If one had a week before Semana Santa to visit the Algarve region, what city or town would you suggest as good base, or would it be better to split time in two places? I am interested in history, handcrafts, and would enjoy some beach/swimming.

I really want to go to madeira, hopefully next time as they have just started a ferry service from portimao to there last month!
Glad to see you on my country, hope you will enjoy Portugal. Algarve has some beautiful beaches, and is where you can find the best water temperature in Portugal. If you travel along the coast up to Lisbon, you will find some wonderful beaches, but the water is colder. If you have the chance, visit the Arrábida mountain range, near Setubal, and there you will find some wonderful beaches like , Portinho da Arrábida, Figueirinha, Galapos, Galapinhos and Praia dos Coelhos(rabbit beach). Compared to other European countries food in Portugal is much cheaper with a huge variety of fish, seafood and meat.

For me Praia da Rocha is a "velvet" beach of the Algarve lot of quality area. Near P. Rocha beach you should visit Prainha/Três Irmãos beaches which they are almost like Ponta da Piedade kind of landscape. Very nice vlogs, nice work.

For what it's worth. Some places you might like to check out in the algarve: lagos (center, praia de luz, burgau) - sagres area, armona island near olhao, alcoutim (zipline spain to portugal across the river Guadiana that separates both countries), tavira and the beach islands around there. surfing on the west coast, beliche beach and surrounding area etc. (but surfing in the summer months is not great compared to other months during the year). Alentejo will be very hot in the summer but is really nice with vineyards and cork/olive tree fields, a different landscape to Algarve and with cities like beja, evora with chapel of bones (you have a small version of this near you in Alcantarilha). Spain you have Seville (about 2.5 hour drive) which is just really cool city in my opinion but in the summer it will be boiling.. best times to visit would be spring and autumn but still worth going if you have the time. Of course, Portugal itself has loads of things to offer, especially in the center and north the landscapes and micro climates change drastically. Enjoy your stay :)

My city... yes water is cold. 20 degres at this moment because the windy afternoons we are having But it get to the 25 degres during the summer

When i was in Albufeira last year Middle of June the Water was also Ice Cold i think its pretty Normal in Algarve the Ice cold water because i heard it alot from People exccept from my own Experienced. But the Sun is realy Hot over ther so the Ice Vold Swimm is good to Cool off..

My first trip abroad in 1992 to Prai de Rocha , loved it . Have returned numerous times to the Algarve, will be back 4th September for the World Super Bikes.

Portimão is not the most touristy city but it is too noisy in summer. I am from Portimão and in winter nobody wants to come here. go to Lagos or Albufeira, don't park the car where I want to park mine. Aaaaaaa

Nice place Portimão? Eheheh, anedótico! Caos urbanístico, espaços verdes inexistentes, estradas e ruas em mau estado, passeios aonde os peões deviam circular em segurança estão muitas vezes esburacados e com pedras soltas...mas há mais por isso visitem Portimão e descubram por vocês próprios
Nao vi nada de errado com as ruas ou estradas e também com certeza vi nada de caos, lugar bem tranquilo, quase todo vazio

Pease beware of Faro police brutality. My 17 year old son was beat up by the Faro police because they thought he was being verbally insulting after he had asked for help to recover his iphone. THe beat him, dragged hin\m to the ground with their needs and boots on his neck. When he asked what he did wrong while handcuffed in the patrol car, they punched him three times in his face. At the police station they dragged him to the bathroom ( no cameras) and viciously kicked him. One female police officer took particular pleasure kicking my 17 yo son. I reported the incident to the State Department and the US Embassy in Lisbon, as well as Agarve Daily News. Incident took place on 7/28/23. So tourists beware. The Farol police are criminally brutal. Celebrating World Youth Day? while beating up minors by the hands of the Portuguese Police??
