  • Yes, you CAN get paid to work for a nonprofit - There are just a few catches. #Nonprofit #Nonprofits
    Whether you’re starting a nonprofit and wondering how you’ll make a living, or interested in nonprofits as a job or career opportunity, receiving a salary working for a nonprofit is a mysterious prospect to many.
    I now work full time for the 501c3 nonprofit I started many years ago and love seeing the social impact we make in our community as we grow. But I didn’t just decide one day to make a living and pay myself - I had to work carefully to turn this into a full time job, work with my board of directors to receive compensation, and more. Many people get confused about how someone can “work” for a nonprofit. In this video I’ll talk about how it works and what you’ll need to know to make it happen.

      Our goal is to provide a multiplicity of social services needs for low income families & individuals. These services include child care, mental health, care coordination, housing assistance and other related services. We just started recently. We have 0 funding (just beginning the financial plan) however we been able to provide volunteer services during the pandemic. We been coordinating emergency food package deliveries to people in lockdown and donating face masks to elderly. But it’s all at the cost of my money so far I’m working on changing that now. Your videos are good they keeping me in check and what to expect as being a founder is new to me.

    The blockade to making living in the nonprofit world is the donors impression that doing good work should be all done by volunteers or people who are willing to sacrifice all their own comfort, healthcare, and for the sake of the mission. It is insane how many people have told me I should not make a salary for working full time as the founder and director of my 501c3 rescue shelter in Vietnam. I have close to a $200,000 education and don't make enough to pay my own rent. All my staff work for peanuts and we cannot even provide healthcare though they all have savings and pensions they survive on. It's insane the amount of people who think we have to starve to help animals in spite of the endless trauma we face, the backbreaking labor, and the 24/7 nature of the work.

      I'd like to see the exact style of "house" you claim to live in here in Vietnam. Rent is super cheap and the local labor wage is nothing compared to US. If you live in Vietnam and claim to struggle while pulling a US wage you are in bad need of an audit.

    • @pokuspony
      @pokuspony 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YWloO2il2D42 a US wage? Are you shitting me? For the first 3 years I didn’t get a salary at all and all workers were volunteers. Then when I opened the first nonprofit vet clinic in the history of Vietnam, I decided I deserved $250 a month because my Master’s degree loans ran out and my PhD didn’t pay me. Finally for the past 3 years I’ve made around $500/month if we can afford it, but not ONCE have I ever been able to pay myself in one go. I basically eat when I’m hungry and buy shampoo when I need it. For the first time in our 9 years of operation I’ve been able to move off site to a small place 100 meters from work which I had lived in for 8 years with my staff and volunteers and all the animals. But even there “my” house is just the nursing home for cats with special needs. I never had health insurance until my back started to go in 2019 and my parents donate that to the organization. If you want to be a condescending c*** come and actually see how we live and what we do while I’ve worked my ass off for this mission here for nearly a decade. I’m 43 with no savings because I’ve lived hand to mouth the entire 9 years. And what kind of house I live in is your concern like I’m some expat with a real life?!?!? Grow up.

Keep in mind that a nonprofit is legally 'owned' by the public (not the founder), and a board of directors should be made up of skilled people passionate about your cause - but it's not really within human nature to make people do whatever you want. :) As a founder, aim to recruit board members who will genuinely care about your mission and act in its best interests. If you are a skilled, persuasive founder, the board will follow you because you are a good leader!

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not about percent really, it's about what your Board votes to approve for salaries in your nonprofit's annual budget. The Board should study what fair compensation is for staff it has hired, and then decide what to pay any paid staff. "Members" do not receive salary; only paid staff hired by a vote of the Board or the Executive Director, which the Board has also hired.

      Every board will have a different dynamic but I would say in general, it's about sharing your goal with the board early, developing budget strategy to show how you'll raise the money over time and building in the costs to hire folks, and then demonstrating your competency for the role.

I also have a for-profit business as my only source of income for my family. I'd like to take the non-profit to the next level, but I would either need to make an income as the executive director (so I could focus solely on expanding the nonprofit as my full time job instead of just evenings/weekends after my other job), or hire someone else to be ED. I've invested my heart and soul in this organization, so obviously I would like to be ED, but we are not at the point that we can afford a paid ED. Everyone is a volunteer. Only to beg for a salary and be in fear of myself being fired and my family removed from the board. Before I'm fired I will ve held accountable for any 501c3 violations. Sounds perfect. I totally hear you. It's tough. The IRS structured orgs like this as a trade off for offering a way to operate tax-free. It figured, if we're going to let the org go tax-free, it needs to be accountable to the community, and so board members must be from the community. I get both sides.

    • @abelzoni2138

      Hello! You must have a board of directors legally. The board would have to vote whether to hire you and then what your salary should be. Salaries must be a reasonable amount and considered "not excessive" by the IRS. Nonprofits should definitely pay staff fair, competitive wages, however, one should not start a nonprofit with the specific aim of receiving a big income - if profit is the goal, starting a business would be a safer bet.

      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! No, you can't. To legally get nonprofit status in the USA from the IRS, you are required to have more than one member - you need multiple board members. Check with your state's Secretary of State to see exactly what the minimum board member number required is to run a nonprofit there. Nonprofits are intended to be public-owned entities, with leadership represented by a volunteer board of directors made up by community members. But, if you are interested in starting an entity that you'll have complete control over and can pay yourself whatever you want, you should probably look into starting a for-profit private business instead of a nonprofit.

    So if you start your own non profit...in order to be paid (after first acquiring your board members-who are volunteers and will make all the decisions about your non-profit)....you need to make sure you have a harmonious relationship with them...because they are going to be deciding if they want to hire you and how much they want to pay you? • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there! The truth is, it can be a bit confusing for folks who are especially used to how a normal private business works (in the USA anyway). It's like this: When the IRS gives a nonprofit tax-exempt status, it only grants that status because the IRS expects the nonprofit is going to be a public-serving entity (and thus will not excessively profit the founder or leaders). Nonprofits, by structure, are designed to be led by an elected board of directors that is supposed to represent the community the organization serves. They are not 'owned' by any person, even the founder. So, it is a conflict of interest for the founder to vote to hire themselves, what to pay themselves, etc.

    I went to collect a truck collection from a guy I said what kind of work he do.. He said courier I was shocked what his weekly income was for that week 4 figures £1234 little more than that I was excited.
    As I love driving I actually do not make any profit within my efforts this saddens me but if I get my fuel costs back I feel I have helped someone.
    In return the customer I deliver for gives me feed back on how I performed on said delivery and sometimes this overwhelms me it gives me a purpose in life.
    Not everything is about income.
    My actual costings monthly are somewhere around £250 per month before fuel. But also maintaining the vehicle's I use I had my estate car which I bought outright but repaired as funds was available.
    The van a different story.
    How can I explain to our English credit system that I do an occasional delivery (health permitting) charge a figure that will cover the fuel I use.
    Last year my total cash was £2153.40 my van total cost per year is £2149.68.(not including road tax and insurance) or fuel cost.
    And I believe with restrictions I did 61 hours with deliveries on board my own time driving back.
    I do research all the time I spend upwards of 20 minutes in every couple of hours doing job bids something to keep my active in maths i use map references to as part of my system. In A Proper job environment you could employ 4 people easily.
