    Thanks for this, just some more information. I have about 125 Areca palms here in swfl. Just so you know, I had standing water for almost 2 months right before and after hurricane Irma (2017) and the areca’s did not get damaged at all. Water was below the base by about 6”. I have them on a raised mound. Also, they grow about 18” a year down here and cleaning them keeps me active! I fertilize with 8-10-10. Love Areca palms!

    Thanks, I just cleaned mine out last weekend, so I could see the base. Had no idea what kind of palm or how to care for them till I found your video. Live in Florida the cluster is in the ground we live on the water. Truly a beautiful plant.

    Great video! I have a love/ hate relationship with my Areca Palm... It grows pretty slow for me, basically not at all during winter. I got a Sealing Wax Palm this spring, which I want to take center stage. So my areca might get a “hardiness test”… Kinda surprising to hear they can take temperatures below frost! I always have compost in my potting mix, and I do use biochar. How’s your garden outside?

    I have 3 indoor arecas. One 4.7 ft and one baby and a 1.7 foot one. I use cactus soil that has bark. Worm castings and must weekly. They are in a bright room that has half sun and humidity is a constant 50% and its 65 to 69F all winter in here. They're doing pretty well. Though one cane to me with root rot so I'm treating that one.

    Just found an Areca palm today at a local Lowe’s. Grabbed their last one. I am so glad to hear that I can grow it outside! Reading different websites made me think they would burn in the sun. I am in zone 9b here about 45 minutes NW of Tampa, on the west shore directly on a canal. We usually have nice steady breezes and plenty of humidity. I am stoked to be able to grow this on the south facing deck. 😎

    I live in north FL, in the panhandle, and I wish this would live here as they do in South FL; it gets to low 20s, some years on the teens and kills the palms... How big of a pot do you have them in? I might get a few and put them on pots bring them in when it hits 20s.

      kenleybrame I live in Tampa so I wouldn't bring them in here. But I don't grow palm trees, I grow frankincense & myrrh trees. But I'd do what I've seen others do and wrap them in blankets or if you've room inside just bring them in.

    Hi Jeff is there a difference between the Areca Palm and the Golden Cane Palm. Or is the latter a subtype of Areca. I notice that the Arecas may have one main huge trunk/stem whereas the Golden Cane has about 4 thick sugar cane like trunk/stems where little shoots will sometimes emerge. I have both types in pots at home.

  • @TheAdgjl7
    @TheAdgjl7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have planted my golden canes on the top side of a wooden retainer wall because i had heard that they are the best to grow around a pool so i thought these would be good. Now it appears that they are pushing the wall out. Should i dig them out. If so what should i replace them with.

    I live in Fla. My beautiful Areca Palm around 20' is growing under my screened patio in a huge pot. I think that the trunk(not the fronds) is getting too closed to the top of my screen so i am getting worried that it will perforate the screen if it keeps growing. Should I cut the top of the trunk that is closer to the screen? Thanks

    Thank you for the video. I have several in my yard that I planted for privacy. I live in Tampa, Florida and we have sandy soil that drains well. Thry are planted in full sun. Im trying to figure out with mine if Im watering them too much or not enough. I have several of them that has yellowing leaves and yellow leaf stems. For a while I was watering them daily but I backed off because I heard thry can get too much water. What are your thoughts

      In full sun,they show their golden colour which is easy to confuse for yellowing.

    Just got that areca from a flee market this summer it was brought here NC from florida but please tell me how to winterize it for winter...do i fertilize first please hel first one and first winter....

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I would not fertilize it unless the room you are moving it into is very very warm and it will stay growing in high activity. Not good to fertilize when temps are dropping bc it sets the plants into fast and active growth which will cause them more harm when temps dip.
      Indoors they like a very bright location, as much light as you can give them. They also like a lot water, so it is best to avoid allowing the plant to dry out for more than a few days. If the tips of the leaves (fronds) start to yellow, that is normally an indication of the air being too dry. If they yellow from the base and outward that usually means too much water. When I move mine inside they tend to have some fronds brown and die off, that is fairly normal. Oh, and if possible, it is good to rotate them occasionally, maybe every other week so the foliage gets even lighting. :)

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! If they're grown under their ideal conditions, they will put on about a foot of growth each year. They will keep growing as long as you have them, so eventually they'll outgrow most homes unless the homes have ridiculously high ceilings.

    1 thing i keep hearing over and over again (here in finland) is that you can't grow many stems in same pot and you should always took them apart from each other or areca palm will kill all of the stems. Is that the truth?

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes the growers will overcrowd the pots when they are small and seedling size. By the time they are up to a 10inch pot they should be thinned out enough to be ok. They naturally sucker, so even if they get thinned out, it's possible they'll fill right back out. Since they are considered a clustering/suckering palm I'd say it is unnecessary unless it is a small plant.
