There a reason japanese trains are so efficient you know how much time and space it take for every to put luggage above there head instead of in a empty or in front of there feet
I was in Japan ten years ago and the Shenkansen do have reserved and non-reserved sections. Since we had the JR unlimited ticket for two weeks we choose the reserved section as we didn't want to end up without a seat. It was a smooth ride. Unfortunately the unlimited ticket didn't apply to the more upscale Shenkansen.
@@bedinskiboi in America: you get a private sleeping compartment and can check in the luggage. Not too shabby honestly, I wish my country (Sweden) still had checked luggage (resgods) on long distance trains.

Shinkansen cars have luggage racks above the seats that hold all but extra large bags. Some of the newest trains have extra luggage areas outside the passenger area.
Yep, this is a new rule after the tokyo Olympics. The priority goes to those who reserved those seats (which entitles you to use the oversized baggage section) Our entire party reserved the whole back row of 5 months in advance, cos we needed it for all 5 of our large luggages. Boarded it to find someone else's luggage in our slot. We called the conductor over and he kicked out the luggage so ours could go in, and went to find the owner to fine him 😆 yes you WILL get fined if you bring oversized luggage on board and don't have a reserved space for it. That's what people get for not doing their research in advance I guess lol
This is only for large luggage. The one stuck in between your legs is likely smaller than what the required size will be to reserve an oversized luggage spot. ~160cm for the dimensions which in most cases is anything larger than a LARGE carry-on. (About 5.1 feet in total dimensions of height+width+length)
@@jasonlee148 yes! I came back from Japan roughly 2 weeks ago and we travelled with the shinkansen quite a lot. You can and should put luggage up to ~50cm width on the overhead space. @World_of_Drama its less than 50 bucks for one large luggage (50lbs) and fastest delivery is next day, I believe. You can schedule a day you want it to arrive to your hotel or address.
If you are going to Tohoku region it can be 2 day luggage shipping. I've paid btwn $30 - $50. It depends on weight and size. The company you looking for is Yamamoto also called Black Cat.

Just got back from Japan actually, and the BEST thing you should do, is use their amazing luggage forwarding services like Yamato. You can just put your luggage at the hotel lobby, pay a little, and have it sent to your next destination. Best service ever.
Or ship from hotel to hotel via Takkyubin and don’t have to carry around your luggage at all. It’s ready for you when you check into your next hotel. It was never more than ¥2500/bag and that was long distance.
Pro tip, if the last row luggage spaces are full, there are other luggage spots between the cars BUT only book the window ones! The window seats get the lower storage compartment. If you book the aisle you get the upper storage compartment and you have to lift your oversized luggage to store it 😭😭 it was so difficult to lift mine. Lesson learned.
Great tip! For booking online I believe those are under Oversized baggage compartment car as opposed to Oversized baggage seat (last row only)…let me know if that is your experience as I’ve always gone for oversized baggage seats
As a frequent user of the bullet trains in Japan I'll try to address some misunderstandings that have occurred in the comment section. First, there is an overhead luggage storage system. If your bag is a carry on size when flying then it should fit there. Some people just keep it at there feet because there is so much space in front of your seat. For example, you could keep your luggage there and not have your feet squished. Secondly, the storage at the back is for bigger luggage that you would normally check in on a flight. That needs to be reserved in advance but you sit right in front of that seat. Literally right in front so no one will steal it as you'll notice immediately. All of what I said can be verified on the different bullet train websites.
