    Fun fact: those gray cases also appeared on early French and Australian Master System 2s, until later they switched to the common pal design.

    Wonder why the idea of having a "default game" on the system never caught on, that's actually brilliant, and it'd probably be more marketable than having the familiar situation of buying a console and not having any games for it.

      Some Famiclones have this feature.

      But probably will make those units more expensive,hence the extra memory you need to store a game on them.

    Cleaned up my Sega Master System model 1 using this method. Loads of dust inside, the circuit board is nice and clean. Case looks like new! Thanks!

    I dont know if anyone has commented already but the plastic door can be removed by flipping it around to the inside and it will come out easy. Thanks for the video!

    I'd never seen a master system 2 in real life either until I got mine. I had an ad on craigslist saying I'd buy any sega games or consoles, and I had a guy get in contact with me who had a genesis, saturn, and master system he'd like to sell. I got them for cheap since I was prettymuch broke at the time (I'd forgot I had the ad posted) and he needed money that day and was pretty surprised it was a master system 2 when I met him, since I have 3 original versions and see those from time to time. Got a console (original) and a big stack of games (20 or so) including the original phantasy star CIB about a week later just browsing through craigslist, too for about what you can buy just the console from a game store around here, too.

    Just fixed one of these with the gray shell, got it for $40 and was just showing a black screen. I pinpointed the issue to a bad crystal oscillator and now it works fine.
    It's in really good cosmetic condition too so I'm happy to have it in my collection

    With cleaning the games I find dismantling them first allow better access to the contacts - I then use a soft eraser to rub off the physical grime, then use a soft tooth brush to remove any eraser crumbs, and compressed air, then the cue tip with either windex or rubbing alcohol! Takes longer than your method, but at least you can see how clean the contacts now are not missing any bits!

    The Master System II was my first video console (the version with Sonic built-in), and I still have it working ! It was kind of a hot seller in France, and I can still quite easily find games for it at the flea market. While the NES has got a "cult" status and now prices of games, accessories,...are skyrocketing, the Master System has kind of got under the radar and is still affordable !

    Another awesome use for pledge is to polish up scratched old game disks. The glossy finish it leaves has saved many soul calibur game nights for me personally.

    You can wash boards in water believe it or not. As long as it's absolutely dry before plugging it in it will be fine.
    I've done a few.

    I remember getting one of these for Christmas one year. Neither my dad nor I notice it said game is "BUILT IN"...we thought it was supposed to be a cartridge....(I was like 8 years old and my dad don't know jack about video games)...so we ended up going to the store to buy a game for me. After a few weeks of playing it, I put the cartridge in and it booted up "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". Apparently, the contacts on the cartridge I put in were dirty and it didn't see the game. So I took the cartridge out and turned the system on without a cartridge....thats how I found out the game was actually built-in.......you'd think we would have read the manual or something, but oh well, i got another game out of it LOL

    Nice tip with the Pledge. I've never thought of shining up old consoles with that, though I do use 'Endust For Electronics' to maintain already nice looking consoles (it doesn't leave a coating, just cleans).
    Also, I didn't know those magic erasers were micro-abrasives, I thought they were just super-amazing absorbent! :D

    I once had a original sega master system back in '88 and the built in games were hang on and safari hunt (it came with 2 controllers and a light phaser). The games i used to have were ghostbusters, aztec adventure, kenseiden, rocky, fantasy zone: the maze and space harrier.

  • @CreativeMindEnt
    @CreativeMindEnt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Master System 1 also had a maze game hidden in there. My childhood friend had it and we played that game for hours at a time trying to beat the game. It got pretty hard for 8 year olds, lol.

    The PAL consoles came in both black and grey, i have two grey PAL ones here, and i think theyre New Zealand models. The French model had RGB out instead of the RF, but as you know they are all easily modded for that.

    Just an FYI
    The 2 fine screws on the LH side you removed for the voltage regulator is connected to the heat disapator, in-between is thermal paste, if you remove the screw just above the black square you will need to clean and replace the thermal paste as you would have not a great connection between the voltage regulator and heat dissipator due to the paste being 20+!years old.
    I know this video is old hopefully you replaced the thermal paste to keep the regulator being able to keep cool.

    ah the good old days of blowing on the cartridge slots to make the games work. didn't need to do on the SMS much always had to do it on the NES (famicom). ive got the power base converter its like a master system that plugs into your megadrive and lets you play SMS games good fun. alex kidd in miracle world is very rare I paid a lot for that

    Arghhhhh - Magic Eraser again! Each to their own but it does leave scratches in the surface of the plastic!!! Look at it in the light afterwards and you will see the scratches. Meguiars PlastX is what you need, its a lot less abrasive and doesn't scratch the plastic. Great job other than that - always nice to see a system restored :)

    • @AdamKoralik

      I know, but it's the lesser of two evils. Plus, Pledge offsets a lot of that.

