    One thing they should do is to cut those long exposed bolts of the head stock off at the bottom since there an injury just waiting to happen. Its also advisable to have the feed bin not on the ground but higher so Azalea can feed more easily and not jam herself down to get it like now. All still needs to add ballast to their dock floats like sand so it sits lower in the water and it will be more stable so it won't rock as much...🐟🐟

    Good morning guys! We are still having smoke from the forest fires in Quebec. Hard on the eyes and throat. Outdoor activities are limited but I have projects to do in the house - so we are ok. Hope everyone is happy and healthy!! Oh by the way - scoop up dead grass in pond and put it on your gardens - does a great job.

    I think it would be great to get Gina a fly road and teach her how to use it. A great pond to learn on. By the way, some of that floating grass provides cooler habitat for some of the fish, too, so don’t take all of it off the surface of the pond, as a suggestion. But the water is nice and cool anyway since it’s spring fed. What fun!
    I worked at a resort in Ontario in ‘68 and helped build a floating dock. A plate attached to the end of the dock with a hole through which a metal pipe was inserted helped to keep the dock in place. Might work for your dock platform, too. Even if you extend it. Or, half fill the barrels to keep the dock more stable. Really nice you folks. You are so blessed.

    We had 50+ Jerseys on our farm when I was a boy and never trusted them to not kick or step in a bucket. They may only do it because a fly lands on them and annoys them and this also applies to the tail as it can give you a decent whip across the head. We would let the milk settle in the refridgerator in a wide bowl and the wide top helped us to skim the cream off the top, as the Jersey milk was too rich for us to use as full cream.

    • @dapacathomeca8232
      @dapacathomeca8232 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Just like Rob and a few others, I grew up on a registered Jersey farm (my dad was the Extension Dairyman for the State of Mississippi -- Cooperative Extension Service) and we had really top-notch, award-winning Jerseys. We always milked by hand, so our grip became very strong (my wife still chastises me for shaking people's hands too hard, but I can't help it). And, just like you, all our animals had names and we pampered them so much that they were like family members.
      The cash awards from showing them in dairy shows paid college tuition for my brothers and me. What a grand adventure!
      Oh, and I know you are careful to do this, but the cattle really like for the cloth you use to clean their udder before milking needs to be warm (soothing).
      Keep up the great work!

    Goooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia ,
    Even a very cheap fly rod and reel from some place such as WalMart will work well . I'm still using cheap fly rod that I got from K-Mart 30 years ago. It is not hard to learn to cast a fly line. Push comes to shove , you can even cast a fly line without a rod. As in so many things , practice makes perfect.

Thanks for showing the stocking of the pond. Too bad Gina had problems fishing. Do you ever use bobbers? That helps me know the fish are biting. I live in Minnesota so we fish lakes from the shore and docks many times. I leave the line in a while before I reel it in and I reel it in slowly. I use worms. Good luck fishing again! We are keeping the bucket between our knees when we are milking because then the bucket is safe if the cow kicks or moves. We then have to have a higher milkingstool. You are holding the bucket firmly between your knees. That we had to do from early age, I think we was seven years maximum when we learned to milk cows and goats. She looks like a very calm cow, that is good.

    When hand milking it may be easier to place your 12-14 quart stainless milking pail into the top of a 5 gallon plastic bucket. The rim of the pail should be big enough to keep the pail from sliding down into the bucket. This provides a larger base to keep from tipping over and up closer to the teats. The Amish here in north east Missouri taught me that trick. Also best to cool your milk in cold tap water before putting into fridge.

  • @bettrho2490
    @bettrho2490 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hi Lumnah family - Just a note (although Azalea seems odd be very sweet natured) I’ve always heard that you should stand very close to the back leg when cleaning/milking. That way if the animal kicks that leg won’t get up enough speed to do as much damage. (Think of the Devo song “Crack that Whip.”)

    I'm not a farmer, but there was a dairy farm down the road. They would sell a gallon for $1. Help yourself. There were directions. AI used an Ice tea bottle with the spout at the bottom. After the milk sat for a day or so, I could use the lowfat milk through the spout and make butter from the cream. Press the buttermilk out of the cream and use that for cooking or salad dressing. I got a lot of bang for my buck. Love to all from NC.

