The blurb that BM released with this MV speaks of the yin-yang duality of reality, and although "yin-yang" isn't in the lyrics, you do get the opposites: light and darkness, hope and despair. Yin-yang is about complementarity, where the polar opposites become one. A tropological interpretation of the lyrics is that they're about the complementarity of the One and the Other One. The word that's used for "duality" in the blurb, 二面性, has the character for face/mask/surface 面, and in the lyrics it says "take off the mask" (面)-that's where the duality is transcended and Oneness achieved.

It’s a good day to be a BABYMETAL fan! Fresh from the unveiling of the duo on our spring issue of the magazine, talking about their highly-anticipated return, the band have also just dropped a new single: Light And Darkness.
The track is taken from BABYMETAL’s upcoming album THE OTHER ONE, which is due out on March 24. Speaking exclusively to Kerrang! about the themes of the record, SU-METAL explains that it “revolves around the idea of perception in that what you see and understand may only reveal one side of the truth. Therefore, it dives into exploring the ‘other side’.”
“Through the parallel world called the METALVERSE, THE OTHER ONE restoration project began,” continues MOAMETAL. “THE OTHER ONE is comprised of 10 myths and it reveals the BABYMETAL that we’ve never encountered before. It is a multiverse story that transcends several dimensions from the past, present and future. And the concept album THE OTHER ONE consists of 10 tracks that were based on each of the 10 themes that have been discovered along the way. Some of the songs transcend time and space, restoring our voices that have been recorded in the past and merging them with our current voices.”

Great reaction. It is definitely a song that leans a long way towards the pop end of the BABYMETAL sliding scale, further than most I'd say. However, this was the studio audio and I have read the live version is ... different. We can only wait for the DVD to hear the live audio and see how much different of course.

@@Jordan-RamsesBABYMETAL have always had songs on the poppier side. When played live they’re much heavier than the studio version. If you’ve listened to the live version of Light and Darkness, Su’s vocals and the drums dominate.
Other tracks like Mirror Mirror, Believing, MAYA, METALIZM are as heavy as anything they’ve produced. It’s why you need to judge a concept album with a full play through.

A heavier version was performed live.
This music video version seems to have a stronger J-Pop element.
This MV was filmed on January 28 and 29, the same days as Metal Kingdom
I was seated on KAMI's band side on the 28th, so I was able to see the massive and intense performance right in front of me.
Although they don't appear in the music video, the members of KAMI band are conventional members, and they were playing happily 😁
METAL KINGDOM has decided to stand up for freedom! Finally, the DIVINE ATACK order has been given. The battle has made us lose our colorful and beautiful world. But we have gained the beautiful color of love, and we will cherish that wonderful love. I guess that's what I'm saying .Well, it's my personal fantasy.😁

How many people were holding their breath, as Su's note went higher and higher, and waiting for the beat to drop?... I didn't start breathing again until the instruments kicked back in. Seriously, i think Babymetal has been taking lessons from edm tracks on when to drop the beat.... not that many bands, especially metal, is so good at building up that anticipation before dropping the beat, no one does it as well as Babymetal. Wished Moa's vocal bit was a bit more though, it sound so good. Love how these new songs all are giving Su a lot opportunity to flex her vocal skills...😄😄😄🤘🦊🤘

Great reaction Brian. It's ok that you are late ... helping peoples' well-being is a very worthwhile thing to do as well. You are forgiven.
I'm fractionally torn on this song. It's poppy, it's dance and it has metal elements. It's kind of like buying a Big Mac and the bast**ds stuff it full of lettuce, when all you really want is the beef patties. However, in this song, the lettuce is my favorite part. I get some beef, but for the most part, I like the healthy, lite alternative.
To be fair, musically, this would be one of the strongest track nines on an album I have ever heard. It's a really powerful/encompassing/knitting (I really want to use the word knitting, as L&D really stitches things together) lead-up to the closer. This song might be the actual closer for the shows, even though The Legend comes after it. L&D resolves the entire show, while The Legend lets you know the show is done. Much like Metal Kingdom opens the show, but track one is really Divine Attack.
This is such a killer concert, the set list is fantastic, so I am lining up ready to throw cash at Babymetal as soon as these performances are released on DVD/Blu-ray.
Brian, thanks for reacting to this song. I have noticed that a lot of usual suspects haven't posted a reaction. I can understand this, so please don't think I am criticizing them, but maybe they are exercising a level of our parents' warning: "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything". May I say, I appreciate their opinions and their decorum.

