I was fortunate to work for Buck and his sons at one of his country radio stations in Phoenix. We had him on our radio show a couple of times. He was always fun and cared about his employees. The only thing you left out was Buck's friendship with Dwight Yoakam that revived his career in the late 80's.

Don't you think that Don Rich was also a highly underrated backup vocalist? I love his harmonies, sophisticated but never out of place, always strengthening the lead. And great intonation, as the Cargegie album shows.

When my mom died in Bakersfield Buck sang me her favorite song at the Crystal Palace. His mom and my grandmother were friends Buck has done a lot for Bakersfield. He will always have a special place in my heart ❤️
I owe my life to Buck as I "Hated" him so much growing up as a kid in the 70's that I worked liked crazy to get an education and get out of B-field. I ran into him one night and he asked me how life was going etc. and he told me "remember you will always be from B-field, it's not Hee Haw, and it's not all that Bad." I realized then that I actually hated B-field and he knew it all the time. A tear came to my eye when I heard that he had passed away... I wish I would have told him "Thank You" in the old grocery store on N. Chester so may years ago.

An employee told him we were in the audience and between songs he turned the stage spotlight on me and told everyone I was a former employer!!! That was a special night. Don Rich is way overdue to be inducted into the CMA Hall of Fame as a studio and sideman.
Cantu is the only remaining survivor of one of the greatest rock-a-billy bands that ever performed. I hear that he is still in the business around Nashville, and I would love to go up and hang around him for a day. God bless the memory of the original Buckaroos…Buck, Don, Doyle, Tom…and the lone survivor, Willie.
Willi used to be a usual at the Wheel, couple other venues in downtown Nashville ..spoke with him many a times, also spent time with Doyle uf at his store, nice guy full of fun...man all the stories he told me...wow, fun life they had. I really mis Tom, gentlemen they were, one of kind Steel player ....

