My very FIRST sci-fi story read circa 1978, me an 11 year old: Princes of Mars. HOOKED for life. I have a 1st edition, albeit in G- condition, but a 1st non the less!!!
Thank you for explaining all the books, I didn’t know John Carter was not the main character in all the books, I’ve only read princess of Mars and Warlord of Mars . I will have to go back and read the rest of the series.
Thanks for sharing that Gary. Fascinating! So I bet you started with the warlord of mars and went back to the princess etc after you were hooked!? The things you read at 11 years old stay with you forever😊
Great covers. Great content. I think I was 10 when I read a PEANUTS book in one day and I thought that was incredible. So much fun hearing about "a young Gary" and the John Carter series.
I recently started re-reading all the Mars books in order. I was surprised how clunky the first three books were but how much better ERB got, as a writer, with each passing year. By the time Chessmen came along, the writing was one another level. Synthetic Men will always be my favorite. I just prefer the books where John Carter isn't the star.
I found this also to be true of ERB’s “Tarzan” series, which like John Carter, also debuted in 1912. The first Tarzan, while a wonderful story, is markedly clunky in its prose and lacks the narrative fluidity of his later sequels. One thing that can be said about Burroughs, he was a quick learner and honed his craft well over the years.
I think i mowed acres of grass, originally with a hand pushed mower, then with a gas powered one. It was long hot work, but i was young and strong, and besides i had nothing better to do at 10 years by old!
I really enjoyed this segment. Like another commenter here I did not know that John Carter did not figure prominently in every book of the series. Myself I only read “A Princess of Mars” preferring instead to read Burrough’s Caspak series and his stand alone novels. Nice homage to ERB with your own set of books, using Captain Kirk as inspiration for the propagandist. Oddly enough, James T. Kirk in itself was recycled-by way of James Cook, the intrepid mariner explorer of 18th century England.

Great presentation and hilarious at times.

They were all great fun for a kid.
This is a fantastic video! I deeply love this series. I really like that Ace covers on the title page trick!
BTW- I just bought a PB off Gary and it was in BETTER condition than described. He's obviously very conservative in his grading. 👍👍👍
Thanks and i hope you like the book. I try to grade accurately, not always easy though.

Hah, a young Gary was a looong time ago!

I’m sure they paid you two shiny nickels to mow those giant lawns, too 😂

The best covers are the Del Rey ones by Michael Whelan. One look at those and you're in a different world!
@@kingbolo4579 He is one of my favorite cover artists also, a terrific talent.