  • @pippaseaspirit4415
    @pippaseaspirit4415 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s best not to milk through a straining cloth but to strain afterwards. This is because you can actually “jet wash” particles so the bacteria from them are more likely to be mixed in with the milk; just letting the particles stay floating in the milk actually causes less bacteria to come off them. This was the advice given to us many years ago by a local authority health inspector.

    Gina, you did a great job milking! Those fish have a perfect home. I have to smile whenever you show your game camera footage on your little phone screen. Usually the pics are so small or it's the bad outside lighting or just when we're focusing in on the pic you change pics, lol! This time I actually saw the bear, hardly saw the moose. Maybe next time you can please download the footage to laptop to show inside the house under better lighting?

    The open bale reel that feel apart on Gina likely did so because the drag dial that held it together was close to being totally unscrewed when happened. This variety of reel doesn't need to spin to cast out a line as many do it even of the closed variety but its drag dial needs be checked each time its used just in case. I suggest a closed reel with an adjustable drag knob for now since there nearly impossible to come apart completely and predicting casting is easily as well. When casting you release the line before a throw is finished and a short cast often happens because it too late and the inertia is lost at the end when the cast is finished. Gina can practice on dry land with just a weight on the line since they have the space and often letting the line out 2\3 or more not full of the way on a cast is better. If you like to cast then reel back in again try swimming bait like minnow or fly do to get them to strike since no bait us required and its practically irresistible to them. If you like to cast n wait kelp a finger on the line after its tensioned so you'll feel them biting at it so you can set the hook with a small jerk on the rod.🐳🐳🐳

    I would love to see Al and Gena using a 2wt Fly Rod, nothing bigger than a 4w. I'm partial to Orvis and they have a nice 2wt 10' Clearwater Fly Rod that would be a great rod for getting the fly where you want it. A 2w will make you a better fisherman than a 4w or larger and make you a great fisherman if you can land a 2lb trout. I used to use 1/8lb tippet on mine and was a good fight to land a -1lb Trout in South Lake above Bishop, California. My biggest at South Lake was a 12.4lb Brown Trout on a 6wt, took me 20 minutes to land him.

      For those who wonder what a "2-3w" (2 weight) and a "4-6w" is, it refers to the pole and line's ability to catch fish up to that weight using skill. The higher the number, the bigger the fish one can catch. A 2-3 weight (2w or 3w) fly rod should catch pan fish or small trout, a 4-6w a "general purpose" for trout and small bass, 7-8w for Larger freshwater Bass, Pike and Steelhead, 9-10w for Salmon, Striped Bass and Snook, and 10w (weight) and up for saltwater and Specialty Fish (Think 100 lbs+).

    When we bushwalk through an area that we know has ticks we wrap packaging tape around our ankles inside out. Yes sticky side out. the leg of out pants comes down over it but since there is no pressure it doesn't really stick to the pants. The sticky side catches most of the ticks so that you can walk with a little confidence that ticks won't get where it really matters.

    Good evening, I think it depends on how much milk you need each day for family use. As for the other things your wanting to do with her milk and cream, as a family of three you should already know ruffly how much you use each day. At the moment Cooke will need his mothers milk to help him grow nice and big which will benefit you when it’s that time for the dinner table. The first few weeks of the calf’s life is the most important time for them.
    I put solid tyres on all my wheel barrows after Dad had filled it with just a little too much air, the minute I bumped it down the steps it exploded, frighten the heck out of me it sounded like a bomb going off, thought I was back in London in the 70’s, must admit I prefer the solid tires moving them around now are really easy even when totally full.

      Al and Gina the pond is idyllic . The trees in full foliage add to the majesty of it all. Love the contrast of the rushes. And the wildlife-just amazing! Think how much more is hidden in the forest!
      Azalea is one humdinger of a cow-first time Mum and milked. I would lift the feed bowl up so it is more comfortable for her. Also use your body to block that back leg when washing, milking etc. Put the bucket between your knees/ stops spills.
      Halter the calf during milking aids manageability. Check with Justin Rhodes re timing for calf sharing. You could calf share in the barn gradually extend the withdrawal time. Say 10 pm, 9 pm, 8 pm etc. helps to gain volume amount of milk with little stress to the animals. You could also put out some calf starter feed so Mum and babe feed at the same time. Roughly three months old is good.
      Do you have to filter milk at the stanchion? Makes it a long time for all.