Back in 1990 I became a professional drummer in a country rock band. I had always been a fan of Buck and The Buckaroos growing up. In 1995 I was pressed into service one night to help with the singing duties. The first song I ever sang as a professional was Bucks “Loves Gonna Live Here”. I’m 68 now and still singing Buck songs as well as many other of the country stars hits from days gone by. Buck has influenced my life for many years musically and I will always be fond of that man and his music! ❤️🇺🇸
I was a big fan of Don Ritch and Buck Owens, growing up in Oklahoma in The 60s and 70s, I know your dad and don had a great life playing music and sharing the best times together.
Sad to hear and see all the changes at the ranch north of Bakersfield. My aunt and uncle live on the hill to the south that over looks it. Buck would always wave to my uncle when he’d pass him. One of my favorite memories is seeing him. ❤
This video brings back lots of happy memories of the mid 1960s back then i had two LP one of Hank Williams and one of Buck Owens , I played them until the groves went dead , Happy times back then and not a care in the world , Today / old and grey just to make my life complete . i
I was amazed to hear that the Beatles were huge fans of Owens and Ringo Starr did a video version of Act Naturally with him. I grew up on this music on Glen Campbell’s Good Time Hour and Hee Haw. When I watch these old videos it brings me back to a time when my loved ones were still living and unfortunately many of the performers on these shows are not here anymore either. It’s nice to go back🙏🏻👍🏻
My stepdad's sister Phyllis was married to Buck Owens. I met Buck twice & he was a really nice man. I had a Buck Owens watch. We had a clock that was made out of his record Tiger by The Tail. I still have wallet that my aunt gave me that was his. RIP
Such a Bakersfield thing, right? My cousin went out with Merle Haggard's son, but we're all rockers, so my whole family has been involved with the bands that became KORN. But you tell people from outside of Bako and they think you're name-dropping. You're like, nah. It's just Bakersfield.
First saw Buck at the Palomino Lounge in Tacoma in the late 50's. I was too young to get in so had borrowed a friends duplicate ID card to get in. On Sat nite he played at Breseman's Dance Hall in Spanaway. Went over there from Ft Lewis every chance I could. Years later I was driving up Hwy 99 in Bakersfield and saw the Crystal Palace sign along the highway. I stopped in and found that he played there on Friday and Sat nites. I made it a point to schedule my Calif trips around those days so I could stop in and hear him sing.
I remember seeing the two of them live in the early 70s (maybe ‘72- ‘73ish) at the Cow Palace in California. I was a young teenager then and I thought they were good but at that time I was more interested in seeing the Beach Boy, whom I also saw there too. Later I became more interested in Buck’s songs and appreciated his “sound” much more. Hee Haw helped in about 1970 (his part and Roy’s were the only parts I enjoyed) and when Dwight Yoakam hit the scene, his references to Buck and his duet also helped keep the interest alive too! Miss hearing his music! RIP
i was 13 when i got my first guitar and buckaroo was the first song i learned. back then it was hard to find people of my age to play country music . everyone wanted to play rock, so did i !! when suggested that we diversify and play both, 1 guy asked me what was diversify i knew it was a lost cause. i still love you buck and still listen to your music. RIP !!
Buck Was an enormous talent who won me over in my early 20s in the late 1980s. I heard him say once he regretted doing Hee Haw because he knew it took him away from the music and his audience that he truly loved.
I've always liked Buck Owens Roy Clark Hank Williams and all those I can't mention ! Country Western has always had a place in my heart. Yes I do miss that Grand Ole Opry sounding music ! Thanks again Facts Vers you did it again.
I listened to Bucks music at a bar in ocean city md in the mid 1964. I went home to NJ I was shocked to see Buck doing a concert in Newark Nj. He had a Huge bus and presume he drove across the country. It was a great concert even though he was not well known
I love Buck & his Buckaroos, but Buck ( along with Marty Robbins ) was my Father's absolute favorite! We were traveling from our home in Southern California to Bakersfield on that sad day. We were in the middle of the Mojave desert when the DJ actually cut into a song to tell us Don Rich had been killed. Dad was visibly shaken & had to pull over, get out & walk around for a few minutes to compose himself. I was only 13 & really didn't understand why Pop was so struck by the news, but 3yrs later ( and 3yrs older ) came the news that my musical hero Elvis Presley had died & then I totally understood how Dad felt, had I been driving that dark August day, I would have had to pull over too 😢 Buck lost so much with DR's death, most of all he lost his musical soulmate 🙏 RIP Buck, Don & Pop 🙏 Btw, my favorite Buck tune, "Beware of a tall dark stranger" 😉👍