This. You have to reserve the space for luggage larger than 160cm (sum of all dimensions), which is HUGE. Lufthansa for example has that as checked(!) luggage limit! You can put quite large luggages in the overhead compartment with no issue. Even checked bags fit there snuggly
yeah i have to put my cabin sized suitcase in my leg room every single time i take a bullet train because every time i try to lift it onto the overhead luggage rack, i fail miserably (and of course, being in a large japanese city, no one helps you with this lol)
So exciting! You can go online one month in advance at the official smart-ex Shinkansen website and search for ticket with seat type “Seat with Oversize baggage area” for your dates. It does require setting up an account. Otherwise you can book in person at a JR station. I use online since it’s easier and can get the seats in advance

One very important bit of information is that there are NO ROBBERS in Japan's trains like anywhere else in the world (especially Europe, I have heard from many friends their luggage got stolen in the train country)
Well, sorry about being pedantic but, there are robbers in Japan. It's not like it never happens. @@LilyoftheLake14 I agree there "exist" robbers in Japan, it's not like there is ZERO pickpocketing. That's why I wrote "NO ROBBERS in Japan's trains like anywhere else in the world" where they pickpocket your bag even inside Louvre's Museum (acquaintance's experience). Sorry for the confusion.
@@marianagaoka9687 Yeah, I think most of us understood that when you said "no robbers" you meant that figuratively not literally. Also, in the context of SKS, you are locked in a long haul train for an extended period of time, the gates are separate from regular trains, and the ticketing cost to just BE on the train is much higher. So for a thief to execute this is highly risky and not cost effective.
@@marianagaoka9687my country also have the oversize storage at the end of each passenger car. People use that space all the time and it's generally safe.
From experience they should have installed racks in that space to increase the capacity, that’s what we have on trains in 🇬🇧 . I remember I used to be worried that my luggage will get stolen, but in 20 years of regular use that never happened 😅
This is a newer policy since May 2020 on the Shinkansen line that goes from Tokyo through Kyoto/Osaka to Fukuoka/Kyushu area. It is required to reserve the space, best to not mistakenly take the space someone else reserved
This policy is super unfriendly, only the last roll of seat in each car could be reserved for "large" luggage, I've been in ticketing issues thus missed a train, the next is fully booked(it definitely has seats, just not the one for luggage), I had to wait for another hour. I would be super screwed had I got a flight to catch.
There is an overhead shelf that is fairly wide. Depending on the luggage weight (if you can lift it that high), a medium size luggage would fit up there too. I know. I did it a week ago.
That should be a rule workdwide lol. My mom recently went shopping at a store's outdoor gardening area to buy flowers and she walked nearby an older woman who was wearing so much crappy perfume, that she literally couldn't breathe, started coughing, and had to quickly move away. This was OUTSIDE, too!!! I can't imagine what that'd be like inside a store! 😬 These type of people always choose the WORST perfumes or colognes, too. I have borderline asthma where I need an inhaler sometimes when exercising vigorously (like prolonged running) or if i get sick. So, Whenever I walk by someone like that, whenever I walk by someone like that, I also start coughing and have trouble breathing. I have no qualms about being impolite to inconsiderate people who are also impolite, so I always cough in the direction of these kind of people and then I'll lift my shirt over my nose or cover my nose with my hand if they too come close. It's a big hint for them but they must not understand (or ignore it) because I'm definitely not the only person who coughs when they walk by. Are they thinking, "Why is everyone here so sick? Weird..." or do they just not care about other people they're near being able to breathe and live? How do they not get they smell very bad and are wearing a dangerous amount of perfume/cologne that could stop someone's breathing, like people with severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, or people with severe allergies. After Covid showed how much people threw fits about having to wear a mask for 30 minutes at the grocery store, even though that was saving lives, im really not surprised about how many people care more about their own comfort over the lives of other people. I'm sure a majority of the people who pour an entire bottle of perfume on themselves in the morning are also the same people who protested having to do something as simple as wearing a mask while inside indoor public areas areas to save people's lives, including their life and the lives of their families. Sorry about the rant there lol. It's just disheartening and angering how awful and rude some people are. 🙁 That's something the world (especially my country) should look at Japan as the example to model themselves after: how to respect and care about your fellow citizen.
Just chuck it above on the rack. It can hold a large suitcase, if you have the strength to safely lift it up. The rack is significantly more spacious than most other train racks around the world.
