2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 Long Term Review: The Watercraft Journal EP. 46

  • We were super excited to get our hands on one of the very first ST3-based 2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 machines and we were not disappointed. This video is a bit of a "year in review" of sorts, as well as our final thoughts on the top tier of Sea-Doo's Performance lineup. As noted, the ST3 platform was entirely new for 2018 and featured a shorter overall length, a lower ride height (giving the craft a far more low-slung center of gravity) as well as a dramatically lower overall weight (cutting nearly 90 pounds off from the previous year). Powered by the brand's larger and more powerful 1630cc supercharged 300 ACE engine, the RXT-X 300 will put a smile on your face either by volition or by G-force! We even dabbled in modifying our RXT-X somewhat with reversable modifications - namely RIVA Racing's Pro Series sponsons and Speed Control Override Module - to push this 3-seater harder in the twisties and up to an impressive 75mph with 3/4 full tank of fuel - all without touching the factory ECU tune!

    A nice thorough review of the RXTX. Riva sponsons are next on my list.

      Junior Jr thank you! They radically transform the otherwise “peculiar” tracking of the ST3 hull.

    Your review nails hull characteristics perfectly! In choppy conditions upto around 300mm chop, trim the nose right up, adjust your throttle and you have a comfortable, dry ride. Yes, the keel does tend to dart around sometimes, but it keeps things interesting. I'm loving the ski. It handles all the missions i throw at it! :)

      LOL! "Keeps things interesting" is the BEST understatement yet! Great comment!

      Ha! Good eye. Pay attention to the "Slippery" logos on the back of our vests. The video was horizontally flipped - I'm waving with my left hand in reality.

    If you don’t mind me asking, what camera are you recording with on your Rxtx and are you using a suction mount? Does it really stay put with all that horsepower? Thanks

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use mainly GoPros (Hero7 Black, a couple of GoPro Sessions). We almost always use suction cup and sprung C-clip mounts. On rough or super-fast modded PWC, we will also use some reusable zip ties to make sure we don't lose anything.

    Awesome review. Question: Does this apply to the 2022 RXT-X on Riva pro sponsons. I guess the question is is everything still the same on the 22s? Im looking for a supercharged ski on these Arkansas impounded lakes with main lake 1-2 ft chop but the ability to go into the multitude of pockets and coves and carve the glass shoreline. Sometimes 1 sometime 2 or even 2 + a kid riding. Debating the RXT-X 22 or one of the 22 FX SVHO models. Thanks so much

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The 2022 ST3 models are unchanged (apart from the dashboard upgrade).

    Love your videos! Looking at getting a new RXT-X 300 at some point. Pardon the question as I’m fairly new to the PWC Market but around when do the new model years become available for purchase usually?

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      New models are usually released around mid-to-late September. We'll have video, pictures and full write ups at www.watercraftjournal.com

    Can’t decide between rxtx and rxpx 🤷‍♂️

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends entirely on how you plan to use either machine. The RXP-X has a hull designed specifically for ONE purpose, racing around buoys. Sharp, hairpin turns. It actually hates long, wide swooping turns, and will buck and bow hunt when trying to execute such a turn.
      Unfortunately, the new ST3-hull is heavily inspired by the RXP-X's T3 hull in this regard, which we view as a bad choice. The knife-like blade tends to bow steer in heavy chop and wash, giving the large 3-seater an uneasy feel. This can be fixed with some aftermarket sponsons and trimming up.
      If you're unsure if the RXP-X 300 is the right fit for you, the answer is NO it is not a good fit for you. It has one intended use, and that's it.

      marshpaint89 look at it like this. The RXP is the sports model and the RXTX is not. Two seater vs 3 seater

    Split between this or 2019 Yamaha FXSVHO ?

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mixalis it really depends on your riding style and intended riding locations. The FX is best in rougher water.

      mixalis go with Yamaha they are way more reliable and easier to work on than seadoo I picked up a blue FXSVHO and I love it I have driven seadoo’s and I do not like the way they feel you will love Yamaha’s FX

    How’s it for carving it up? Short turning hitting waves?

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely the worst. The ST3 hull is not for that kind of play whatsoever.

    Reliability and recommended service intervals ? How long should I expect it to last as far as hours go if maintained great?

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  ปีที่แล้ว

      Adhere strictly to the owner's manual, which details hours vs. months (season). We also suggest an extra oil change after the initial break-in. There's a couple of videos on this topic on our channel.

    I used to have a fx cruiser going to pull the trigger on a waverunner in next couple of weeks looking at 2018 rxtx but has 80 hours on it , seems like a lot what do you think? Love the videos

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on the kind of hours. Cruising is one thing. Hot rodding at speed is another. You need to pay close attention to the amount of carbon dust in the hull, the wear ring, prop and hull condition for sure.

    • @kevinpapocchia6728
      @kevinpapocchia6728 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks glad you mentioned the carbon dust! Otherwise ski looks mint and where I will be riding water is pretty choppy and I was thinking the rxtx would be good and I also have kids so that’s why I was thinking of the seadoo

    I have my doubts that you will ever get a real comparison here. I have watched all the videos and it’s easy to tell they are seadoo bias. As a business I don’t blame them because seadoo threat them right. But would be nice to have a real bias test between all 3 manufacturers. Oh well.

    • @watercraftjournal
      @watercraftjournal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clearly you're not as observant as you think you are. Did you see what PWC got awarded Watercraft of The Year? Yeah, the Yamaha VX Cruiser HO. Which ski did Kevin personally own, modify and race? A Kawasaki Ultra 310R. So no, the REAL reason you won't see a 3 way comparison is because the OE's don't want one. That's why.
