What an amazing interview. Ian is so refreshingly, humble, down to earth, honest and candid. He speaks intelligently with wisdom. Great album too, one of The Cult's defining albums.
Back in '94 The Cult was in Atlanta and me and some friends went to go see them that night at The Roxy and across the street was a pub called Good Ole Days. We drank beers there and saw the band bus show up and next thing I know I see someone at teh next table looking like Ian Astbury. It turns out it was him and their tour manager so we bought them a pitcher of beer and then he came and sat & talked with us for about 30-45 minutes or so and he was cool as hell.
I love how this man carries himself. He has such a keen well spoken insight & awareness. A humble Rockstar ! I have no idea why peeps debate the albums. Love & Electric were brilliant... I saw the Cult open up for Billy Idol circa...ummm late 80's. :)
One of the best interviews I have seen in awhile. Ian is a powerful man. He has the ability to speak his mind and be sincere, yet not lose his edge. His whole painful youth still affects him and that is a very relatable theme, at least to me. The spirit he has really comes through here when you see him speak about what is on his mind. I appreciate the interviewer for letting him speak. I love what he says about feminine sensuality in music. He is exactly right. Ying and Yang. Peace!
I find it sad that Ian and Billy diss their earlier albums Love and Dreamtime. Both were excellent productions for the period. I will always listen to both of these albums. Ceremony also. They also stood out as very different from what I heard before. I can still listen to each over and over again and not get bored! Ian's voice is unique, my solace. Transcending me to another level. Always a comfort ❤❤
Ian is a rather rare genuine, non pretentious, candid, honest, ,erudite leading man. Such an underrated lead singer. A huge talent and a perfect pairing along with Billy Duffy. Love The Cult. And still a hot guy.
I love how the quiet, outsider kid ends up having an incredible voice. "The blues and sensuality in music is important" It's so funny that Rick Rubin worked with the Beastie Boys, the Cult, and the Red hot chili peppers. such diverse bands. I was listening to the cults Love album while listening, to the doors, the Beatles white album, Zeppelin, Metallica, and then grunge hit hard and all the cult music, AC/DC, Metallica prepared us for hearing Chris Cornell's voice and Soundgarden's "Break my rusty cage" yes. women are finding their power. "Game of Thrones" the next vice president (finally) But Ian is still one of my idols who is fearless on stage and sings his heart out. Red paint on the face .war. "ritual space" transcendence. Ian speaks very eloquently, and the part about us needing to ask for the first nations people elders help is right on. We should have done that more than 100 years ago. ATWA. Namaste. Jai Kali Maa!
Yay good interview, great to see so many of his influences are what I've been listening to also. He mentioned Mick Ronson which was great, never gets enough credit.
Well said veronaga. Haven't seen many interviews with Ian or any other Rockers from that era. I keep going back and listening to "She Sells Sanctuary". So powerful..which led me to this interview. I just want to know more about Ian. And, I'm very impressed with Ian's intelligence and intuition. So right on about it all....Love you, Ian....Brilliant!
SSS I never get tired of that song! I'm 47)))) And I have always had a deep admiration and respect for Ian and The Cult. Aaaaaahhh great great music they have made! I have totally enjoyed it! Salute...now I must push "Play"
as much as i love the cult, i'm still a huge fan of southern death cult and death cult. fond memories growing up... great too see ian lookin well and sounding better than ever!