I did the exact thing when I visited in November and December and no one told me to put on the overhead compartment since the luggage was a bit heavy and I have an ongoing shoulder injury. And when I booked my JR pass for my visit in January and tried to reserve a space on the luggage compartment in green car, the station staff actually told me usually they will only do so for passengers with extra large luggages😂. One time I couldn’t reserve mine and in the end a male staff had to help me to put my luggage on the overhead compartment and a female staff helped me to take it down before arriving at my destination.😅I thought being in green car were not even 10% full most of time during my multiple rides had me wondered why the rules are so inflexible…
Thanks for sharing your experience, glad to hear that staff was able to help you. It’s definitely curious why the changed the policy from first come first serve to reservation, and how some staff seem to be more strict than others. Busy season is here so I suspect they will be more strict now than December…
You don't need to go to the counter and speak to a staff member to book the large luggage space. Now that the JR Pass is an electronic ticket you can reserve seats yourself by using the ticket machine for Shinkansen seat reservations/tickets. It might take you time the first time you do it, but if you can use an ATM then you can use these machines. They guide you through the process step by step, with one of the steps asking if you have large luggage. Most people don't know that the standard "large" suitcases that most Westerners travel with are actually under the 160cm requirement. Only the "huge" luggage that you rarely see actually have to pay 1000yen surcharge for not reserving a space. As you found out, the conductor is normally happy to help with luggage, either lifting it onto the rack, or even storing it elsewhere if needed. As for rules, that's Japan. Their society is based on rules.
@@envaya9838 no, it is not digital. It used to be a cardboard pass that you had to show to the staff at a manual ticket gate, but now it is a magnetic ticket that you can insert In the automatic ticket gate and also has a QR code on it so you can make seat reservations at the ticket machines.
Last time we reserved the space for large luggage, someone took out space. Had to ask them to move it, but they just moved it to the other reserved space.
If you're taking multiple large luggages across cities, can consider using takuhaibin (or similar ones) services available in major cities. Worth the cost IMHO
Be aware, that the space for the large bags must be reserved in advance. You cannot just put it there, it's only for the travellers who have reserved the seats just in front of the luggage compartment!
This applies solely to large luggage. What you should not do is place your carry-on luggage at the back since others have reserved it for their bulky luggage. When I was there, this happened to my designated luggage area; one family didn't know how to read and just put all their stuff there first. Fortunately, the seat next to me is empty.
Even most large "check-in" luggage will fit on the overhead rails. I think it's a bit rich to suggest you have no choice but to reserve the large seat; there's only 1 row per carriage.
In malaysia, for huge luggage i juz store it at the designated luggage space at the back of the coach. No one gonna steal your luggage. But in Europe dont ever try to do tht.
I have yet to do some solo traveling but even I know that it would be the very best thing for anyone who's traveling solo just to pack a backpack and that's all very light you don't need much
You can always keep it in front of you if you prefer! But if you reserve the luggage space your seat will be right next to your luggage so it’s still safe :)
What's the chances of: 1. Me going to Japan 2. Go to the exact place 3. Go on this exact train 4. Have a big luggage with me 5. Put it in front of my legs

People use that space all the time and it's generally safe.
who is out here taking large luggage onto a daily commute train? instead.. pay like $15 for drive
Of course that I will supposedly ride this specific train and have a large luggage if I go to Japan, thanks for the most useful tip in the world 🔥🔥
every time no room in luggage spare
From experience they should have installed racks in that space to increase the capacity, that’s what we have on trains in 🇬🇧 . I remember I used to be worried that my luggage will get stolen, but in 20 years of regular use that never happened 😅
Yeah I agree, except like a tourist I screwed up and did that. I don’t do that anymore.
Many of us have! I’m glad you figured things out, helps to travel more comfortably :)
I never had to reserve luggage space on the Shinkansen.
Only limited space available 😢
if you leave your luggage at those spots in Spanish trains, it would be gone in 30 minutes
There is an overhead shelf that is fairly wide. Depending on the luggage weight (if you can lift it that high), a medium size luggage would fit up there too. I know. I did it a week ago.
But then someone named ladybug will steal it
Things that u don't wanna bring In a Shinkansen train
1. A baby
2. Lousy children
3. 10 luggages
4.pets
5.lousy friends
Don't wear strong smells or listen to loud sounds in confined spaces .
