      Alec Scholten, Hi! You did an awesome job filming this monster! Do you remember/recall how fast were you driving while filming the first 2 minutes 20 seconds? You and that tornado were rolling very fast! I was just wondering how fast( mph) you guys were driving just to keep up with it....
      We're so glad that you guys are safe. You're neighbor in Maryland

      @@charlottewhite1277 We were going right around the posted speed limit of the highway, which I believe was 60mph.
      There was no need to go super fast, as the tornado was solidly in view and we were just trying to judge exactly where it was going to cross the North/South highway we were on.

      0:50 I am so glad that you are smart, when you said “that’s on the ground “, so many storm chasers from days gone by, would not say that it’s on the ground until they see it “visually “ on the ground, and this is not right. Most tornadoes are digging up ground when the condensation funnel isn’t visible completely to the ground. I hated when they would say this, because a tornado can be causing havoc on the ground below it, without a visible vortex on the ground. If you twirl your hand in a sink full of water, you will see a vortex appear, but it might not reach the bottom of your sink, but in fact, it is still picking up debris from the bottom of your sink, think about it everyone.

    • @flashy5150
      @flashy5150 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When a vortex hits the ground, you have a “faster spinning vortex”. The faster it spins, the farther and faster it goes to the ground. When a wedge happens, this means that it’s spinning very fast, and the wind in there is incredible. It doesn’t have any farther to move downward, so it starts to spread out wider. Spin your hand in a sink full of water and see how it works. First, spin it slow, the speed it up a little, then go the fastest, and you will see how a tornado works. It’s the same as a whirlpool, but with air. Both kinds are fed with humidity. If we could remove the ground under a tornado, the tornado will dies instantly, why ?, because it doesn’t have that ground to strengthen itself on. A tornado “needs the ground” to survive.

      I just saw the interview on Inside Edition. I hope this is really the real person. Otherwise this is a cruel and sick joke pretending to be her. But if it really is the same young lady, I'm sorry for the loss. I couldn't imagine losing my children, spouse, and parent on the same day. No one can say they know what that's like unless it's happened to them. Terrible circumstances. People take for granted how lucky and blessed they are. I live in Norwalk. I work nights and had just woke up to go to work. My company texted and said stay home until the storm passes. A few minutes later I received a text that a tornado was on the ground in Norwalk. I wasn't hearing anything other than some rain and hail so I walked outside to look. It was totally calm. Little did I know that just a few miles away all of this was going on. I live on the opposite end of Norwalk from where the Tornado hit which is only a few miles. Very Scary!

      I guess I agree and disagree. Most of the time people just don't know there's a tornado cause of many things. There's no clear line of sight sometimes. Storm cells that could produce terrifying tornados like this one are usually miles wide, so you don't know where a tornado will touch down. And it only takes seconds for a tornado to get full force. It's not like these people are trying to be ignorant of the situation. Sometimes extreme weather develops too quickly to know it's even happening nearby. And tornados can move faster than a car cause they don't obey traffic laws. XD Also, the NWS aren't always super quick to throw the tornado emergency alert out there when extreme weather is happening either.
      When I see these people, I never think, "These people are so stupid. Wtf?" My first thought is always, "I don't care how or why you got here, just keep driving you lucky son-of-a-bitch."

    I am from the area and do storm spotting for the DSM NWS. I have a spot I sit right off of I-35 between Winterset and Norwalk and wait for storms from the SW. I was out of town for work then and just watched helplessly from Florida while texting family and friends in the paths of the multiple tornadoes from that storm system. The loss of life is devastating but Iowa is strong and resilient! ❤️

    My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected. We ourselves survived a mile wide F4 tornado. It's so much more than the immediate destruction you have to deal with, it's also losing everything around you that says "I'm home". The familiar landmarks, spots you made memories in, the places people lost their life at. It's been almost 3 years since our event happened and I still feel like I'm visiting another location. I wish I could tell these folks when they can expect to feel like things are back to normal, but I can't. We still aren't there yet.
    Bizarrely 3 of the victims of this storm are from our metro area. What are the odds.

      @Michael Williams It was the Lawrence-Linwood-Bonner Springs storm. Things more or less are good. I still miss the landscape that we picked our property for, but the new growth did amazingly well this year despite the drought, and is hiding the scars. Mostly I'm thrilled to be back under the canopy. I think all the fertilizer that came from the green house is what has the trees at 5 year growth instead of 2½. I'm glad your Dad made it home that night. God Bless.

      @@allenmarvetsthewildbuck3205 I am pretty sure Parkersburg was an ef-5. The winterset tornado the ground for 69 miles. The Parkersburg tornado was only on the ground for 43 miles. As for the ratings the Parkersburg tornado had 200 mph winds while the winterset tornado had wind speeds of 170 mph.

    So I live in Clinton. Our sirens went off twice. I'm actually from the state of Oregon so this whole tornado thing is new to us. When the sirens go off is it time to head to the basement? And how safe is being in the basement? My daughter gets so scared every time this happens so I have to try really hard being scared myself to help her feel like we're going to be ok.

    Just because you have never been hit by one, don’t believe it can’t. They can hit ANYWHERE at ANY time. I live in Southern California, when I was in college we had an EF0 Form about 5 miles from us in an Orange Grove. It took the roof off of a Supermarket. That was at least 20 years ago, when we still had rainy winters. How can you tell if a tornado is going to retrograde by sniffing it?

      The Enhanced Fujita scale is based solely on damage, meaning this tornado could have very well packed EF-5 capable wind-speeds at some point during its lifecycle, but unless EF-5 worthy damage indicators were found by the NWS Survey team, it would be assigned a lower rating.