When I was 14-15, the Buck Owens show ran from 12:00-1:00pm and I’d run home at lunch to watch it. I was fascinated by the banter that went on between Buck, his band mates and especially with Don Ulrich. It just looked like they were having so much fun and you could tell from the laughter and giggling that there were a lot of private jokes going on between them. I always thought that was so cool. Five years later, I ended up playing music and singing for a living doing pretty much the same thing with my band mates. Buck Owens and Don Ulrich influenced me a great deal.
Having worked for Buck at one of his country radio stations I knew him and his sons well. He treated his employees great. Don Rich is way overdue for induction into the CMA Hall of fame.
@@hillbillydeluxe27 Buck would come visit us in Phoenix at the radio station about once a year. He'd come in and hang out with his employees. His son Michael Owens was our GM. Son Buddy Owens our music director. It was a special time in broadcasting and our station was number one for many years and earned many big awards from the CMA and the ACM and a couple of Marconi radio awards. Buck was just a fun laid back guy when I knew him. In fact, I wrote a book about the radio station he owned in Phoenix for 30 years. He was quite the businessman too. When in Phoenix he'd go play golf or tennis with his sons. I've been in country radio now for 50 years and the 8 years I spent working for BUCK were the best!
I grew up in Bakersfield, knew all this but love your vids, in oildale Buck and Merle both played the Blackboard, for years Buck lived on Panarama street overlooking the bluff towards Oildale, and Merle built a home towards Kern river. All of their kids went to FOOTHILL H,S. Buck bought a ranch for his folks off of Edison H.W.Y. Thank you
There was a spread on Merle Haggard in LIFE Magazine back around 1970. It showed his ranch home by the Kern River. They also showed Merle driving a 1953 Ford 2-door Customline Sedan, which he mounted on train wheels and drove on tracks somewhere around his Kern River home. If anyone knows whatever happened to that car, I sure would love to hear about it!
I had no idea. I grew up watching all those people. My brother loved Haggard. I hated all of it and was a rock n roller. Lol. Now I find myself trying to learn guitar and playing/listening to country music. Wow. The old stuff not the modern country which I think is not country at all.
I remember Don Rich. You could tell that Buck wasn't the same after Don's death. They played off of one another. It's another one of those, "what did weiss out on" type of things that no one really will ever know the answer to. The only part that was not talked about was his (Buck's) collaboration with Dwight Yoakam. Dwight really looked up to Buck growing up and had the chance to do some collaberting with Buck, and had a song that went high on the charts in "Streets of Bakersfield".
As a kid watching hee haw Buck and Roy were great together. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I have always been a rock n roll guy but will always have a fondness for Buck and Roy.
I saw Buck and the band in Belfast and during the show Don kept adjusting his tuning and at one point Buck turned to him and in good humour said to him "when you get that guitar in tune will you weld it." They absolutely brilliant.
I was brought up with the Buck Owns and the Merle Haggard sound, my dad played in a band with lead and rhythm Olympic white teles in the 70's, where 'country and western' were the songs to be played in the clubs, I have watch numerous documentaries on Buck and Merle so I found a great number of facts about them. Yes I knew Merle married Bonnie. Buck was a long time friend of my family. Him and my brother Bill Lansdown got together many summers at the Bakersfield fair grounds and played music. Buck tried over and over many times to get my brother to go into Bucks studio and record an album. My brother didn't want to be under any ones thumb to travel the country. Before Buck became famous he was a macanic, he put a new. Mother in my mother's car. In the 70s me and Buck were phone pals. He was an awesome man.

After Don Rich passed away Buck never sounded as happy and as good as when he performed with Don. Then, purely by chance, I watched a show on TV and Buck sang Act Naturally with Vince Gill. It was great. Vince was the best sound next to Buck since Don Rich. Vince went on to honor Buck with an album. Buck was great but with Don Rich (Vince Gill) he was the greatest!!!!
A former boss of mine was neighbors with Buck Owens in Patterson, CA. She loved to tell her stories and one was that he thought her daughter was so beautiful he wanted to put her on TV. Later on when my boss was retiring I met her daughter at a lunch in her mom's honor and she asked about what kind of stories she told. I ribbed her and mentioned that she told me "..I hear Buck Owens wanted you to be a 'Hee Haw Honey'!" She just groaned!! Haha!
It is largely believed that Buck Owens hit song “Tall, Dark Stranger” is a reference to Merle Haggard marrying his wife, Bonnie Owens! It is my opinion the Buck Owens was one of the greatest country music artist of the 20th century! “Made in Japan” will always be my favorite Buck Owens song!
Knowing Buck and his sons when I worked at one of his country radio stations--Buck had said his mother always told him as a young boy to "look out for a TALL DARK STRANGER coming around! That was his inspiration for writing that song. Buck and Bonnie had been divorced since the mid or later fifties and remained friends for their son's sake. Haggard did not marry Bonnie until about 1965 and they divorced around 1978. Bonnie Owens continued to sing background vocals and harmony on Haggard songs. That is Bonnie you hear in the background on many of Merles hit records.
I remember being a kid and watching HeeHaw at my grandparents home whenever it came on. Remember a bunch of people just popping up in a cornfield saying nonsensical things and a blonde chick with the world's whitest teeth rolling around on the ground talking to a hound dog. It wasn't until my late teens and I took an interest in guitar that I realized what amazing musicians both Owens and Clark were.
I was always a big fan of Buck Owens. Since I play the guitar 🎸 to,I not only learned songs from George jones,and,Sonny James,I learned a lot of songs from Buck Owens.
The relationship between Buck and Don had been incredibly close. It is hard to say for sure but I have a feeling that if Don had not died, Buck would have remained in much better health and perhaps he would still be picking and kicking today.
One of my favorite songs called walk the streets of Bakersfield by Dwight Yoakam and I think that’s a great song it has that wonderful Bakersfield sound which also uses one of my favorite instruments which is the accordion.

