Professor, I've started using the lasso as an initial entanglement and I really like it. I have noticed your proclivity to the shallow lasso and you stated why in this video. I feel like I have less control, particularly of really strong opponents if I go shallow. I am starting think some of this is due to me lacking confidence in my offense from this position? Regardless, thanks for all the high quality content you are feeding us for free. This has really helped me in my thought processes.
By stopping at a shallow lasso, you aren't fully committed to lasso guard. You are only framing a shallow lasso as Headquarters before moving into other guards which have stronger alignment of your body.
Awesome stuff as usual Jon, your videos have really helped my guard. How about a video on the opposite objective; all the different ways of attacking the seated guard?
Hey man! Will you do a video just on Romulo guard? (collar / spider) I find it really easy to get to and it's great control but I can't really find any videos online with sweeps/submissions to build on other than the triangle.
Enjoyed this video and think that its an underestimated aspect of any guard. Can you please make more videos on what grips work best for entering each guard?
Stephen Rogalla yeah I can talk about some guards like closed, x guard, 5050 and how to set those up as they are less easy to get to as an initial entanglement
bro i searched "guard" on your page. I am so overwhelmed by the amount of results, respect to your dedication and work but yo where can I find a breakdown of the actual collar guard moves on your channel?
As a 58 yo 4 stripe white belt who lacks the speed flexibility and cognitive ability to just move from one guard Position to the next against the average 25 yo professor jon Reminds me why I need to find a porch w a rocking chair and yell at kids to get off my lawn while holding a shotgun 👴🏻 However, Starting bjj at my age is a blessing and a curse but damn it I love getttn on the mat !!!
What do you do when you have lasso/spider and they just sit back; is your only option to come up for the two points? I find it hard to practice my spider/lasso game when they just lay back.
Kris Napier yeah it’s a common super annoying thing people do to disengage, you need to take the sweep or you can try to go for bolos or transition into a quick pass. But really your opponent is just giving you the sweep so I would just take it. Of course this is strategic if you don’t trust your passing then staying on bottom is what you want so you can chase submissions
So many good options. No excuses on getting some type of grip. Thank you for this.
Good stuff. Bonus points for having an assistant who's brave enough to try to bring back the "Flock of Seagulls" hair style.
Brian Jackson lol
Going to drill side shrimp correctly now. Just another thing I didn't get at my gym. Thanks again
Best video.
Can you discuss this when the opponent is on two knees.
Thx Jon.