theres nothing wrong wth this interview. its very good. he responds with colorful imagery in much the same way music intends to suggest a certain imagery. a tone. and a career musician tends to their craft seriously. good. they should.
One of the best front men/vocalist in rock music period. From 85-89 I didn’t play anyone more than I played the Cult. Ian and Billy still sounds amazing.
Life is a journey, not a product. None of us are here to cater to the whims of the populous. Sometimes we do some great things, sometimes we fall, and maybe some great things later. But there's always change and a transition. Respect the journey and see what's next.
How difficult is it to install microphones for the interviewer and the guest? Or at least one in the middle? I'm listening to this on professional headphones with full volume and I can barely make out the words spoken.
Gore, Envy is a bad thing...bad, bad! Ian could read the phone book and have my respect. He has damn sure earned at least that much after all these years. May the god`s hold him close..Rock on Ian...xxoo
the interviewer is not aligned at all with ian, not feeding onto his narrative, he had so many openings for her to explore much more interesting things but she goes for the basics and isnt attuned, like she is not really aware who she is sitting with. but he is just super cool, present, open, interesting, alive. beautiful.
I now know why I have always loved Ian Astbury and the Cult (besides the music)...I also use to take apart watches, without a clue of how to put them back together. Now I know how to put them back together:)
Every Rock star gets that "spread" .....except Mick Jagger and his crew. I think they go through a dehydration machine before they come out on stage.....lol ,,,,but I still love 'em, wrinkles and all.
"Space in music"? "Air in music"? "Had taken the band apart and had trouble putting it back together again"?"We don't want to be a label"? "Some of the wounds that went into these songs are just healing"? "Ran around with indigenous kids"? What the heck is he talking about? "Feminine element in music"? Does he mean romance in music"? Is there a musician that can just speak plainly without all the pretension?
he really says some spot on things about what's missing in alot of modern music. not that everythng sucks now, but there's less now. alot of hollow 2 dimensional music
There are quite a few bands from the 80's and 90's that are still rockin' today such as Def Leppard, AC/DC, Crue might still be rocking, Van Halen are still trying to rock but they're having difficulties with choosing a full time vocalist, Velvet revolver is alright. The new age "Rock" today is more.... pop than rock its mostly about young boys with fruity vocals and melodies trying to attract girls. That isnt rock that's crap. Rock is "Welcome to the jungle" from GNR its "Night Prowler" from AC/DC that is rock.
mark...go see them they never sounded better and with this lineup..sorry but we all age.. good luck with that don't be so hard on yourself or other about it.
This band shouldn't have gone into heavy rock. Bands with sophisticated sound like The Cult, Killing Joke etc should have gone into prog rock. Even SDC debut was very close to prog rock.
Ian is a Legend, & still looking hot!! 1st saw him @ his concert back in Calgary back in the day & hope he comes Vancity *Vancouver* 4 another 1 because I will definitely be there!!! Firewoman was always my Fav song & one most of my frens back home called me *lol* Love that indigenous ppl had an impact with Ian, especially the 6 nations!! One of the reasons why my friends & I became Cult fans. Being Indigenous, yes our ppl know all about that ostracising feeling all 2 well but its one obstacle 2 overcome rite ;-)

