At some point since this tutorial was made google maps now *require* you to add a credit card and link it to the project to get the overlay to work. If you don’t do this then you will get just one square load and perpetual blue circles that will never change. On the google account in the metrics you will get one less errors listed that the number of requests. I was not at all happy about this as I don’t trust google in any way shape or form, but if you want the overlay to work then you have no choice at all. Be sure to use a credit card, so any incorrect billing can be charged back.

What is annoying, is that I did see some boxes relating to payment (when I set up the project/API), but clicked on through. The Google Overlay is also good for getting a good regulation of heights with lofts, especially walls. You press to get the yellow elevation arrows and adjust each to where the top of the loft pokes through the overlay and each one will be pretty much the same height above the terrain because the overlay follows the terrain up and down.
+Kirkinstein The Google overlay by default sits about a couple of foot above the ground, well it does on mine, and I find it a perfect height for the top of my walls.

But don't worry, you don't actually pay anything. When you enable billing you will be set up with a free 12 month trail with $300 of credit (more than enough for us users). Even if you do exceed the $300 limit, Google will not charge you without asking for your permission. You do have to enter your credit card details, but in effect it looks like you will never be charged.

I have a pretty big problem and I don't know how to fix it: On my screen all I see is the blue circles. And I was able to work with google maps in Trainsim at some point in time. Matt, I have got an issue, I have done exactly what you have said, then CRTL-G, but all I see is blue loading circles. It just won't go away, and I really want to make the Peterborough - Ipswich route. Any ideas on how to remove it?
Matt, I have watched only two of your tutorials and i'm trying to recreate Matlock and Matlock Bath, however the Google maps overlay will not load what so ever instead just blue circles. I have reduced the settings to 640 x 640 and 3x3 aswell as minimum zoom. What should I do?
Google API updated, as most may know, and it does require a card on file, but, it does not charge anything unless you use over 200 gb of the google map overlay in game in a month, which is about impossible. If you do hit 200 it will not charge your card, instead it will stop loading maps and show blue circles until you allow it to charge your card. If this happens just wait until that month is up, but it would be nearly impossible to use 200 gigs of google maps in a month
GOOGLE MAPS COORDINATES DO NOT MATCH TS19 COORDINATES - if the image you see on the google maps overlay does not match the terrain area that you are expecting, make sure you have entered the Latitude coordinate correctly in TS19. For locations West of Greenwich the number must have minus sign. For locations East of Greenwich, the number has a positive sign.
Hi Matt, nice easy tutorial :). How do you get the area you want to map in the first place? For example I want to map Dundee but obviously I would need to select something in order for it to load up when I press CTRL+G.

Bro there is no easy way. You are talking 2,000 miles of track. Thats insane and will take a LONG time to create without alot of people on the build. Create a section of it and yes you have to place track and such manually lol
Okay How do I create a route without using one of the routes I have. The route I want to do has elements of the USA, UK, and German. I can't get all the elements I need to create the route?

Update from 2021; you need to enter billing info to make this work now. You need to register a credit card to google. They give you $300 worth of free trial for 90 days. It says "You won't be charged unless you manually upgrade to a paid account." but im not sure if that means you then lose access to the maps api or not... I really dont want to chuck my details into google to be honest. Is there another way around this?
I've followed both your tutorials on this. I've managed to get the terrain mapping to work fine, but the Google maps overlay only works for 1 Square, the rest blue circles. The same outcome has happened twice. Do you know the cause?
maybe 2 yers too late, and you may have figured this out by now; you need to register a billing account. ie, enter your credit card details into google.
@@Steggman well it's just getting coordinates of points on google maps and pasting them into Train Sim's coordinates section at the top of the screen. Then place a marker of some sort at where it takes you to. So you can mark out plans of buildings and scenic features. I marked out track by placing points every 50m or so and laying over the top of that. It's a rough way of doing it
It won't let me paste anything in the googlen api space. I want to make some france/germany/switzerland or switzerland/italy and maybe germany/switzerland/austria. So many options with the dlc I have!

Matt, the API isn't working. I think this is due to new policies of Google Cloud Platforms. Google is asking to link a Bank Account in mail & Cloud. Static Maps API is completely free (as said by Google). But on using Static Maps API will give the user a income of 2 USD/ day.
TS2017 new user here: Great tutorials, but they don't work for me. How do you toggle between "build" and "main menu" ? The only way I can get out of "build" or "drive" is to restart the game. Also, when I set my lat/lon, it's OK, but when I select a "ground texture set", the lat / lon reverts to that area, thereby, preventing me from importing the proper DEM data or Google Earth map.

@@augsnow2067 No.....as per my comment above you merely need to activate billing and they give you $300 credit when you do so ther is no need pay anything. Least that is how it was when I did it but may now have changed.
OMG, Markers and decals.. Stitching those bloody decals together, and figuring out offset because your plastering a flat image onto a curved earth.. ARGH!!!

The issue I have is I build from google maps, but when I go into scenario editor and test it with a train the whole route just disappears.

@Leon Perry - you need to enable billing in the Google Dashboard. You get $300 free credit so no payment taken.

So In TS2015 the loading.gif file keeps on rotating.
It will only load like two tiles, and on the rest the blue circles will go on forever. How do I fix this?
