Maceió is a Brazilian municipality , capital of the state of Alagoas , in the Northeast Region of the country . It occupies an area of 509.5 km², [ 2 ] being 2,013 km from Brasília . [ 1 ] It is the most populous municipality in Alagoas , and its population in 2020, estimated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), is 1 025 360 inhabitants, [ 6 ]being the fourteenth Brazilian capital to exceed the mark of one million resident inhabitants, and the fifth in the Northeast. It integrates, with ten other municipalities from Alagoas, the Metropolitan Region of Maceió , totaling about 1.3 million inhabitants in 2015, [ 7 ] being the most populous in Alagoas, being the 6th largest in the Northeast and the 23rd in the entire country.
The city has an average annual temperature of 25 to 29 degrees centigrade. In the original vegetation of the municipality, the presence of herbs (grasses) and shrubs (few and spaced trees) can be observed. With an urbanization rate of around 99.75 percent, its Human Development Index is 0.721, considered high by the United Nations Development Program and the first in the state.
It borders cities such as São Luís do Quitunde , Rio Largo , Satuba , Marechal Deodoro , Paripueira , among others, to which it is connected by the BR-101 , BR-104 , BR-316 and AL 101, Maceió is the main city of the state and, currently experiencing intense economic and infrastructure growth, being a city considered regional capital A, according to the urban hierarchy of Brazil . It is the largest Brazilian producer of rock salt . Its diversified industrial sector is composed of chemical, sugar and alcohol, cement and food industries. has agriculture, livestock and natural gas and oil extraction . It has the highest gross domestic product in the state, 9,143,488,000 reais : the 40th highest in Brazil.
The festivities held in the city annually attract a huge amount of tourists. Maceió Forró e Folia, Maceió Verão and the extinct carnival event Maceió Fest can be mentioned, [ 8 ] in addition to its Christmas parties and New Year's Eve parties such as Réveillon Absoluto, Réveillon Paradise, Allure and Réveillon Celebration . [ 9 ] It has important monuments, museums, such as the Mirante da Sereia, the Gogó da Ema Memorial, the Teotônio Vilela Memorial, the Republic Memorial, the Floriano Peixoto Palace Museum , the Théo Brandão Museum, the Teatro Deodoro.