Saw the same Bill idol/Cult tour at Great Woods in Massachusetts. They crushed it!!

Love Ian still today

Love. Love. Love. Ian Astbury
Ian is a rather rare genuine, non pretentious, candid, honest, ,erudite leading man. Such an underrated lead singer. A huge talent and a perfect pairing along with Billy Duffy. Love The Cult. And still a hot guy.
What a great interview. Really nice to hear Ian speak so relaxed and sincere. The new album is some of their best work to date.
Love Ian Astbury
I saw them perform at The Phoenix in Toronto touring "Choice of Weapon." Fantastic album and incredible concert!
This interview was great tbh and the questions were good also especially the one about if the harder times produce the better music.. nice one
So inspiring my favourite artist is Hockney too, admire Ian with the Doors also his early material too do hope he tours again in the Uk thAnk you x
Whant to be there love to here Ian talk of music and different bands Ian seems so sensitive and deep Ian is my dream man ❤️
Amazing man, so powerful. Can't wait to see him in Split, July 3th 2012. I love Ian and his music whole my life

Great interview, interesting to hear what he thinks about modern rock!

The sound was recorded on a potato, though.
@@j_freed yes...I am finding hard to hear Ian. He is very soft spoken.
One of the best front men/vocalist in rock music period. From 85-89 I didn’t play anyone more than I played the Cult. Ian and Billy still sounds amazing.
Ian, you're a great guy!! Love you!!
I hope it was awesome, I have to wait till August 22...cheers.
This is a really good interview and IA comes across really well in it.
Great Band
Love
Weapon is a brilliant album, I wish the engineer had lent a microphone to put on Ian for this...
IAN you rock!
No entiendo nada pero me encanta este hombre❤
saw them last night at the Tower Theater in Los Angeles my ears are still ringing they are great high energy band
A great honest down to earth interview .
Electric is an amazing album.
Best AC/DC record yet. I mean that as a compliment. Amazing record. Just astounding.
Sonic Temple too.
subtle and aware, inspiring

Cool man, nicely expressed! Word up bro:-).
Sinsation27 nice thought

How difficult is it to install microphones for the interviewer and the guest? Or at least one in the middle? I'm listening to this on professional headphones with full volume and I can barely make out the words spoken.
Ian is quite soft spoken anyways. But I agree the absence of microphones aren't helping.
I am still Fascinated with the Earliest Records and the evolution that became The Cult.
Wow!!
Your cool Ian
Jeff Smith yes Ian is cool I love him 🎤💕
Gore, Envy is a bad thing...bad, bad! Ian could read the phone book and have my respect. He has damn sure earned at least that much after all these years. May the god`s hold him close..Rock on Ian...xxoo
I was watching the video.Ian, i hope you're doing fine, and i hope to see you in holland the next years!
WILD. RED PAINT...LOVE HIM SO MUCH

Amen!

,,,,but I still love 'em, wrinkles and all.
Great man, Great Artist, Brilliant Band...and of course the incredible Billy Duffy.
Respect.
😍
Ian, You are a fuckin Legend!!
Why would you ask a question about rock radio? Does that still exist?
Where can I find his latest work?
Ian, Bono says can he have his glasses back now please? Cheers.
& his pretension
Don't you hate it when the interviewer is miked up more than the interviewee ?
9:16 Says it all about the current state of Rock.
Most of you won't get it..but soon ;)
When the hell did Ian Astbury get old? :P
He still looks GOOD
so this is not val kilmer?
saw him Tuesday....he ain't fat now.
ozjuice duh
I just remember what a crushing disappointment Electric was after Love. We all blamed Rick Rubin at the time, it seems we were right.
Why would Electric be a let down? It's a band totally rocking out it the purest form and not repeating the same thing again.
"Space in music"? "Air in music"? "Had taken the band apart and had trouble putting it back together again"?"We don't want to be a label"? Chris Goss ie. Masters Of Reality ie. Ginger Baker ie. genius...fuck !
Oooh ello Mrs Smoker, what you been shopping then? What d'you buy? I hope it was a bargain! Love Always Beatlewayne..
he really says some spot on things about what's missing in alot of modern music. not that everythng sucks now, but there's less now. alot of hollow 2 dimensional music
Next time, telll them about your first girlfriend when you were 8.

Ricky Gervais has really let himself go
I thought it was Bono
mark...go see them they never sounded better and with this lineup..sorry but we all age.. good luck with that don't be so hard on yourself or other about it.
You gotta bleed a little while you sing, Lest the words don't mean no-thing. IA
This band shouldn't have gone into heavy rock. Bands with sophisticated sound like The Cult, Killing Joke etc should have gone into prog rock. Even SDC debut was very close to prog rock.
he has got his Game of Thrones on - now - not 50 and whisky
Burrito
He's so dismissive of Love it seems and I think Love is art while Electric is goofy excess.
your nuts, Electric was a good album
Terrible audio. What a waste of good content. The democratisation of information gives us this
utterly unrecognisable
Until he smiles, then you see the 80's Astbury...
Please do interviews in a better sounding rooms, this is annoying to listen to.
Disapointed Ian, IdNW2S