@@kc3302 the JR pass is digital? I am about to buy mine but it still says it will be sent to you phyisically.
@@envaya9838 no, it is not digital. It used to be a cardboard pass that you had to show to the staff at a manual ticket gate, but now it is a magnetic ticket that you can insert In the automatic ticket gate and also has a QR code on it so you can make seat reservations at the ticket machines.
"wondered why the rules are so inflexible…" Welcome to Japan!
Not true, you can put your luggage above you, there is enough space for it. I went in the bullet train before.
You have to reserved the right seat or you may be charged for about 30 usd for your luggage(like over 28 inch
Last time we reserved the space for large luggage, someone took out space. Had to ask them to move it, but they just moved it to the other reserved space.
India be like:our train has luggage space in under of train seat
Luggage compartments were invented in 1980
People in 1979:
In Japan you can ship your luggage by land while you travel on your train.
Such a game changer!! Made my recent trip so much easier to ship my luggage from hotels and to the airport.
In america your luggage will be gone in a minute
*this is a new policy on the Tokaido Shinkansen, it does not apply to Tohoku or Kanazawa
Great idea ❤
You can stow it on the overhead luggage compartments.
Japan Is a Different Culture IT Would Be a Good Idea To Have a Baggage Compartment For The Tourists And The Locals 😊
If you're taking multiple large luggages across cities, can consider using takuhaibin (or similar ones) services available in major cities. Worth the cost IMHO
Yes we can put the luggage at the reserve but, as foreigners visiting Japan, i'd still prefer to hold on to my belongings no matter what.
Tried this on an Amtrak train between New York and DC. My luggage is now in Chicago I think.
Put it on the over headrail I had a big suitcase and it fitting
Similar with HSR in china, but there's luggage racks as well and you don't need to reserve
There's a luggage rack at the back of every car train...
umm you can do this. and reserving is for if there is room for it.
Intercity trains in my country usually all have space for large luggage in all cars, typically close to the doors
In other countries " When your luggage compartment is your lap"😅😅😅
Even most large "check-in" luggage will fit on the overhead rails. I think it's a bit rich to suggest you have no choice but to reserve the large seat; there's only 1 row per carriage.
Thanks for the warning
That's not a NEVER. Thats just a stupid thing for people to not gave to deal with.
This train reminds me of Shinkansen 0 something like that.
Bibf bap bom bap outsmarted
In malaysia, for huge luggage i juz store it at the designated luggage space at the back of the coach. No one gonna steal your luggage. But in Europe dont ever try to do tht.
I have yet to do some solo traveling but even I know that it would be the very best thing for anyone who's traveling solo just to pack a backpack and that's all very light you don't need much
japan has like 1001 rules on what NOT to do , its insane ...i understand now why so many ppl off themselves ....i would too...
That's if you can reserve it lol
it makes me feel safe, and its comfy for me :) but if i go to japan, ill remember that
You can always keep it in front of you if you prefer! But if you reserve the luggage space your seat will be right next to your luggage so it’s still safe :)
I want my legs stuck like that who are you to tell me never 😂😂😂😂
What's the chances of:
1. Me going to Japan
2. Go to the exact place
3. Go on this exact train
4. Have a big luggage with me
5. Put it in front of my legs
Not easy, its need booking process on that luggage spaces. Yes free, but not always available and you shold 3 row maximum from reserve locations
Do you have to reserve luggage for the Tohoku line? I can't seem to find it anywhere of you do.
The Tohoku Shinkansen does not have this service. Instead, you can use the free luggage-space in the guestrooms or the end sections near the door.
Key word: reserve. Don't be an ass and use it without paying.
Is 1st come 1st basis sometimes there is no space for the large luggage
One time my wife and I were on a local train where seats faced each other, 2 snotty Japanese school girls occupied 2 seats each with their backpacks and always refused to take their bags off to allow others to sit until I said, "remove your f___king bags."
it’s the opposite in england
" Help me step luggage I'm stuck"😭
Thanks for information because at japan I m gonna done this
I’m glad it helped! Hope you have a great time!
There is an overhead compartment 😅
