  • Against the backdrop of America’s escalating urban rebellions in the 1960s, an unexpected cohort of New York radicals unleashed a series of urban guerrilla actions against the city’s racist policies and contempt for the poor. Their dramatic flair, uncompromising vision, and skillful ability to link local problems to international crises riveted the media, alarmed New York’s political class, and challenged nationwide perceptions of civil rights and black power protest. The group called itself the Young Lords.
Utilizing oral histories, archival records, and an enormous cache of police records released only after a decade-long Freedom of Information Law request and subsequent court battle, Johanna Fernández has written the definitive account of the Young Lords, from their roots as a street gang to their rise and fall as a political organization. Led predominantly by poor and working-class Puerto Rican youth, and consciously fashioned after the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords confronted race and class inequality and questioned American foreign policy. Their imaginative, irreverent protests and media conscious tactics won significant reforms and exposed U.S. mainland audiences to the country’s quiet imperial project in Puerto Rico. In riveting style, Fernández demonstrates how the Young Lords redefined the character of protest, the color of politics, and the cadence of popular urban culture in the age of great dreams.
Johanna Fernández is assistant professor of history at Baruch College of the City University of New York and editor of Writing on the Wall: Selected Prison Writings of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

I’m just starting my journey into learning about the Young lords and wanting to learn more if you could guide me into a location of this information I would appreciate it. If you know where I can watch the movie “El Pueblo se levanta” I would really appreciate that information.

@@caciquev3818 I am not sure about the movie. But, in terms of books, "The Afro-Latin@ Reader," by Juan Flores and Miriam Jimenez has some good information. Also, "Harvest of Empire," by Juan Gonzalez, and there are a host of TH-cam videos that are very informative.

This is an incredibly inspiring lecture that connects the profound work of the Young Lords to the work of activism in immigrant communities today. Very important talk. Thank you so much for providing this context.

Johanna Fernandez' incredibly powerful lectures on The Young Lords and the gentrification and destruction of New York's Black and Latino peoples, esp the Puetro Rican people in the wake of racist economic dispossession and subsequently, the pauperization and lumpen-proletarianization of the Mexican people in the wake of NAFTA.

1937 operation bootstrap fired more farmers than absorbed workers in Puerto Rico. It displaced 1/3 of Ricans from the island into the USA.
We are the oldest colony and we were used to help illustrate the blueprint for the US military and government to transform so called third world countries with capitalist and development expansion on our island of Boriken..
Cacique Arasibo shed a tear that day.... 💧
And now Miya Ponsetto is out there in California fucking up...

I meant that 60s movements created a cultural revolution that allowed people of color and the LGBT community to be represented in public space. It made possible the election of a black president, but clearly representation is limited, the 60s won battles but it didn’t win the war.

Wanting your piece of the pie does not make you a socialist...However, giving everyone equal pay regardless of their input toward society withdraws incentive for productivity...why work at all? Self sufficency pays no taxes...

The Young Lords were near Halsted and Armitage in Chicago in the 60's. Next to a gang called the Puerto Rican Stones, and about 12 blocks from Cabrini Green! But look at the neighborhood now! Lincoln Park is one of the richest neighborhoods in the Midwest or Mideast (geographically correct). So The Young Lords didn't really help! The neighborhood is MUCH NICER NOW!! It was all a WASTE OF TIME!

Interesting lecture. I always find it funny when mention of Puerto Rico’s colonial status no one mentions how the lifestyle of the average Puerto Rican on the island compares to the average lifestyle of the independent “democratic” Dominican Republic and the always romanticized socialist Cuba, also former Spanish Colonies. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not for colonialism but it was the sign of the times. I would love to see Puerto Rico independent but not as another socialist Latin American country. American Marxist and Leninist wear there Che Guevara tshirts and spew there socialist ideologies from the comfort of their capitalist American lifestyle. But, “viva la revolucion”
