1:40 Babymetal did try to promote metal in Japan to make metal a bigger genre again like in the past. it seems like that worked metal music sales in general went up in Japan.
And international sales of rock/metal bands from Japan went up as well as Babymetal got Internaltional attention. So you could say they are kind of like a gateway band. But also means some metalheads got into Japanese pop music. Maybe a big surprise or maybe not, because Marty Friedman former MegaDeth has always said Japanese music, including the J-Pop is actually very interesting.
8:40 what a lot of people don't notice is how she is jumping and singing at the same time until 8:48. My guess is this needs a very good control of breath and abdomen.
At least one vocal coach on TH-cam mentioned Su-metal sings around the female vocal-break. I guess you don't agree because mentioned a different range as the soprano or mezosprano range ?
What makes Babymetal interesting is how many different styles/(sub)genres they have in their songs and the combinations. Love to see some reactions from the latest album as you seem to know a bit about the first and second album. Something like Shanti Shanti Shanti or BxMxC would maybe be interesting.
Whatever it is, I just really enjoy Su-metal's singing somehow hits me in the right spot.

BABYMETAL pretty much founded Kawaii Metal, and even today there's not much that's comparable. To me they are the most enjoyable band ever. Whether it's the musicianship, the vocals, the dancing, the compositions, the crowd interaction, the stages, and most importantly, the uplifting smiles, everything is awesome! I have never had more fun with music, they have quickly surpassed my previous favourite band and are here to stay.
Their songs, their appearance and pretty much everything about them is very unique, which is not an easy feat in today's musical landscape.
Oh, and everybody loves BOH, the bassist. I could watch him all day, very charismatic and entertaining.
It's impossible to get a complete picture of them from a single song, so if your interest is piqued, please watch another song or two. To hear more of Su's vocals, I'd recommend "Rondo of Nightmare": th-cam.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/w-d-xo.html . This version also features an instrumental intro where the whole band has a chance to shine. You seem to be interested in the instrumentalists as well, so you might find that interesting.
Edit: Forgot one thing: Kudos for preparing and getting some background infos for your viewers!

If you saw them in N.Y. back in 2016, you probably either attended their concert at the _PlayStation Theater_ on Broadway or you were part of the studio audience when they performed "Gimme Chocolate!!" on the _Late Show with Stephen Colbert_ . Sorry to comment after 2 months. Enjoyed your reaction (even though I unfortunately can't take the analysis seriously because of your choice of source video), but I'm genuinely curious about some things. And found the comment funny about Su not being able to hit higher notes. It's the lower notes she always struggled with in her career. The sound of the venue is just so bad that everything seems like it's performed under a snuggly blanket.
I don't know why teachers, vocal coaches and other people who are knowledgable of music in general bother with trying to analyze festival performances. In 95% of all festivals the sound is just suboptimal or worse than that. The musicians and even more so the singers often don't have more than 5 to 10 minutes to perform a soundcheck and the sound itself is just not what it would normally be in a closed venue because of the general setup on stage and because the sound has nothing to reverberate/reflect off of. Nobody would bother seriously criticizing classical music performances from an open air venue, why do it with modern music. To me, in this video, it sounds like they're playing under a blanket or something. Somehow everythings muffled. Su's voice somehow sounds two octaves lower than it actually is (just talking out of my ass here with the 2 octaves, sorry xD).
The second thing about "you guys" (see above, sorry for generalizing) is, why pick Karate? Because it's probably the most mainstream song of Babymetal? Not trying to criticize the selection, just genuinely curious. It's probably in the bottom 10 technically demanding songs for everyone on stage. Most of the times I see a teacher or coach react to Babymetal it's either Karate or, even worse for analyzing, Gimme Chocolate and then the Babymetal chapter is closed for them without even looking into their more instrumentally or vocally demanding stuff someone can actually give a deeper analysis about.
If you really want to analyze Su and/or the Kami Band, you should check out a performance from a closed venue and a song that actually shows what they're capable of. Some people are suggesting Rondo of Nightmare, which is great because of the instrumental intro and because it's one of the most demanding songs vocally, but it's actually one of the easiest songs for the band to play (quoting Takayoshi Ohmura, one of the Kami guitarists, who said that the song is actually easy for them to play and Su's the genius for nailing her vocals because they're super demanding).
I'd always suggest Akatsuki (live at Budokan or from the Legend 1997 concert (Su's 16th birthday)) because it is, in my opinion, the musically highest quality song overall (vocals, guitars, bass, drums) you can easily find on TH-cam (I think the grammar is just wrong in this sentence, sorry for that, not a native speaker. I hope you get what I'm trying to say). There are even better examples, like Amore, Tales of the Destinies, etc, but there's nothing on TH-cam except maybe bad compilations, which is THE worst thing.