It is true that Buck "over-dubbed" his voice on many early singles essentially singing with himself. It was a common practice for performers. Later Don Rich recorded the harmonies and in concert Don also harmonized with Buck.
I like that Buck recorded Act Naturally with Ringo Starr who recorded it while in The Beatles back in the 60's. I think Made In Japan or Big In Vegas are at the top of my favorites list!! 🎸🎸🎸
Buck suffered some deep depression after Don's death. He had preached to all his band members about the dangers of riding motorcycles. The story goes that Don was actually going to take his car out to meet his family for vacation on the coast near the ocean but that it would not start. So, he took his "chopper" motorcycle instead and lost control on the Pacific Coast highway hitting a highway divider head-on. Buck did carry on but retired the first time from the road in 1980. He still did HEE HAW for a few years and left that show by 1986. It was Dwight Yoakam who lured him out of retirement in 1988 for Streets of Bakersfield. He recorded 3 more albums for Capitol records and retired a second time in 1991. He opened his Crystal Palace nightclub and museum in Bakersfield by 1996. I visited with him at the club in 1999. Seven years later he died on the 40th Anniversary of the Carnegie Hall concert on March 25th 2006. I went to his funeral. Over 2000 people attended. You can find the funeral on youtube.

I had the good fortune to be a band member of the Rice Paddy Daddies country and western band in the 1st cav area of Korea in 1959, the band consisted of Carlos Gentry ,front man, Don Rich Guitar and vocals, earl Wisor Fiddle, me Richard Hyatt bass,and vocals, harmony with don , on occasion . WE were all in the Army at the time and played Enlisted Clubs mostly, but occasionally we did GIGS in a Korean Dance hall named Ari Dong Club in pobwonne, near ARMY RC 1. I am 87 as of today, and do not remember what units all the band me,bers were I. But I was in the 15 the 15th Medical Battalion, I think Don may have been with the 23 rd transportation, Carlos was with Special Services, Entertainment, Earl I do not recall what unit he was with. 10 years later I was again assigned to duty in KOREA, I was told by my house boy, Schoshie Kim, that the ARi Dong club had been torn down peace by peace and moved south about 8 miles to another village and reconstructed to look exactly 😊😮 like it’s former look in POBWONNE, they did this manually, carrying all the materials south on the BACK. IN what we GI,s called a Korean Duce and a half.
Don Rich was just a teenager when Buck met him in the Tacoma, Washington area in 1958. To my knowledge he never served in Korea or in the Army? Don later joined Buck in 1960 as the video implies and died in the motorcycle accident in 1974, he was only 32 years old then. I worked for Buck and his sons at his country radio station in Phoenix in the 80's. I never met Don but am close with the family. Don Rich was never in the Army.
Buck Owens was a studio musician in California beginning in 51. If you know who Tommy Collins was , listen to his early recordings, Buck was his guitar player.
I was under the impression there was no enmity between Buck and Merle regarding Bonnie. Buck and Bonnie’s marriage ended a couple years before due to Buck’s philandering. Merle began courting her a year or so after the divorce was finalized. Buck’s eldest son said that Melre was a good step-dad to Bucks and Bonnie’s children. I think there was also a quote from Buck where he said something to the effect that he would rather Merle marry Bonnie rather than someone he didn’t know.
Buck Owens/Buckaroos at the White House played a party for the Prez....tidbit...the Buckaroos were in all white suits, Doyle (bassman) told me that Willi Cantu (drummer) I personally met all of them, they got into a " cherry tomato fight at the Salad bar!!" Doyle tells me I can guress what the white suits looked like after that....but played well after that....funny stuff ...by the way ...greatest steel player Tom...rip buddy
Buck rented a house owned by my father that was next door to our house in algona Washington about 10 miles from Tacoma. I was very young but I have a distinct memory of playing with bucks son johnny same name as mine and same age. We drug some big rocks into bucks house and he flipped out.
I've seem videos of Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens performing. She helped get Merle his start in the music business. When she was in a nursing home, he visited her, but she did not recognize him. So sad.
You didn’t talk about Buck’s time on Heehaw with the equality talented Roy Clark and the rest of the cast. But probably when his band member and friend passed, that was the toughest time to go through. RIP Mr. Owens

