In fact, freeflying puts our body and equipment at various and different relative wind forces than we are used to in belly flying. This is why we need to bring a particular attention to the equipment we are jumping with as not all of them are made to resist those potential forces and avoid a premature opening when you are falling at 150 mph.

That premature deployment was the reserve, not the main
Great video Catherine. I’m not ready for FF but I wondered if other equipment considerations need to be made for FF friendly. I’m looking at one of the smart altimeters and they’re a little thicker, Will this still be ok to eventually use in FF?

How much of a concern is a hacky sack pilot chute handle without any kind of tuck tab for freefly? Seems to me it would be hard for it to catch enough wind to get pulled out, but is that really a possibility?
Dang, One last and I am really out. Buy sn AAD (2 of my friends are still here) including My Wife) . Loss of altitude awareness. The ground is really hard and stuff.
Hi Catherine! I am planning to get my first rig soon and was presented with the option of a spandex BOC or a Cordura BOC. Which material will be better if I wish to proceed with the freefly discipline?

Hey. Both can do the job. What matters is their condition; they need to be damage free & still holding your pilot chute tight. Keep in mind that the spandex pouches will tend to wear faster than the cordura one. Also, depending on the manufacturer, you can get "spandura" which is a combination of the 2. ;)

One more and out…I was part of “the crew” in the USA (50-60 of us) that started freeflying. The faster working speeds are insane. Watch Freefly Clowns Chronicles 2. My Buddies. Hang out with a rigger…at the end of the day, You might need a liver transplant. “God Bless The Freaks”…Stickers planted on every plane we left. Night jumps are Awesome.
i did a night jump on jump #90.dont regret it.interesting but maybe not so great.bit like a sensory deprivation tank.someone flew close to me under canopy out of nowhere,i hope they saw me.i jumped solo because i was falling down the tube but still at a stage where i might drift away from the formation .landing wasnt a problem

check if it needs a longer tuck tab on the main parachute closing flap.i have an old teardrop container and had the tab modified so it was longer and at an oblique angle to go to the side of the closing pin.another possible modification is a double tuck tab in a V formation but they are not so stiff....i havent jumped for 16 years and not current and not a rigger....does the talon have velcro on the riser cover flaps?sometimes old containers would blow open when head down .could be ok if velcro is fresh.not a problem on the poptop teardrop where the riser covers fold the other way
Hi whats up.you said that back flying is a form of free fly.i didnt think it was.in back fly do u fall faster then belly?if so about how much.
Hey Brian. Yes, you fall faster on the back than on the belly. It's actually the base position in Freefly. So when you want to get back to a stable position when you fall off your sit or head down, you need to get on your back in order to keep the fall rate. If you get on your belly you'll fall way slower than the freeflyers and this can cause collisions.
Hi Catherine so in back fly do u have to use a free fly rig just to practice back fly?
Brian Stayton it's preferable but ask an instructor on your dropzone. Anyways you should always ask an experienced jumper to brief you when you want to try a new thing just so you have some tips & tricks and be safe. ;)

So I have a dilemma. I have 29 jumps. I'm about to get my A license but I'm tired of renting the student rigs. My dilemma is whether to continue renting or buy a rig. I will be jumping a different canopy as my skills progress. Would you recommend continuing jumping rental equipment for the next 50 or 100 jumps? Merci

Folks say to wait until you get your B license to get a rig since it’s such a huge investment. By then you’ll know what canopy size you’re looking for since you’re going to downsize later on which will cost a chunk of change.
My 2 cents: I have 65 jumps over the course of 11 years. Things happened, took time off the sport. Glad I didnt buy earlier on (though i was shopping after AFF). Now in a good location and position to be jumping more so I'm about to invest in a custom container (only because there are deals right, and by buying from a major retailer, I can finance the purchase) and then will get some used canopies down the line when container is delivered. Make sure you still enjoy the sport beyond AFF. I.e. rent until at least 50 unless you KNOW you are in it for the long haul @updatedotexe
