I’m still learning to draw animals as well, most importantly their fur or coat of hair whatever it is, and what I usually do is try to eyeball and colors and get a shade and a tint of the base color/hue. This way I can set up myself to layer the colors to make that illusion of hair or fur. Obviously for some animals there is a variation of colors all over but sometimes that is simply because of the light hitting them or maybe it is an area of shadows. Don’t be fooled by all of that. Just try to continuously add layers and also try to understand the flow of the hair or fur so you don’t put down colors randomly. That's why you keep a ref, to see which way to draw the fur. In this video I just show you the technique to create the fur. The direction of it totally depends on you or your ref.