Don died before I was even born, but I grew up on their music. As a kid when ever we had a car ride I had my dad put on the Carnegie Halll concert. It's a disgrace Don isn't in the country music hall of fame and I refuse to take that organization serious because of that.

Yes as to Merle marrying Bonnie. On his early years Buck had played guitar in Tommy Collins's band too. Do a history on Tommy . Merle wrote and recorded the song "Leonard," which was about Tommy Collins.
Never knew Merle Haggard married Buck Owens ex-wife til now. Buck Owens was a great singer...never really cared to much for Merle Haggard. Merle was too "twangy" for my musical taste. 🙏 RIP BUCK OWENS 🙏

Back in 1990 I became a professional drummer in a country rock band. I had always been a fan of Buck and The Buckaroos growing up. In 1995 I was pressed into service one night to help with the singing duties. The first song I ever sang as a professional was Bucks “Loves Gonna Live Here”.
I’m 68 now and still singing Buck songs as well as many other of the country stars hits from days gone by.
Buck has influenced my life for many years musically and I will always be fond of that man and his music! ❤️🇺🇸

I was a big fan of Don Ritch and Buck Owens, growing up in Oklahoma in The 60s and 70s, I know your dad and don had a great life playing music and sharing the best times together.

Sad to hear and see all the changes at the ranch north of Bakersfield. My aunt and uncle live on the hill to the south that over looks it. Buck would always wave to my uncle when he’d pass him. One of my favorite memories is seeing him. ❤

I was amazed to hear that the Beatles were huge fans of Owens and Ringo Starr did a video version of Act Naturally with him. I grew up on this music on Glen Campbell’s Good Time Hour and Hee Haw. When I watch these old videos it brings me back to a time when my loved ones were still living and unfortunately many of the performers on these shows are not here anymore either. It’s nice to go back🙏🏻👍🏻
My stepdad's sister Phyllis was married to Buck Owens.
I met Buck twice & he was a really nice man. I had a Buck Owens watch.
We had a clock that was made out of his record Tiger by The Tail.

Such a Bakersfield thing, right? My cousin went out with Merle Haggard's son, but we're all rockers, so my whole family has been involved with the bands that became KORN. But you tell people from outside of Bako and they think you're name-dropping. You're like, nah. It's just Bakersfield.
First saw Buck at the Palomino Lounge in Tacoma in the late 50's. I was too young to get in so had borrowed a friends duplicate ID card to get in. On Sat nite he played at Breseman's Dance Hall in Spanaway. Went over there from Ft Lewis every chance I could. Years later I was driving up Hwy 99 in Bakersfield and saw the Crystal Palace sign along the highway. I stopped in and found that he played there on Friday and Sat nites. I made it a point to schedule my Calif trips around those days so I could stop in and hear him sing.
I remember seeing the two of them live in the early 70s (maybe ‘72- ‘73ish) at the Cow Palace in California. I was a young teenager then and I thought they were good but at that time I was more interested in seeing the Beach Boy, whom I also saw there too. Later I became more interested in Buck’s songs and appreciated his “sound” much more. Hee Haw helped in about 1970 (his part and Roy’s were the only parts I enjoyed) and when Dwight Yoakam hit the scene, his references to Buck and his duet also helped keep the interest alive too!

i was 13 when i got my first guitar and buckaroo was the first song i learned. back then it was hard to find people of my age to play country music . everyone wanted to play rock, so did i !! when suggested that we diversify and play both, 1 guy asked me what was diversify i knew it was a lost cause. i still love you buck and still listen to your music. RIP !!
Buck Was an enormous talent who won me over in my early 20s in the late 1980s. I heard him say once he regretted doing Hee Haw because he knew it took him away from the music and his audience that he truly loved.
I've always liked Buck Owens Roy Clark Hank Williams and all those I can't mention ! Country Western has always had a place in my heart. Yes I do miss that Grand Ole Opry sounding music ! Thanks again Facts Vers you did it again.