    • @NotMoreGames
      @NotMoreGames 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pledge is ok but, a little bit of WD40 sprayed onto a micro fibre does a great job of giving a darkened sheen!

    • @AtariBorn
      @AtariBorn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that magic eraser kills your textured finish on consoles. I would also just go with isopropyl alcohol instead of window cleaner. Windex uses ammonia as a drying agent but there's also detergent that can leave a film on your connectors. A quick clean but not as sterile as alcohol.

  • @cybernitemusic
    @cybernitemusic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried the credit card method on my NES and it sort of snagged one of the metal contacts. As I pulled outwards, the contact bent out of shape almost backwards. I bent it back in shape, but I've actually done this a couple of times... so just wanted to add a slight warning to using that method... and think I'll google that cartridge cleaner you used there. That looks pretty great.... thanks for the vid.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn man, that sucks! I'm sorry about that. Yeah, I'd always recommend the cartridge cleaning kit, I wish some company would make a "retro series" of them so they'd become easier to get now.

    I didn't realise the model 2 SMS over here were that dull charcoal colour with the light grey button. Much prefer the all black version from back home. That said its region free so I don't see why it would matter ha ha. Would love to pick myself up one of these again.
    Choplifter is a lot of fun, played a heap as a kid.

    You should buy the brazilian Master System II. Here they kept the first design of the Master System which is beautiful (well, at least I prefer Master and Mega Drive (genesis) first designs).
    This bring back good memories, all the afternoons that I spent playing Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, Shinobi, California Games and others.
    TecToy (SEGA's partner in Brazil) did an excellent job of marketing here for this console.

    They've had one of these at the local game shop where I live for months, but they want like $100 for it. I had a chance to get a regular Master System for $50 but it sold before I could make up my mind about it. The US Model 2 is quite an interesting piece, but I am not quite a hardcore enough collector to buy it when the Model 1 is half the price and has a better list of features.

    I rebought a mastersystem 2 just recently because of it’s sleeker design,HOWEVER im am not that retisfied with it because theres a huge scratch on the back also parts of the griphandle from the door is missing and that rf signal really looks grainy( even the rf signal from my snes looks soo much better,heck theres even no channel select,am mean what a letdown,isn’t be enough that the mastersystem 2 lacks a cart port,no expansion port,no reset button,no rgb out🤨
    But that cleaning kit you showed is definitely handy for me.

Because I found one in facebook market in my city and only pay $200mx (10.20ddls) and never imagine it was an uncommon console, i'm impressed. I have been looking for tutorials on the internet to mod av connections, but I can not find any information, do you know if it is possible to make this mod in a NTSC console? AdamKoralik It's really odd that the console has a pause button on it, rather than a reset button. Did that mean that you had to go all the way to the console to pause the game?

    Adam, not sure if you knew but you are supposed to wet the magic eraser before using it :)

    • @Friskybusiness1
      @Friskybusiness1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plastic was already wet so what does it matter

    • @TheTrustyPickaxeSMP
      @TheTrustyPickaxeSMP 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What it matters is that, if you wet the magic eraser it acts as a sponge, and then does not leave a residue or scratches like it did in the video. Just was trying to be helpful.

      It still works just as good for removing scrapes and stuff though.

      Rodolfo Pierre Make sure to use anti-static brushes for older systems. Toothbrushes have a higher chance of messing them up, so better safe than sorry, right?

    I would love to get an import Master System 2, and replace its insides with a modded Game Gear board allowing at least s-video out. Then with a Game Gear everdrive cartridge, I can have the entire Master System and Game Gear library able to play on my television.

    Not sure you should paper towels. The cellulose fibers cause micro scratches.

    The main trouble with the Sega Master System is that eventually the D-Pad on the controller breaks and falls out. You can just buy a high quality 3D printed sega master system replacement D-Pad for £2.75 off riscman on eBay!! Works better than the original!! Sega Master system Game Pad problem solved!!
