My guest expert this week is Ivor Cummins.
Ivor Cummins has rapidly become one of the world's experts on calcification scanning. Ivor Cummins BE(Chem) CEng MIEI PMP and a Biochemical Engineering degree. He has recently presented at the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) and also at the Irish National Institute of Preventative Cardiology (NIPC) annual conferences.

    Today we discuss:
    What is a calcium scan?
What is a calcium score and calcification?
Why do some people have no risk factors yet have heart disease?
Who is suggested to have a calcium scan?
    What do the scores indicate?
Lifestyle modifications to prevent the root cause.
    Risk vs benefits. Who decides?

I've had my CAC yesterday, score 70 and after listening to this video, made an informed decision to tell my doctor to delay starting statins until my next test (in 2yrs) and if that score is 100, then I'll go on ongoing meds but not now. I'll continue with further changes to nutrition, daily walks, and ocean swimming. Thanks so much for the reassurance.

Excellent discussion. As much as it pains me to disagree with Ivor, I think he overstates the value of serial CIMT while somewhat understating the value of serial calcium imaging. He also gives statin therapy a bit too much credibility. Although statins have a marginal value and should be used in a small subset of patients with unstable plaque, the current general use of statins is wrong and needs to be reviewed outside of the economic lense that is responsible for its current magnification. In addition, there are other therapies, e.g. dental care, antioxidant foods, aged garlic extract, and others that have good data regarding reduction in heart attack risk and reduction of plaque in the arteries.

To this day, Mayo Clinic discourages the CT scan and CAC score. I'm a Mayo patient, had PVC's accompanied by chest pain for several years, several Mayo cardiologists just sort of blew my symptoms off, then I had a heart attack at 56. Never once had Mayo suggested a scan for me. NIne months after that I got a scan and CACS. Had to pay cash, Mayo cardiologist tried to talk me out of the scan. Of course, I got a bad score. I have embarked on keto diet, and cheated not a single time in 15 months. Zero grain ever, zero veg oil ever, etc. I hadn't been fat, but I lost some weight all out of my abdomen - I think I'd been a TOFI. Planning to have a 2-year follow-up scan and CAC score to see which direction my score is headed. Mayo was zero help, in fact worse than that. For some reason, they simply would not help me - till I arrived at the cath lab after the $30k+ 5am helicopter ride. Had to figure this all out on my own here on youtube, thanks to the likes of Ivor Cummins.

I needed to hear this. My doc tried to put me on a statin due to my LDL was 150 and I have HTN. I said no and researched the calcium artery scan. I scan was a big fat ZERO!!! I think I will find another doctor. Also...YOU can pay for the scan yourself. Get a good doc or cardiologist to order it and once it goes thru insurance which they usually wont pay...you will pay around $150. I paid $115. Well worth it.

My question is: is there a good place to go for other vitamins that I'm taking (Vitamin A, D3, C, Zinc, Magnesium, etc.) where the ingredients are more centric to the keto-genic diet? In the current bottles that I have, I'm seeing the ingredients referencing Soybean oil, corn oil, vegetable glycerin which are in brands such as 'Natures Bounty' or 'Basics'.

I am a male 52 never smoked but a bit of a worrying nature and have a family history of heart disease but I’ve looked after myself all my life keeping fit and eating a vary clean healthy diet I’ve done everything right plus my bmi is spot on but I got a calcium score of 153 okay it’s not off the rails but Not what I was excepting the dr says I should be on a low dose of statins, ,
My male friend 57 years old a smoker and heavy drinker never worry’s about anything, he as a fatty liver but as no family history of heart disease but he eats junk all the time, told me he hates fruit and vegetables but loves cakes plus he never moves from his sofa most of his food is from uber eats and he’s clinically obese the other day told me his calcium score was a big fat zero! ...

@@gregbell4505 Excellent. You're throwing everything at it.
Have you come across the videos of Arthur Agatston? He's one of the co-inventors of the CAC scan and he's got videos here on YT. One of his videos is actually an interview with Ivor Cummins. I highly recommend them, especially for someone as motivated as you are.
After watching his videos I requested the full data set (images) from the two CAC scans I've had so far and was able to understand my situation even better. IDK if its the same in Australia, but in USA we have a right to access all of our medical records, so I just filled out the request and 3 weeks later I got a CD with all the images in my mailbox.
PS: All we ever hear about is the total score, but Agatston's videos will show you that there is much more useful information to be gleaned from the images, especially when you get multiple scans.