I listened to Bucks music at a bar in ocean city md in the mid 1964. I went home to NJ I was shocked to see Buck doing a concert in Newark Nj. He had a Huge bus and presume he drove across the country. It was a great concert even though he was not well known

We were traveling from our home in Southern California to Bakersfield on that sad day. We were in the middle of the Mojave desert when the DJ actually cut into a song to tell us Don Rich had been killed. Dad was visibly shaken & had to pull over, get out & walk around for a few minutes to compose himself. I was only 13 & really didn't understand why Pop was so struck by the news, but 3yrs later ( and 3yrs older ) came the news that my musical hero Elvis Presley had died & then I totally understood how Dad felt, had I been driving that dark August day, I would have had to pull over too 😢 Buck lost so much with DR's death, most of all he lost his musical soulmate 🙏 RIP Buck, Don & Pop 🙏

I was fortunate to work for Buck and his sons at a country radio station he owned in Phoenix for several years. He was one of a kind. I never met Don but he was always smilin' and contributed so much to his sound. Don Rich is way overdue to be inducted into the CMA Hall of fame in a sideman, musician category.

When I was 14-15, the Buck Owens show ran from 12:00-1:00pm and I’d run home at lunch to watch it. I was fascinated by the banter that went on between Buck, his band mates and especially with Don Ulrich. It just looked like they were having so much fun and you could tell from the laughter and giggling that there were a lot of private jokes going on between them. I always thought that was so cool. Five years later, I ended up playing music and singing for a living doing pretty much the same thing with my band mates. Buck Owens and Don Ulrich influenced me a great deal.
Having worked for Buck at one of his country radio stations I knew him and his sons well. He treated his employees great. Don Rich is way overdue for induction into the CMA Hall of fame.

@@hillbillydeluxe27 Buck would come visit us in Phoenix at the radio station about once a year. He'd come in and hang out with his employees. His son Michael Owens was our GM. Son Buddy Owens our music director. It was a special time in broadcasting and our station was number one for many years and earned many big awards from the CMA and the ACM and a couple of Marconi radio awards. Buck was just a fun laid back guy when I knew him. In fact, I wrote a book about the radio station he owned in Phoenix for 30 years. He was quite the businessman too. When in Phoenix he'd go play golf or tennis with his sons. I've been in country radio now for 50 years and the 8 years I spent working for BUCK were the best!
I grew up in Bakersfield, knew all this but love your vids, in oildale Buck and Merle both played the Blackboard, for years Buck lived on Panarama street overlooking the bluff towards Oildale, and Merle built a home towards Kern river. All of their kids went to FOOTHILL H,S. Buck bought a ranch for his folks off of Edison H.W.Y. Thank you

There was a spread on Merle Haggard in LIFE Magazine back around 1970. It showed his ranch home by the Kern River. They also showed Merle driving a 1953 Ford 2-door Customline Sedan, which he mounted on train wheels and drove on tracks somewhere around his Kern River home. If anyone knows whatever happened to that car, I sure would love to hear about it!
I had no idea. I grew up watching all those people. My brother loved Haggard. I hated all of it and was a rock n roller. Lol. Now I find myself trying to learn guitar and playing/listening to country music. Wow. The old stuff not the modern country which I think is not country at all.
I remember Don Rich. You could tell that Buck wasn't the same after Don's death. They played off of one another. It's another one of those, "what did weiss out on" type of things that no one really will ever know the answer to. The only part that was not talked about was his (Buck's) collaboration with Dwight Yoakam. Dwight really looked up to Buck growing up and had the chance to do some collaberting with Buck, and had a song that went high on the charts in "Streets of Bakersfield".