@@GlassMoonGaming I have heard a bootleg of the song live from the January shows. I think it was from the first show when Su was having problems with her In Ear Monitors so her click track was cutting out and messing with her time. Some people are also saying that she was also having some feedback issues relating to the set design (long and narrow) causing some pitch problems.
Whatever the problems were on the first night they were sorted out for night two. In the bootleg I heard, L & D sounded heavier musically than the MV but Su's vocals were a bit pitchy, which could be explained by the technical problems on the first night.

  • @road-runner

    Great reaction as always, thanks!
To be honest, this one is being less controversial than I initially thought. From my point of view, it's far away of my personal musical preferences and I wasn't sure about it at first. But several listens in, the song slowly grew on me, as I was able to identify several cool aspects, apart from the obvious EDM-pop-rock style and Su's gorgeous vocals. Till the moment it hit me emotionally (I need to experience that and some of their songs never reached that point) and then I knew I was sold.
They still have the power to surprise us and I'm so happy about that.
    Until next time!

The most impactful of the so far released songs from the new album.
My very first exposure to this song was at Makuhari Live on the last January 29th in the Super MOSH’SH PIT!! With Kami-Band's crazily spirited performanse, amazing choreo with some Japanese tastes/Butoh texture, and SU-METAL’sSirenic Voice matured to have redoubled lethality as well, the melancholy but intense beautiful melody line gave me goosebumps from the intro. Knockout at first sight/first listen, BABYMETAL’s killer masterpiece in ages for me.
The official digital release was far less impactful than the live, but I was able to follow the lyrics carefully. My personal impression is that it is not just a simple love song. Rather, it sounds to me, in keeping with the concept of the new album, the song is a crying out of a sad but dearest, can’t-give up-on love in the center of this irredeemable one world heading for ruin.
If the Monochrome is a general discussion in dealing with the impending Ragnarok or the ultimate destruction of our world, then the Light and Darkness can be a song depicting one of our particular ordinary but precious and dear everyday lives that may be lost in the imminent doom.
I also feel "Something Uneasy" that Flugelhorn Old Man in Japan commented on Robk's reaction to this MV. If this song was intended to make people feel the frustration of losing love/loved ones, only hats off to them.

This is an excellent piece of work. On first listen I thought it was the weakest of the four songs. Metal Kingdom is an excellent opener that gives me goosebumps. Divine Attack is a banger that gives me goosebumps and headbang. Light and Darkness doesn't give me goosebumps but the more I listen to it the more I love it. The more I watch this MV, the more I can discover more details of choreography and singing. Su-metal uses more singing skills to convey emotion and meaning of words. Moametal's vocals and dancing is really one of the things that attracted me to this show. So now I think Light and Darkness is not inferior to the other three songs.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。As an eyewitness at the venue, I guarantee that the live audio with Kami Band has more power and heaviness to stir your feelings. I assume Amuse is currently releasing MVs with live footage + studio sound, in other words "imperfect live video", on purpose, because they have to block their "real live videos" by copyright strike in order to sell them in a form of Blu-ray/DVD. After some two-year long hiatus, this is a good tool to remind people of the attractiveness of BABYMETAL and gain new fans, I believe.
High and low undulation of Su's voice and sharp moves by Moa and Momoko disordered my emotions 😱. Although I was too mesmerized to digest everything at the live debut, I finally grasped its artistry as a whole by this MV. I am looking forward to seeing the live performance of this song again in two-day shows on both April 1/2.

