Good catch, Korbin. Sholay is indeed written by Salman Khan's father, Salim Khan in association with Javed Akhtar, Zoya and Farhan Aktar's father. Before their fallout in 1982, Salim-Javed gave many successful film scripts to Hindi cinema.

I have been recommending this movie since ages. But I also said that you should watch it with some Indian who knows the jokes. Because this movie is like the ultimate test of your induction into the Hindi film industry. I feel you are watching it a bit early. This movie released soon after "Hum Aapke Hain Koun!", the biggest movie of that year and decade (I rate it bigger than DDLJ), so it didn't do so well when it was released. But later it has become a cult film. The film was in the making for a few years and there were many fights, cold-wars, and one-upmanship among the co-stars (Aamir vs Salman and Karishma vs Raveena). This movie has several types of humour. A big part of it is to do with references to old Hindi films, film personalities and a spoof of the kind of movies which were common in those years. Then there are over-the-top caricatures like comedy, puns, word-play, situation comedy, recurring recall to some lines from this film or old films and so on. Even the music is very unique because it's a tribute to old film music of 60's. Without all that understanding you'll not appreciate this movie. Here are a few things you would not have noticed, understood. -- Amar and Prem - The names of lead actors are taken from Rajesh Khanna's super-hit movie "Amar Prem". Their names are so "filmy" and used excellently in the monologue by Paresh Rawal when the two go to meet him and are late. -- Veteran comedian Mehmood mentions Wah Wah Production. That's a reference to the 1966 comedy (starring Kishore Kumar and Mehmood himself) "Pyar Kiye Ja" in which Mehmood was working on his movie production house called "Wah Wah Productions". He plays the same thing after 28 years! -- Salman's father, Jagdeep is a veteran comedian who you saw in Sholay ("Soorma Bhopali"). He repeats the same style of talking here. -- Aamir's father in the movie Deven Varma is a veteran comedian. You should watch his movie Angoor, which was Gulzar's adaptation of "Comedy of errors" -- In the movie Aamir jokes to Salman that "Sholay was written by your father"...which is actually true. Salim-Javed wrote the film. (Salim Khan who is Salman's father and Javed Akhtar) - - Bhalla in the movie is the son of old villain Ajit (who you saw in Zanjeer). He had a peculiar style of talking. Here his son mimics that style. So it's hilarious! -- Ajit's characters in old movies always used to have a side-kick called or like Robert and he would pronounce it as "Raabert). So Bhalla copies that style -- In old movies there used to be dumb side-kicks of villains. So Bhalla and Robert characters remind of those movies. It's a spoof. -- The actor in the early scene in Police Station is Tiku Talsania, another comedian known for his peculiar style and dialogue delivery. The song played in the background is from Aamir's first movie as a lead actor i.e. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak -- Cameos of Govinda and Juhi were hilarious and had their own references and back stories. -- Juhi and Sunny Deol (pair from Darr) were supposed to play those parts (that explains the reference to Darr). Sunny couldn't come for the shoot. Govinda was shooting in the same studio nearby. So he did that scene. You can see the comic genius of Govinda even in that small scene and without much preparation. -- Paresh Rawal's double role names are Ram and Shyam. That was the title of a classic Dilip Kumar comedy called "Ram aur Shyam". Surname Bajaj is after the family name of a famous business group in India. They are the biggest two-wheeler makers in the world and their tag-line in those days used to be "Humara Bajaj" (i.e. our own Bajaj). Paresh Rawal's character hums that line from an ad in a scene. -- The last fight scene is a parody of mindless Bollywwod action sequences in 70's and 80's. The "contactless" fight between Salman and Shakti Kapoor (Crime Master Gogo...he is father of Shraddha Kapoor and was a very popular villain in 80's) -- Music of the film is a tribute to 50's and 60's songs from OP Nayyar. Especially Elo Ji Sanam is a direct rip-off where OP used to use horse tapping as a rhythm. Aamir tries to mimic 50's superstar Dev Anand's style in a few scenes. There are many more such inside jokes, references or tributes. You should listen to an interview with director Raj Kumar Santoshi on the 25th anniversary of this movie in 2019. He has told many interesting stories about this movie. Here is that interview: th-cam.com/video/jwwFD8WC6X0/w-d-xo.html
Comedian Jagdeep who played role of Salman Khan's father, is father of Javed Jaffrey.