As a kid watching hee haw Buck and Roy were great together. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I have always been a rock n roll guy but will always have a fondness for Buck and Roy.
I saw Buck and the band in Belfast and during the show Don kept adjusting his tuning and at one point Buck turned to him and in good humour said to him "when you get that guitar in tune will you weld it." They absolutely brilliant.
I was brought up with the Buck Owns and the Merle Haggard sound, my dad played in a band with lead and rhythm Olympic white teles in the 70's, where 'country and western' were the songs to be played in the clubs, I have watch numerous documentaries on Buck and Merle so I found a great number of facts about them. RIP Merle, Buck, Don and Bonnie 🏴

Yes I knew Merle married Bonnie. Buck was a long time friend of my family. Him and my brother Bill Lansdown got together many summers at the Bakersfield fair grounds and played music. Buck tried over and over many times to get my brother to go into Bucks studio and record an album. My brother didn't want to be under any ones thumb to travel the country. Before Buck became famous he was a macanic, he put a new. Mother in my mother's car. In the 70s me and Buck were phone pals. He was an awesome man.

After Don Rich passed away Buck never sounded as happy and as good as when he performed with Don. Then, purely by chance, I watched a show on TV and Buck sang Act Naturally with Vince Gill. It was great. Vince was the best sound next to Buck since Don Rich. Vince went on to honor Buck with an album. Buck was great but with Don Rich (Vince Gill) he was the greatest!!!!

A former boss of mine was neighbors with Buck Owens in Patterson, CA. She loved to tell her stories and one was that he thought her daughter was so beautiful he wanted to put her on TV. Later on when my boss was retiring I met her daughter at a lunch in her mom's honor and she asked about what kind of stories she told. I ribbed her and mentioned that she told me "..I hear Buck Owens wanted you to be a 'Hee Haw Honey'!" She just groaned!! Haha!

It is largely believed that Buck Owens hit song “Tall, Dark Stranger” is a reference to Merle Haggard marrying his wife, Bonnie Owens! It is my opinion the Buck Owens was one of the greatest country music artist of the 20th century! “Made in Japan” will always be my favorite Buck Owens song!
Knowing Buck and his sons when I worked at one of his country radio stations--Buck had said his mother always told him as a young boy to "look out for a TALL DARK STRANGER coming around! That was his inspiration for writing that song. Buck and Bonnie had been divorced since the mid or later fifties and remained friends for their son's sake. Haggard did not marry Bonnie until about 1965 and they divorced around 1978. Bonnie Owens continued to sing background vocals and harmony on Haggard songs. That is Bonnie you hear in the background on many of Merles hit records.
I remember being a kid and watching HeeHaw at my grandparents home whenever it came on. Remember a bunch of people just popping up in a cornfield saying nonsensical things and a blonde chick with the world's whitest teeth rolling around on the ground talking to a hound dog. It wasn't until my late teens and I took an interest in guitar that I realized what amazing musicians both Owens and Clark were.
I was always a big fan of Buck Owens. Since I play the guitar 🎸 to,I not only learned songs from George jones,and,Sonny James,I learned a lot of songs from Buck Owens.

The relationship between Buck and Don had been incredibly close. It is hard to say for sure but I have a feeling that if Don had not died, Buck would have remained in much better health and perhaps he would still be picking and kicking today.

One of my favorite songs called walk the streets of Bakersfield by Dwight Yoakam and I think that’s a great song it has that wonderful Bakersfield sound which also uses one of my favorite instruments which is the accordion.

It is true that Buck "over-dubbed" his voice on many early singles essentially singing with himself. It was a common practice for performers. Later Don Rich recorded the harmonies and in concert Don also harmonized with Buck.
My dad cried that day. He said, buck Owens will never be the same.

Buck suffered some deep depression after Don's death. He had preached to all his band members about the dangers of riding motorcycles. The story goes that Don was actually going to take his car out to meet his family for vacation on the coast near the ocean but that it would not start. So, he took his "chopper" motorcycle instead and lost control on the Pacific Coast highway hitting a highway divider head-on. Buck did carry on but retired the first time from the road in 1980. He still did HEE HAW for a few years and left that show by 1986. It was Dwight Yoakam who lured him out of retirement in 1988 for Streets of Bakersfield. He recorded 3 more albums for Capitol records and retired a second time in 1991. He opened his Crystal Palace nightclub and museum in Bakersfield by 1996. I visited with him at the club in 1999. Seven years later he died on the 40th Anniversary of the Carnegie Hall concert on March 25th 2006. I went to his funeral. Over 2000 people attended. You can find the funeral on youtube.

