With NHL free agency kicking off today, Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee start the three-hour special edition by reviewing some of the morning moves. They start with live reaction to Stamkos signing with the Predators before touching on the Leafs bringing in Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Then, they get more in-depth on Toronto's moves - Stolarz's role, Tanev's term and Domi's hometown discount. Later, they discuss Reinhart's contract with the Panthers, Matt Murray re-upping in Toronto, the Canucks landing DeBrusk and the Leafs sticking with Liljegren. After, they add some thoughts on Mitch Marner before getting into Steven Stamkos.

Where is our forward for Bert, maybe 3rd line center, Lilly needs to go , kamph and I think one more, can remember who, Robertson? I could keep going but not as good as last year? We are going to change it up , I am waiting……. Change the four or five ? ……….. come on!!!!!!!
Their endless support and adulation for a group of players that will never get it done is mind blowing! My 40 plus year love affair with this organization is slowly coming to an end.

Tampa will be stronger nxt season. Great signings. They know how to do it. Leafs dont. Mediocre signings. And Marner case is unsolved. Uff.
Idk, Stamkos, Jeannette and Sergechev for Guentzel, MacDonnaugh and Geekie seem like a wash but Geekie could be the next superstar for them. 6'4" centres with skill are hard to find, but the Whl and NHL are two different animals. But if he's what I think he can be it's massive. Good move for Utah as they needed a top 1 and 2 d man
Bourne is right on with his leafs takes. Very questionable possibly dumb signings today. This team will have all of the same problems . What a nightmare.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. More shuffling without getting the two defenseman they need. Zadorov to Bruins is a real gut punch.
Strongly disagree. I don't see how you can look at this defense and think its not better then last year's at this time. If Cowan or minten can make the jump we got great young talent filling in holes on ELCs. With the money they have this year, I don't know what else you want them to do with Mitch and JT on NMC. Florida lost a lot, Tampa net loss with Stammer and Sergachev gone, Boston signed some boston guys which is scary - but also super overpaid on term and value. Also lost debrusk and may lose BOTH their goalies.
@@jumperemann2 Kipper made a great point about getting Tanev; "excellent, its what you wanted!" five years ago..?" They did what they could at the moment and unfortunately its looking like the same next year. Replacing these players with the only pieces available every year and not actually addressing problems. The team is still soft with Domi and Tanev.
Mariner is a talent that is soft and doesn’t show up when it counts. Best they could do is trade him and get some cap space. He has been that way a long with the other core for how many years? Team is built wrong and a long way to being playoff competitive
None of them do though. Other guys are playing with broken ribs, hands and sternums while the leafs have guys missing for headaches and the flu.........just saying
Zadorov to the Bruins hurts a lot. Boston fans have to be loving this deal though he'll fit in so well there.

OEL was the biggest surprise of the season for the panthers last year. He was so so so steady. Rarely made a mistake, really good skater, and the thing that impressed me the most was his defensive ability and he was surprisingly tough to play against. Take it from a panthers fan who watched every game last season. He was very good. Worth the money IMO

Edmundson loss is significant for Leafs. One of the most underrated playoff Dmen in league.

Leafs D, goaltending improved. Ideally Knies can fill Bertuzzi's old role and McMann can get to 20 goals. And Toronto has a real NHL coach finally. The team is much better.
When analysts say they're not happy with the Leafs decisions means it was a great decision for the team

For the Stolarz signing, he had great numbers on the best team in the league, so his stats its more fiction than fact.
Tanev signing is fine if you believe that the last couple years will be LTIR
Domi signing is solid, good price and term for a middle six guy
Missing out on Zadorov was a mistake. They spent that money on OEL (who shoots left, which they don't need) and Hakanpaa (who does shoot right, which is good).

All those players you want on the leafs would be too expensive, you're forgetting the thing you called out "no state tax" and these guys already signed for a lot on those other teams for long term.

They signed 1 top pairing defenseman. 1 3rd pair in Eckman-Larson and re-signed Liljegren. The D are still not very good. The goalie situation is sketchy. You have a guy with very little experience and I jury prone and a guy that's never played 30 games in a season. Plus your safety net is Murray. Not a big improvement.

tanev is another brodie at this stage of his career, he blocks shots but doesn't hit except tanev is going to be injury prone. oliver ekman is no kleinberg, he will score and is very physical.
McKee making a big deal of Florida tax advantages when Matthews pays less tax than any player on the Panthers is rich. FYI Montour’s $8.5m contract in Florida is NOT $11.5m anywhere else because Montour still pays Federal Income Taxes.
This core four(5 including Reilly) can't do it. To much money into 4 players. Trade Reilly and Marner, let Tavares walk.. 8 years we've seen the same result. It won't change.. first round exit again with this core. Period...

On top of the increased salary cap, Leafs will have $22 million in cap space from Marner & Tavares off the books next year=👍

Toronti will load up on big D this srason and just ride out the Tavares and Marner contracts so they can get McDavid next season that wants to play in Toronto .They will bulk on D men to get ready for it .

I heard from everyone in the past 5 years that the defense is a suspect, too small, and no grit. Under the circumstances with the salary restraint, the defense just got big and mean. With a new coach and a better defense and goalies, it will be an interesting year.

The Murray signing is not bad .Low risk with the potential for high reward I think neither Murray nor Woll is capable of playing 50-60 games BUT if they can play 60 combined between the 2 of them that would be enough to get this team to 100 points again .Then if 1 can get hot ( and healthy )in the playoffs ,.....................................................

Morgan Reilly is a second paring defence, and nobody wants to admit it. He’s a great guy, great teammate, but he cant be PP1. Puck dies on his stick, no one timer, no slap shot, almost never gets the puck through from the point, or for a tip.
And offence is supposed to be the strong part of his game. He's a good second pairing D.
Typical LEafs free agency day ,They check almost all the boxes as previous years 1. got a goalie ( actually 2 ) off the scrap heap Check . 2. got 2 lefty D men which they have plenty of check . 3. The core 4 is still intact and all signs point to starting the year with the SAME old core 4 .check . So how is this team a better tplayoff team than the one that lost game 7 just 2 months ago .A few supporting players were added but as long as this core 4 is run back this team is still going no where .Tavares has to go somehow .That is the only way this team will improve in the playoffs

Zadorov in a bruins jersey will show up when it counts. He didn't just sign with the Bruins because of the money but also because of opportunity and culture. A culture of expecting to be a professional and live up to the challenges in front of you. He and Lindholm are Bruins type system players. They also left room for internal growth and expectations with Poitras, Lohrei, Beecher, Brazeau, Lysell, Geekie and others which is what Boston also needs.

The nhl should make the cap same across all teams . If you have no tax then other team have extra. Make it the same for all , if not than open the cap what I am saying is no cap and see how that would work for some and not others.
This is the best they could do within the constraints they have which includes management intelligence/capability. Draft and development is the way to go, but until recently is completely alien to the Leafs. Free agency is the most expensive/inefficient way to build your team and is a fundamental management flaw (something not alien to the Leafs). The more things change, the more they stay the same, very "ballardesque." But remember "we're not here to see jerseys", really?!!