Different in some ways as I expected, they're not teenage girls anymore. A reminder, Moa "blocks out" the major dance steps and Su works out her breath control as she "learns" the song. Then they finalize their performance.

I have listened to / watched this song at the live performance on January 28. But I don't know if it was like this?.. What the heck am I doing already! And so I have applied some tickets for the 'Mosh'sh pits' in the live shows of 1th & 2th April in Yokohama. I hope I win the tickets, haha.🙏
If I write too much about bad luck for this song, I wonder if it will have a bad influence on the results of the lotteries for the tickets. I am a realist by my own admission and others, but only at times like this I am a fool because I strangely believe in superstitions, lol.
Well, this song, the name of the song seems to be the core that leads to the concept of the next album, and it's already fascinating. I have listened to it pretty many times already, and I don't dislike it. As for the song, when I first heard it, I felt it was little more than a somewhat hard pop song as you said and as I dislike pop music, ha. But I have been beginning to find it more and more thrilling. On the other hand, as for the lyrics, at 3:36, '♫ Being poisoned, falling into a dream, a night when light and darkness seek and play with each other', up to this point it is very seductive, even sensual, so I don't even think Su- should sing such lyrics. And more, now I was able to find out the moment Su- had the breathing, it is so good. Oh, I began to discover more and more things due to you.
Well, but after that, at 3:54, '♫ This love is strong and strong, it won't stop, it will never stop', then it gets kind of stale for me. This is where I'm dissatisfied, huh.. Around here, it has some kind of disco beats?, thanks.
Oh, not good. Better not to say it. I'll be punished for the results of the lotteries...
    Thank you from Japan!

Also notice how The girls are forever evolving as they move forward. And this also seems to upset some who are stuck in the past. You were right, the video footage is from their shows at Makuhari Messe on Jan 28th and 29th (with the studio audio dubbed over it). They had a kind of catwalk going right across the whole venue, splitting the crowd, with the platform on it, so it could move from one side to the other. This gave more people the chance to see them close and the maximum distance wasn't as fas as it would have been if they had teh usual stage setup at one end of the hall.
This song was completely different which is one of the reasons why I love Babymetal so much. Even after almost 13 years, they still manage to surprise me. The song itself is indeed a bit poppy (which is absolutely fine, since they are still a metal fusion band lol) and I love the guitar and piano mixed with the EDM drums. Hey GMG. Nice reaction. I think I agree with you. I think it is the most controversial. I've already seen some people complain about this song being too poppy and no metal. And while I agree with that statement, I don't think its a bad thing. First, if you watch the video and you pay special attention to Su especially, you'll find she really seems to enjoy this song. She's TOTALLY immersed in this song more than usual. She also looks so happy while she's singing this song. It's rare to see her show so much happiness and contentment while singing a song. Not saying she hates her job. We all know she not only loves her job, but lives for it. However, she rarely shows much emotion unless she is purposely conveying that emotion into the music. With this song I get the feeling it's different. I feel she just genuinely enjoys singing this song a lot. Which brings me to my second point. This song really lets her stretch her legs more than most songs vocally. She does deep chest voice vocals, and she does high head voice vocals and everything inbetween. She also uses a lot of vibrato which is quite rare for her. In some songs she'll splash some vibrato here and there, but she rarely uses it often in a song. Finally, I also think this song is a good song for the album, because while you said it is a gateway song to get more people into metal, it could also be used possibly to get more metalheads into JPop type stuff. I feel with this song, a lot of the more hardcore Babymetal fans, after listening to this song, and if they like this song, will realize there is very little metal to this song, yet it is still a very good song and will become a bit curious about JPop. So maybe it will work both ways. Like me personally, the only JPop I've ever listened to are songs from SG when I watch Su, Moa, or Yui sing them.
I also can't wait for the release of the new album when it comes out! I already feel like a little kid the night before XMas, wanting the night to go faster and not being able to fall asleep, but wanting to finally fall asleep so time goes faster lol
I can only hope these young ladies know how important they are to so many of their fans! They truly are a very special group.