Don Rich’s hometown is actually Tumwater, Washington, which borders Olympia.

I had the good fortune to be a band member of the Rice Paddy Daddies country and western band in the 1st cav area of Korea in 1959, the band consisted of Carlos Gentry ,front man, Don Rich Guitar and vocals, earl Wisor Fiddle, me Richard Hyatt bass,and vocals, harmony with don , on occasion . WE were all in the Army at the time and played Enlisted Clubs mostly, but occasionally we did GIGS in a Korean Dance hall named Ari Dong Club in pobwonne, near ARMY RC 1. I am 87 as of today, and do not remember what units all the band me,bers were I. But I was in the 15 the 15th Medical Battalion, I think Don may have been with the 23 rd transportation, Carlos was with Special Services, Entertainment, Earl I do not recall what unit he was with. I later years learned Don was killed in a Motor Cycle accident. That was a shame. rip to any and all who are no longer with us.

10 years later I was again assigned to duty in KOREA, I was told by my house boy, Schoshie Kim, that the ARi Dong club had been torn down peace by peace and moved south about 8 miles to another village and reconstructed to look exactly

Don Rich was just a teenager when Buck met him in the Tacoma, Washington area in 1958. To my knowledge he never served in Korea or in the Army? Don later joined Buck in 1960 as the video implies and died in the motorcycle accident in 1974, he was only 32 years old then. I worked for Buck and his sons at his country radio station in Phoenix in the 80's. I never met Don but am close with the family. Don Rich was never in the Army.
Years ago, I ran a cross a random Y/T vid of Buck where he took a guitar solo. Don´t be fooled, Buck could play guitar, folks!
Buck Owens was a studio musician in California beginning in 51. If you know who Tommy Collins was , listen to his early recordings, Buck was his guitar player.

I was under the impression there was no enmity between Buck and Merle regarding Bonnie. Buck and Bonnie’s marriage ended a couple years before due to Buck’s philandering. Merle began courting her a year or so after the divorce was finalized. Buck’s eldest son said that Melre was a good step-dad to Bucks and Bonnie’s children. I think there was also a quote from Buck where he said something to the effect that he would rather Merle marry Bonnie rather than someone he didn’t know.

Buck Owens/Buckaroos at the White House played a party for the Prez....tidbit...the Buckaroos were in all white suits, Doyle (bassman) told me that Willi Cantu (drummer) I personally met all of them, they got into a " cherry tomato fight at the Salad bar!!" Doyle tells me I can guress what the white suits looked like after that....but played well after that....funny stuff ...by the way ...greatest steel player Tom...rip buddy
Buck rented a house owned by my father that was next door to our house in algona Washington about 10 miles from Tacoma. I was very young but I have a distinct memory of playing with bucks son johnny same name as mine and same age. We drug some big rocks into bucks house and he flipped out.
I've seem videos of Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens performing. She helped get Merle his start in the music business. When she was in a nursing home, he visited her, but she did not recognize him. So sad.

But probably when his band member and friend passed, that was the toughest time to go through.

Don died before I was even born, but I grew up on their music. As a kid when ever we had a car ride I had my dad put on the Carnegie Halll concert.
It's a disgrace Don isn't in the country music hall of fame and I refuse to take that organization serious because of that.

Yes as to Merle marrying Bonnie. On his early years Buck had played guitar in Tommy Collins's band too. Do a history on Tommy . Merle wrote and recorded the song "Leonard," which was about Tommy Collins.
Never knew Merle Haggard married Buck Owens ex-wife til now. Buck Owens was a great singer...never really cared to much for Merle Haggard. Merle was too "twangy" for my musical taste.
