Keep in contact with Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California where I teach. It is hard to teach a beginner workshop by zoom but we plan to have a video or zoom class in the future. It's a work in progress. Google their website.
Happy to know my video is of comfort to you. This site also has a short interview of 1 of my small window exhibit. If you youtube sf asian museum japan day you will see this lady dress in a yellow kimono. Half way through the video is an exhibit of my dolls with me narrating it. Please find and enjoy
I love these dolls and will try to make one! It would be useful to have the measurements of both the head and the kimono. It's possible? Thanks for these videos and congratulations!
TH-cam cupertino cherry blossom festival 2016 to see my exhibit there. Or sf Asian museum japan day you will see a woman dress in yellow kimono. Half way through the video is an exhibit of my dolls with me narrating it.
Can you pls recommend a site online where I can buy large sheets of paper for these dolls? I'm having a hard time finding some good quality and large enough for an outfit.
I doubt you'll ever see this but is the thinner paper for the skin called something other than washi paper? The hair and clothing paper seems to have a different texture, less thin. How would you word it to order the thin white skin paper?
So glad you enjoyed this video. She is very popular! You can contact the "Japanese Cultural and Community Center of No. California by email and request the information from Rochelle Lum who is an instructor at the center. Or if you live in SF you can take classes from her!
You can use a pencil and 2 spools of thread. The pencil should be able to go through the hole on top of the spool. If there are other slots on tip, cover them with a flat piece of cardboard. You only want to use the center holes.
Please contact Rochelle Lum “washi ningyo”@Japanese Cultural Community Center of N. CA. 94115. Send an email or postal service to ask your questions. Thank you for watching!
It's a kind of mulberry paper from Japan. But you can try using square coffee filter that is thin or tissue paper but becareful it can tear easily because it does not have long or strong fibers.
You can use a pencil and 2 spools of thread, making sure pencil can go through center of spool. The hair tool I use no longer is made. Measurements are in cm, use tweezer, scissor and Elmar white glue not school glue. Japanese Paper or paper with long fiber. Not origami paper. For face you can use square coffee filter or if careful white wrapping tissue paper.
I had a time limit of about 15 mins to show entire process. It usually takes a beginner 3 to 4 hrs to make doll. Please contact Jcccnc if you are interested in zoom class. Beginner classes won't be until next year. 2023
I wish I could take a class! I live on the side of the globe! I adore Washi Ningyo! I have been making 'flat" ningyo using regular origami papers.

Is the kimono paper same just washi paper or is it a different type of paper material
Same as washi paper. But you can use any paper to make kimono.
Trial by error when using other non Japanese washi paper.
I doubt you'll ever see this but is the thinner paper for the skin called something other than washi paper? The hair and clothing paper seems to have a different texture, less thin. How would you word it to order the thin white skin paper?
The face paper used is call shiraume . Hair paper is from black kozo, mulberry plant fiber. Washi means traditional Japanese paper
Thank u Mam.
Thank u very much