Hi @andoR ! You have made some excellent points and I am happy to discuss them with you!
      1. Every live performance (even if its a festival one) is unique and most importantly raw. Theres a lot of factors that comes in to play that can make a performance great or not so great. It can be from the live sound mix, how long they've been playing, if they were sick, from the points you have mentioned etc. That's all important to take into account and its great to understand those factors and how that comes into play.
You'll be surprised, there are actually a lot of people that go to classical music performances and critique it. There's some people that even look at the music score while the performance is happen to analyze and learn the musical piece in depth. We can hear the same classical piece over and over again but each performance will be different because every musician that are playing is unique and have different skills/techniques.
      2. Karate was picked because it was highly requested at the moment! And I am happy to review other songs from them. Theres a few requested in the other comments which I will look into as well as the one's you've mentioned. But, I am wondering why you suggest a live performance but criticize this live performance. Is it just purely because this performance specifically was from a festival? Every venue has different sound systems and there will be a difference hearing a performance from an indoor and outdoor venue.

    • @ANDOR-
      @ANDOR- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarleneMendozaMusic Thanks for your reply!
      1. That's certainly true that every performance is unique and it would be pretty boring if it wasn't. I'm a biiiig~ fan of live performances. You could say that this is one of my "make or break points" if I like or don't like a band. In your particular video, what I was trying to say is, that you can't really musically analyze a performance of a band or a vocalist by a festival performance because the circumstances under which they play will never be focussed on sound. You can certainly say "this was good/wasn't good", but there's no merit to a musical in depth analysis when it comes to festivals in my opinion. I've been to my fair share of festivals (Rock am Ring a few times, Southside, Knotfest, etc) and live performances and I don't think that I enjoyed more than maybe 10% of bands sound wise at a festival. And some of those were because I probably drank too much "soda" ;). There's no comparison to actual live shows under a roof in my eyes.
I think you misunderstood my classical music part. I meant that nobody will judge or seriously critique a classical music piece in an outdoor performance. Every competition or concert that's focussed on performance and sound will be an indoor performance, mostly in especially for-music-built venues even, because there are way too much nuances that get lost in open air concerts and the sound will never be how it's supposed to be or wanted. I think that's almost always true for every kind of music.
      2. Thanks for the answer, I was really intrigued by "why Karate". And I have to say sorry because I generalized the heck out of every person with musical knowledge on TH-cam. Should have definitely phrased that different. It's pretty cool, that you want to listen to more than one or two songs from single bands. There are a lot of people who give in-depth critique on bands and they're just picking the song with the most views and then never listen to a thing of this particular band again, regardless of how they liked the song. So, again, sorry for putting you in that category without even thinking about it.
I picked a live performance because I mostly listen to live stuff from bands in general. If someone recommends me a band, I always go directly to a live song to listen to them. It's the best way for me to really see what a band can do and how they sound (you should give a listen to Band-Maid live. They'll rock your socks off xD). There were way too many bands in my almost 20 years of listening to metal and rock that I really liked and then really disappointed me when I heard them live for the first time (looking especially at Limp Bizkit).
I didn't like this one solely because it was a musical analysis based on a festival performance. That doesn't mean I didn't like the performance they showed, I loved it actually (under the circumstances they were given). I think Babymetal and the Kamis are one of the best bands out there at the moment when it comes to festival performances and adjusting to what they are given. Like I said before, I think you can say that the performance was good/cool/whatever, but I don't think that someone can or should give a musical analysis based on a festival performance because there are too many circumstances that prevent an objective critique on what they can do (don't know if you saw, but it even rained cats and dogs in this video, not that it influenced this particular song, but it's a circumstance, too).
With Babymetal it's a pretty unique case even. I love their studio stuff, but live is on another level. I don't think I would have become a real fan only listening to their studio stuff. Japanese producers, especially those who come out of Pop/J-Pop tend to really overproduce songs, especially the vocals. The vocals are way too smoothed out (is that something you can say?) and focussed and the band is pushed solely in the background in most songs because of it. That's certainly not a good basis for a metal or rock band in my eyes. There are even songs I don't really like on the album but LOVE live (Headbanger for example) because of that.
Sorry for the wall of text and again, thanks for replying and I hope you stay safe and keep up the good work in those challenging times! :)

@@ANDOR- I think the critique is fair, but Su is not a classicly trained vocalist, yes she has had plenty of coaching over the years, but the whole package is how she should be judged as an entertainer not just a singer and in that regard I would suggest there are few around today that could challenge her and I'm sure history will rank her amongst the very best.