I just love this song so much, it's easy my favourite from the new album (until now). I've been waiting for it since they published the first snippet of it. Hearing Su's voice the first time in something new since Metal Galaxy was like an epiphany. I know it's not very hard, and I usually prefer Babymetal to be as hard as possible. But it's just such a beautiful song, especially the chorus. I can also imagine it being played in mainstream radio, maybe they want to get new audience with it.

I didn't expect any of the new songs to be kawaii anymore...but no more thunderous guitars or drums during the songs either???
I personally was hoping for more of that typical Babymetal energy.
And yes...I understand that it's a concept album but the new songs are lacking any surprising elements...something that Babymetal is normally best at.
Babymetal's music has had many facets over the years but it has never been mainstream. The new album sounds mainstream so far...

I hear what you are saying, but I'm also waiting to hear what these sound like live when the Kami band actually plays them! From what I've heard from people who were there, it was amazing!

Historically their live performances have always hit harder than the studio versions, it's why I'm not putting a ton of weight into these "MV" videos where they overlay the studio audio with live footage. What I really want to hear are their actual live performances before I'll really make up my mind about the new album.

I agree with you completely! The "MV" videos give you a good idea of what we're getting, but the live is where it's at. Can't wait!

I think the only thing keeping this song from being a full 1980's retro J-pop Idol song are a couple details in the arrangement. First, it starts right in with the verse instead of having an instrumental intro. And then the part with Moa's vocals has a very Perfume-esque City Pop vibe. I don't really hear any more hard rock/metal influences than I hear in any pop song of the last decades.
As for controversy, I think we should apply the Iine! Test. But to the album as a whole, rather than individual songs, as it is billed as a Concept Album. The song Iine! has only 1 short section of heavy metal. It is mostly edm/J-pop/rave/whatever song with a short interlude of hip hop and then metal. But the sections are each fairly unalloyed. My take is one should not put Babymetal in a box, not even a metal one.
I really like the song. And Su- has just been crushing it on the vocals on the 4 released songs. But I have always been a push-over for a really good pop song with a great arrangement and an outstanding vocal lead performance. And it is not just a pop song, it is a J-pop song. Marty Friedman did a great explainer on why contemporary Japanese music is so much more compelling than Western music.

I like where you are coming from! I definitely wanna hear the whole album and then make a final determination, because if it's truly a concept album, then context will matter!

I am glad this song came out now! After the first 3 songs of the album I was a bit disappointed and scared, because it looked a bit too classic metal than what they got us used to!
I would say that to the "metal" part of the fandom, this is the song they like the less, but for me it's my favourite! And now I'm waithing for the last one before the release of the album :)

This song shows one thing...if they did strictly j-pop they would absolutely dominate it. There is pretty much no one in Jpop or very many in J music period who can hit it like Su does. Some sure but she's in very rarefied air vocal wise..there's just not many who can sound like she does.

Welcome back to BabyMetal's metalverse 🦊🤘🌐
Another great pop rock ballad with beautiful SuMetal vocals piercing into our hearts. Love the J-pop sound from 2000 and after, along with the nostalgic vibes mixed with the edm sound. Here's some info about this song:
"One of the discovered 10 parallel worlds is "LIGHT AND DARKNESS" and this 4th pre-release digital single “Light and Darkness” centers around this theme. Because light exists, darkness also exists.
And because darkness is present, there is also a world that shines.
During the night when light and darkness intersect, what we seek after poisoned with darkness awaits a world filled with strong love. As the door opens, is it hope or despair that awaits us? The song expresses the duality in everything and the way things are perceived and interpreted differ depending on each person’s point of view."
This was a world premiere at Makuhari Messe 2023 setlist, along with "THE LEGEND" which was the ender and probably next single, Momoko Okazaki is the third backup dancer performing here and possibly the new official member. Princess MoaMetal once again adding the backing vocals and all of them dancing with the full trio formation.
Here's the lyrics translated with some help. Thanks for sharing this. See you next time 🦊🤘🔥

