I found dragonfruit in a farmers market in South Florida and the cashier told me to put the white ones in the freezer and then eat them like icecream out of there skin like a bowl, The freezing amplifies their flavor, I recommend trying it that way if you havent.

I spent 3 days at a dragon fruit festival in Southern California and I learned so much about dragonfruit. I tasted close to 30 different varieties of dragonfruit. I tasted Some new varieties that were hybridized by a man named Edgar Valdevia and they had so much flavor as well as sweetness. For example some had flavors or cinnamon, floral hints, citrus flavor. I didnt even know it was possible to achieve those flavors with a dragonfruit. Aslo the yellow variety does very poorly here and takes 6-7 months to ripen as opposed to about 40 days on the red, white and pink fleshed varieties so that is why they do not grow it commercially too often. However there are some hybrids of yellow and reds that have been bred that ripen in much less time about 2 months and I would say have a superior flavor. I could go on and on about this fruit lol

Mark me jealous. I'll have to take a trip out to South CA sometime and see whats there. Thats interesting about the yellow dragon fruit and makes sense. I saw them for sale extensively in Hong Kong, but they were sold as a luxury gift giving fruit and very expensive.

Yellow Dragonfruit has weak root system, sensitive to over water root rot and all kind of pest. Very hard to grow in commercial scale . that is why they are rare.

by the way they are not prohibitively hard to grow.If you can grow Dragonfruit ,you can grow the yellow one too. Since home gardener can spent more time care for each tree.It only become impractical in commercial scale. Some youtube channel grow it.

So, my child and I just had a red dragon fruit and have decided to describe the taste as ... very bland beet and EVER so slightly berryish. I find the seeds to be sweeter. Fun to eat. We do enjoy the feel of the soft flesh. It's REALLY satisfying to separate. The outside is just SO nice to feel.
Thanks for your review! When we purchased it,we thought the inside would be white. Decided to search the internet to check if it was ripe enough/over ripe or perhaps there were different kinds.

The yellow is far superior. The first time I tried one was insane. Instantly became my favorite fruit. Very juicy and amazingly sweet and the seeds are fun to eat, like tiny airy Rice Krispies. Not sure what I could compare the flavor to. Maybe it has hints of honey dew melon. There’s way more going on than that though, almost like it’s not fruit but some kind of amazing candy with a cool gel like quality.

The dragon fruits are native to Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and other central American nations. But mainly Mexico hence why these fruits derive from forms of cacti native to the Americas. The original name for these fruits are called Pitaya a native word in Mexico and Guatemala. But I have noticed these fruits have spread world wide. These dragon fruits are actually related and quite similar to tuna from the cactus. Also mentioning leychees, I love them. They're similar to Rambutan and they're native to Asia i believe.

I just ate a pretty huge yellow variety of Dragon Fruit. It was fairly expenses. I'm in the South Eastern part of Pennsylvania and they are sold at a Syrian family owned and operated fruit and vegetable market
They sell all kinds of exotic or harder to find fruits. I actually went on a recent exotic fruit trek if you will, lol. I purchased the dragon fruit, along with star fruit rambutans, quenepas from Puerto Rico, some rather unusual plums that were pretty sweet, also, pomegranates. The yellow dragon fruit was on the sweet side and was juicy with all this soft edible pits in them. This was the first time I've ever eaten this fruit and although it was good, for me it wasn't tasty enough for me to go out my way and look for them. I guess that's how I would describe it. Good but not worth the nearly $6.00 a pound.

I know this is an old video, but where I live in Florida I see yellow and red (white fleshed) dragon fruit on a very regular basis at a grocery store called Publix. Yellow dragon fruit usually cost $4.99 and the red $3.99. They also sell passion fruits at certain times of the year. I would highly recommend people trying the yellow dragon fruit if they can, it's delicious. The passion fruit has a very strong flavor, I love it and buy it when I can. But I don't think your average person would care for it.

I've had a very large range of sweetness from the dragonfruit / pitayas that I've tried. I've only had a few in the US that were 'decent', but none that were great here.
In Central America (Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras) they were much, much sweeter, larger and much cheaper. Even the white ones were sweet there, and their red and pink ones were awesome. From memory, some were almost a purple or purple-red color too. Almost all of the white ones I've had in the US have had maybe 1/10th the taste and flavor that they did in Central America. I have had some in Mexico (Yucatan) that were pretty good too, but the best were from Guatemala, Nicaraua, and Honduras. Besides breed variation, it might be something like allowing them to ripen more on the vine if they don't have to export them that makes them so much better there. (The bananas taste so much better and sweeter there too, for that reason).
I've never tried or seen a yellow dragon fruit though.
Definitely put it on your list if you visit the area. It's an entirely different experience. Plus, at least in the late 90's and early 2000's they cost something like 30 cents each there, vs $5 each here in the US.

I found two stands in China Town in New York selling yellow dragon fruit in October. I bought one and it was delicious! I was surprised to see them in New York. I didn’t know they were in the area.

If you ever plan on visiting Missouri, you should head to global foods market in Brentwood, they have yellow dragon fruit in the produce section and I got one for $5.75 (there was an old global foods market that got turned into a whole foods, but they didn't take down the word market so don't let it throw you off, the one that's still a global foods is a bit further down the road)

I'm really lucky that a major grocery store chain down here in Texas pretty regularly sells yellow dragonfruit of a decent size.

I heard of Dragon fruit on a TH-cam video that showed “most exotic fruits” and the one that was cool to me was the egg fruit and dragon fruit. Turns out where I live, they sold dragon fruit and I tried it and when I did my body was literally like “WOAH THIS IS GOOD!” So now I eat it when I can and I am trying to find egg fruit to try that out as well.

I had something in Colombia last year that looked just like the yellow dragonfruit, and that my friend called a dragonfruit, and I really liked it, but I remember the inside being more like passionfruit pulp. Maybe I'm confusing it for a different fruit? Or maybe just misremembering?

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

hmm... I'm not sure. they do have yellow dragon fruit in colombia. it could have also been a mountain papaya or a yellow passionfruit variety maybe?

I tried a yellow pitaya today. Maybe it’s a different type, since it was quite hefty. It tastes like if you crossed banana and the white dragonfruit. Pretty tasty

This is so weird I just found a bunch of yellow dragon fruit at Whole Foods, I live in Illinois and it’s the middle of winter! I originally went there looking for a cherimoya, because I got one that tasted like bubblegum at Mariano’s, but I found these instead. They were so delicious and I’m really glad I got to try them especially cause they’re so rare!

Here in Costa Rica where they are native, there is a yellow type exactly the same as the white and red types you showed, no spines, even so, very rare to find to purchase somehow, I only eat them when my plant produces them

The red dragonfruit can be pretty sweet. My mom used to have two plants at home and they were super sweet and super good. I've tried the white ones like twice and to me they don't taste like anything at all, they're mostly just fragrant but they don't taste like much. Never tried a yellow one though

I heard the commercially grown ones are not as tasty because they are harvested before they're very ripe, but the ones from your own backyard would be sweeter. I bought a white dragonfruit from the supermarket once, it was super expensive but it tasted like a kiwi without the sweetness. I planted the seeds and I learnt it will be about 3 years before I get any fruit 🤷🏽‍♀️
