That's a tough one. It's mostly by trial and error. The more you do the more you have a better idea as to what it takes. And still it doesn't always work out and you have to go back and either add or subtract weight. The first time I weighted a fish decoy it didn't even sink. So don't let the weighting part discourage you. Thanks for the question and I hope this helps.