    • @ANDOR-
      @ANDOR- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@chrisharris1522 If you refer to my "she struggled with lower notes": it's just something either herself or someone close to Babymetal/Sakura Gakuin said some time ago. I think it was herself in an interview sometime between 2013 and 2016.
I don't know what your definition of "classicly trained is", but she is training as a/to be a vocalist since she's 5 or 6 years old. The vocal training in Japan is a lot different than it is in the "western world", so I don't think there is a consensus to "classicly trained" here. But I think she has more vocal talent in her little finger than most of the Billboard Top 50 combined, so I don't really care how she was trained. But I hope it was in a healthy way, so we can enjoy her for years to come. Unfortunately Japanese vocal coaches don't have the best reputation when it comes to longevity of their students.
I absolute agree with you. I don't think I've seen someone who isn't in this business for 15 or 20 years+ with that much of a stage presence in my almost 20 years of listening to Rock/Metal music or even music in general.

@@ANDOR- I just meant that she isn't like a classically trained opera singer that spends several hours a day every day singing scales over and over to hone her voice to absolute perfection. So it is a little unfair to pick on one slightly missed note when you would not hold any of the other "greats"to that same standard, also taking into account her age most singers continue to improve and mature as they get older and we have seen in the last year or two this is definitely true and I expect she will just keep getting better.

Hello Marlene ! During the call and response time with the crowd you appeared to think she missed a note but in my opinion she didn't ? I'd like you to correct me if I'm wrong on this tough !
Also as for technicality, they have songs/performances that showcase how much technical they can go but as you've pointed out, that's not necessarily the point of music. Some bands like to make it all about technicality and forget the melody.
If you really wanted them to impress you with technicality, I think you should check out their Tales of The Destinies song/performance (Tokyo Dome, also 2016). That song is full-on prog-metal with a few dozen different time signatures. It also came off pretty good. As for the technicality of being able to sing right while dancing and jumping around, I'm sure that you know how hard it must be and how much work it takes ;).
I really loved the reaction though. On what occasion did you see them live ? Was it a full venue concert or by passing on some music festival ? I really like that you've been giving a very concise but good summary of their background and what they're all about before going for the reaction. Su does not lipsync in any show i've heard so far its easy to notice... there are some parts in babymetals shows they are lipsyncing and its quite easy to hear if you know the original track audio but only a mere few in my opinion... Great reaction i would love you to react more to them they are very different and have lots of styles mixed inside their music so i think you will find a lot of inetresting songs...

Yui and Moa are only ever advertised as Dance and Scream, which they always do live, they never claim to be singing.

I agree with you about the fun factor. But they can be extremely technical when they want to be. Check out 'Tales of the Destinies' it's pretty ridiculous. th-cam.com/video/JQdbdD1X9NU/w-d-xo.html

A “rock musician and music teacher” but can’t tell how technical the music is and seems obsessed with waiting for a high note to be sung as if it’s the most important thing….🙄

I've watched a few of your reactions before, but this one was just shocking especially considering you're a "rock musician and music teacher". You just seemed to have a set of expectations from the start, and your final assessment of the band (nothing complex but at least they're having fun) was from ignorance. If you said that about the song then fine. That's understandable, but you said BABYMETAL has nothing complex about them. If you just hop on TH-cam and check out...I don't know...their most popular live video, you'd realize how unintelligent that comment is.
    Sincerely,
    Not a triggered BABYMETAL fan.

To be fair this is one of their more simple songs, as far as comp goes. I would also like to add that this is sung in the lower part of Su's range she can go a lot higher, and does so with a lot of power, also it was raining that could have messed with her voice a little.

@@chrisharris1522 what you're saying is definitely plausible. Karate isn't even one of my favourites tbh (I'm in love with the second half of the song though). As I said in my comment, I'd not have taken issue if her opinion was about the song alone. i had a problem with her assessment of the band in that their music is "nothing complex, but at least they're having fun". Again, it's about the context. This is coming from a rock musician/teacher who's seen BM live.

@@aamiw99 I agree, it is not one of my favourites either, its ok but I feel it was produced more to fit a market rather than representative of the total creative freedom we see in most of their other stuff.
