    Thanks for making this! I've been scooping soap and using a scuttle but recently was looking at getting a few puck soaps. This was very helpful!

    Mark, your peeling method is a reasonable option, too, and by far not as messy as with a cheese grinder. Peeling a very hard soap might be a chore, though. Nevertheless, I shall try it. At first sight I prefer the heating/melting method on your other video. Thank you for your helpful hints and comprehensible videos. I subscribed.

      Patrick, thank you.:)
      I've found that it really depends on the make up of the soap.
      I've found that Col Conk's Lime soap jsut lends itself better to the melting method. Other soaps do better with peeling. It's a it of trial and error.
      However, I agree, a cheese grater/grinder can be quite messy.

    Thanks, when I put the water in, is it ¼ above the the top of the soap or is it ¼ from the bottom of my mug? Thanks.

    I’ve been looking for an old spice style mug. The mug with the col conk soap , is that mug sold anywhere?

    ok, I have a puck, and a small shaving bowl, which the puck fits into.
    To lather, should I simply wet my brush and start working directly into the bowl, or should I transfer my brush once I get some soap on it to another bowl to whip up more lather?
    Lastly, when I'm done, how do I store the puck in the bowl? Do I just leave it in there like any soap bar? Or do I cover it?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul, if the pucks slips and slides around inside the bowl, then you'll have to secure it. Either by melting or chopping/grating and pressing it into the bowl. Or, simply keep the puck in a separate container, load the bush from the puck and build a lather in the bowl.
      It will be a bit of trial and error. After some time, you'll get the technique down and find which method works best. soon thereafter, you'll be using a variety of methods depending on the soap or cream you use.:)
      For example, this morning, I loaded and lathered directly in my wooden bowl of shave soap, then built the lather on my face (face lathering) using a boar brush.:)
      Tomorrow, I'll probably grab a bowl, throw in a dab of cream, and build a lather from that.:)

      vey good questions...don´t have an answer yet

    • @ozmobozo
      @ozmobozo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First question does not have an answer actually, lathering works different for each man. Do what fits your needs.
      Second question, barbers in Turkey put the bowl upside-down in order to get rid of all the dampness. This way it lasts way longer.

    Hello Mark,
    I am planning to use the same method with those soaps that are expensive when they come with their ceramic tub to make it more affordable.
    Would this method work with Pinaud Clubman, Tabac, and Mitchell's Wool Fat?
    Also the 1/4" hot water to be over the surface of the compacted shredded soap?
    Thanks again

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aluchi, yes, this should work. You'll also find that some of those soaps are fairly malleable and can simply be press-fit into a bowl. Arko shave sticks work this way.

    • @MegaAluchi
      @MegaAluchi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkSzorady also some dumb question after you swirl the wet brush in the Tabac tub for example to form the ather, you just leave the remaining water there and it will solidify for next shave?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MegaAluchi I pour off excess and let it dry. I towel off remaking lather that may have collected on outside of container, etc.

    Great video I wouldn’t have thought of this. Is this good for tallow based soaps though?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Tallow based soaps can be formed and pressed, depending on how malleable they are. For harder soaps, you'd have to cut and shred...some wetshavers even use a cheese grater. Arko is tallow based and is very malleable. It can easily be formed into any mug or bowl. I did that a few weeks ago with a couple of Arko shave sticks.:)
      I did an early video of using a potato peeler with Van der Hagen soap. th-cam.com/video/5BLaJ6qFUuw/w-d-xo.html
      You can do this with Col Conk,. Van der Hage, Arko, etc. But the glycdrin soaps (col Conk) respond well to melting. The others, I've found need to be formed, cut, shredded, etc.

    Where did you get those mugs, especially the second one?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Barbershop mug was one found in my late father's shaving gear. I believe he received it as a gift. It came as part of a kit from the Franklin toiletry Company. Here's the mug on Ebay: tinyurl.com/yav28mwx
      You can also pick up the razor handle: tinyurl.com/mryxmrnh
      Here's the Ebay search page results: tinyurl.com/bdf4d7dn
      Here's my review of the razor handle: th-cam.com/video/jvLPuS7KPXw/w-d-xo.html
      The second mug was one I purchased on Ebay back in 2016. I checked my records and I have it listed simply as "Military Style Shaving Mug." It was $9.95. Sometime after purchasing, I went back up to Ebay to get a second one and could not find it. Unfortunately, it didn't have a brand name of any kind. My Ebay history only goes back to 2020. My purchase history for 2016 is no longer available.
      My apologies. If I come across any additional information that may be of help or, if I discover it for sale again, I'll post here.

      Evan, I looked at the bottom of the mug and found an item number. This led me to do a search on the Web where I found the following link to the mug."Thunder Group AD9016WS San Marino 9 oz. Melamine Soup Mug - 12/Case" www.webstaurantstore.com/thunder-group-ad9016ws-san-marino-9-oz-melamine-soup-mug-case/271AD9016WS.html It looks like this particular website Sells in bulk to restaurants. But, at least it's a start because this is the mug. The Item number is the same with the exception of the letters AD at the beginning. I hope this helps.

    is it not easier to put the puck in a press and make it wider , very simple, if you don't have a press well use then a vice

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, robert broes.:) It depends on the soap, how soft or hard it is, etc.:) Some softer soaps would press in much more easily.:)

    microwave it (maybe 2 min or less ), works with most soaps, wait till it sets back up hard again then use

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. However, when I microwave, I do so in small bursts. 10 to 20 seconds at a time.:) Peeling is a bit more controlled.:)

    Or you could just put a bit of hot water in the mug and let the soap sit for a few minutes and it won't move.
