The implications for outdoor strobe work is insane. I remember a time in the late 90's to early 00's when the look in fashion was a heavy strobe overriding daylight by about 2+ stops. The way we achieved it was shooting RZ's (leaf shutter) with a 6400w generator powering 2x 2400ws Profoto packs to a bi-tube head in an octabank. The fact you can do this with a battery powered 400ws strobe is surreal ! Yes truly a game changer (and I don't throw that term around lightly). I'm pretty sure CanNikkon engineers are working on this right now.

As a big fat cam fan. Getting global shutter into this man’s hands with his handheld cowboy style makes for INSANE footage. Most people probably can’t tell the difference. But for this style it seriously takes it to 11/10 for me.

You actually DO loose power with the A9 too. Starting at about 1/4000 depending on the flash and the power setting of the flash. Which makes sense, as the flash duration becomes longer than the shutter speed. That is easy to verify and I have made a video demonstrating it.

    • @cammackey

Thank you for inspiring me through your TH-cam channel focused on colors. As someone who believes that well-executed color grading can significantly elevate a video's quality alongside strong composition, storyline, and audio. I spend additional time and attention towards color grading to ensure that clients receive a final product that leaves them amazed. Being an owner of Sony's FX3 camera, I can't wait for the upcoming shutter angle firmware update in September. Although I currently don't require a global shutter feature, I would like to see an improved display for the FX3 Mark II model. In fact, I would even be willing to pay extra to upgrade and interchange the same screen from my FX30 model. Using the camera without an external monitor or when it's mounted on a gimbal often results in eye strain and discomfort for me. If you are visiting Chicago in the future and need someone for a B-cam, please let me know, I would love to help you out and gain some experience at the same time.

Where Sony is at right now is that even if you cannot cover all your needs with one camera, you can probably get another body that covers what you are missing. Personally, I have a foot in 2 camps for video with Sony and Panasonic equipment. I prefer to cover what I can with Panasonic, but if I need to, I can cover with Sony, though I might need to go to rentals at the extreme case.

The limit all of sudden is flash duration. It's game changing but 1/1000 is still faster than most strobes can manage on high power, until they catch up. So more power than HSS isn't a reality at higher shutter speeds. The Sony sensor having a higher base ISO is going to push us into these shutter speeds more often.

Me personally though… I don’t think the dynamic range trade off is worth it. I would be using a ND anyways for video, so why not just use it for photo too, or less speed is needed.
Only downfall would be power and battery for HSS mode or the shutter speed not being fast enough when full power is needed on the flash.
I would be more impressed with internal ND on these small bodies. Canon seems to have a patent filed on this. See what happens I guess. 🤷‍♂️

I’m not sure on that one 100%. I think that’s more of a shutter sync issues with the frequency of the lights

Isn't that working as the electrical shutter on a7iv?

If you want a bunch of warped images, yes I believe so. Electronic shutter read from top to bottom.. it’s not global. It’s merely just voiding the shutter. GLOBAL SHUTTER takes a picture all at once.

    How is the low light?

Was dusk flu going into night for some of those shots.. obviously you can’t tell because the camera held up.
That would be my definition of low light. Unless you mean like shooting on a cloudy night with zero moonlight,. Which personally I would never do.