    [Lyrics]
Even the reality buried in the snow of sadness
Even these hands that have been dyed red by mistakes
    Take me to oblivion
To an ideal world filled with love
    Open that door
    Come on Ah, Ah
Being poisoned, falling into a dream
A night where light and darkness seek and play together
Drowning in a sea of rhythm
Even my memories are being destroyed
This love is strong and strong
    I'm sure it won't stop
This love is strong and strong
    Never let go
Let me out. Let me out.
    let's jump out
hit by the rain of joy
Let me go. Let me go.
    Right now
    Let's dance the night away
    Take me to oblivion
Take off the mask filled with lies
    Right now
Being poisoned, falling into a dream
A night where light and darkness seek and play together
Drowning in a sea of rhythm
Even my memories are being destroyed
This love is strong and strong
    I'm sure it won't stop
This love is strong and strong
    Never let go
In the night when sorrow overflows
    Keep this love warm
    Open the door now
    Come on Ah, Ah
    Even my dreams are poisoned
A night where hope and despair seek and play together
    Ring out forever
    Even my heart is filled
This love is strong and strong
    I'm sure it won't stop
This love is strong and strong
    Never let go

I expected it to be more controversial than it has been, honestly. Not that I want controversy, but people bitched that Metal Kingdom wasn't metal enough, and reactors have been picking out metal elements from this song that is pretty objectively...Not Metal and praising them. XD I don't know if Metal Kingdom made them pull the stick out of their butts and adjust their expectations or what, but it's a good song and I'm glad to see it well received so far. 🤘🦊🤘

Actually in my opinion from what I have heard and read this is less controversial than Metal Kingdom. By the way there are at least two bootlegged videos out there which is included the LIVE audio from Divine Attack and this track and Suzuka’s vocals are amazing and sound better than this studio sound (but then again that is always the case).

Babymetal is a jpop metal group. People were actually complaining that the recent songs didn't have enough pop in them.

Don't like this at all. Already was not very happy with Metal Galaxy, but everything I heard from the new album is just plain boring. The worst thing probably was the 90s Euro Dance ramp before the first chorus. But in general, there's just nothing interesting happening during the whole song and the Euro Dance comparison is not only true for that ramp. Was there even a guitar solo? If so, I already forgot it.
Babymetal are the polar opposite to Band-Maid for me, while Band-Maid started good and got better with every album, Babymetal started really strong and got less interesting with each album. Their first album was on heavy rotation for me for quite some time, the second one also for a short time, but not as much as the first one and I can't remember I that I ever listened to Metal Galaxy all the way through even once. The upcoming one will be the first time I won't even bother to preorder a Babymetal album since I know them.
The fact that they completely anonymized the musicians with masks doesn't help either. It's almost like they really don't want you to pay attention to the band and music anymore and just focus on the girls. One of the biggest selling points for me was the mixture of the brilliant Kami Band with the girls, if you take out the Kami Band, they suddenly have to compete with other pop/rock acts and this is a battle they're going to lose, since Japan has lots of these. And to be honest, better ones as well. I'll pick Ado, Aimer or LiSA anytime over new Babymetal.
Serious question, would you take this song to musician friend and tell them, to listen to it for the musicianship? I did that for lots of the old Babymetal songs, but there's no way I'll show this to anyone for that.

Thanks for your opinion. To answer your question, I wouldn't, but not for the reasons you are probably thinking. Having only heard a studio version, I'd want to hear what it sounds like live, with the actual Kamis playing it before I made any decision. I take each song for what it is. Being that this is a concept album, it all may make more sense once the entire album is released. Thanks!
