longer than need be, and I wish there was a shortened setup. 45-60 minutes would be perfect
Yup, I sold it because it feels too long and set up time is too tedious for the gameplay experience.
I'm surprised more designers don't notice this. It seems to be too common a problem.
Agreed completely.
Fun game it is just too long for me for what it is.
Agreed

I can't say that I have found setup to be that bad. But I have Reichbusters and that has taken me 2 hours to set up, more than once?!

Yep, it's not the worst but relative to the playtime not the best either.
