Just ordered two Radios and downloaded the prep APP for the test. My cousins and I are all going to take the test to get our licenses to use radios primarily for off-roading and camping. Thank you for all the great information and making things a little more understandable. We’re also in Los Angeles County
Hey, brother. Appreciate what you do. I have been interested in Ham radio since I was a child. I'm 46 now and finally getting into it. I saw the video you did with the Field Craft Survival guys and I jumped on Amazon the moment you said to buy a Baofeng. Just got my programming cable and the ABBREE antenna. Thanks for posting these videos. You make amateur radio accessible to guys like me.
I watched the Fieldcraft video and bought the radio. I have an FCC 1&3 and a radar endorsement. These videos are great. I have turned both my sons into ham radio enthusiasts. Keep them coming
This video showed me a few things about chirp I had not found in the couple of weeks that I have had my F8-HP. I also took your advice and got the better cable to start with. From some of the things I have ready in the FB groups I was looking at, I am glad I did. Thanks again for the series, now I have to get back to studying for my Technicians exam.
+KS Todd Keep me posted on how it goes! Download the phone apps and take the practice tests. To be honest, you're better off just passing the test than trying to learn the theory BEFORE being able to talk. The HAMs on the air are very helpful and enjoy teaching new people. Best of luck!
I find your videos to be very informative. I have always been interested in ham radios; I had an uncle who used to be into it, but always thought it may be too complicated. Watching your videos has really sparked my interest.
I loved you all the way up to downloading CHIRP, and not having the component necessary to connect the radio to my computer. I'll be back once I figure that out. Otherwise, still a big fan and still need to learn how to program my radio with channels now so I can start enjoying my radio. I will be back. In addition, good video production, I love it when I have to hit the pause button on tutorial videos---that means you going at a pace that keeps me engaged. Be back soon!
I am a M3 in the UK and fell over this site while unwell and bed ridden, while watching this vlog blog which ever I manage to programme my baofeng finally 👍I’ve ordered the 771 aerial from amazon so I can finally get to use my radio big up to you 👍
Wow. So since I stumbled upon your videos after watching a bunch of gun videos (not sure how, but I guess TH-cam decided to redirect me) I’m convinced that I want to get moving on this. I ordered a UV5R and the technician license study guide. I haven’t received the radio yet, but I did cheat on the CHIRP file. My dad has been a ham since before I was born, and he is crazy about these radios and has the CHIRP files for Houston, TX. The crazy thing is that I had no idea that my dad was even into these radios. I asked him about them, and he just started in on how he has been buying them and loves them. All along I thought he was a Kenwood and Yaesu guy. Anyway, my dad is really excited that I’m finally excited about ham radio. Thanks hoshnasi for the great videos and inspiration. I’ve been around it since I was a kid including trips to the top of a 1300 foot tower so my dad could service a repeater.
I really enjoy the videos and look forward to more. Brand new and studying for the exam. Purchased BF-F8HP and now waiting for the more expensive programming cable. Thanks for the info! Greg
What a great resource Hoshnasi! I've noticed that the "Donate" button is gone, put it back up and I'll chuck you over some $cratch brother. You just shortened my learning curve X20. BTW, don't change a thing, I read a couple comments that indicated "you talk too fast": I disagree It's perfect cadence, if I miss something, (I did) it's easy to click back and simply repeat it. If you were to slow up your talking I'd be bored and leave the channel. Perfect, and thank you again so much!
I don't want to do a monthly subscription like the Patron link wants. I'd like to flip you $10 as a thank you (thank you by the way) and not have to think about money being taken out of my account every month. Can you put your paypal address up there or something similar?
I completely understand not wanting to mess with patreon. I went and did a bit of research, it seems TH-cam in their infinite wisdom killed the donate button. Further I don't have a PayPal for Hoshnasi yet, Super chat is enabled though if you're ever in a live stream, works just like the Donate button. Appreciate you thinking of me. Thanks!
Thanks Greg KI5GKG newly re-licensed have both the UV-5R & BF-F8HP and my old equipment which is buried some where in storage Your vids have been very helpful
My first frequencies are our local (church, ARES and DEM/RACES) emergency nets, then the NOAA channels, then our local CERT nets, then our city emergency channels, then FEMA, military, national guard emergency channels and the federal civilian emergency channel, then fire/EMS/police/highway patrol, then the national calling frequencies and our local repeaters. Then the FRS, GMRS and MURS frequencies because I figure in an emergency it will be important for CERT communication to be able to contact the FRS/GMRS/MURS radios to tell them to come to the shelters. I have a Baofeng BF-F8 and a Baofeng UV-5R as a backup radio. I like them because they can both take a AA battery pack in an emergency when the battery runs out.
I want to learn more about the PVC directional antenna fox hunter's setup!! Another very good video. I have to pause between short bits to follow it and go from screen to screen to follow through the steps. The switching from computer screen to radio on the video is very good and not jerky at all.
A good way to figure out what channels to program. Is talk to some one from a local Ham Radio club. And since alot of emergency services has gone to digital, at least where I live, I am not able to scan such frequencies. Any ways, thats my two cents worth, KI7BSL signing off. 73s.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse ok, it can be manually tuned separately so both are showing at the same time but they can't be synched like the Btech mobiles can they?
I have a new UV-5R Plus and have it programmed to death with chirp via rr and repeaterbook . I do not hear a fkn thing even with a repeater close by! I have the nagoya NA-771 too!
I have watched all your videos of the Baofeng and other ham videos and they are very good but I need some help. I have a baofeng BF F8 HP, and I cannot find any video on how to set up the “warning tones”. Like on walkie-talkies the NOAA weather alerts, or fire radios with a pager type tone that only gives out transmissions when there is an emergency. Can you make a video on how to set something like that up. Or respond to my comment on what tone to use, please.
Great video! I managed to get most of the way through programming my UV5R with the computer, and found some frequencies to scan through and that kinda thing. Where I did run into issues, however, was with the RadioReference.com functionality within CHIRP. Put simply, I can't figure out how to enter my local information there since I'm not in the US and don't have a ZIP code. I assume there's something that you can put in to the ZIP field to make it work, but after experimenting for a couple of hours last night I came up empty handed. I know this isn't an issue you would have to deal with since you're in the US, but maybe you've heard of this problem before? I googled around to see if there were any hints and once again came up dry. Regardless, some really great stuff here, and you've done a fantastic job of getting me up to speed on the UV5R. Greatly appreciated!
Great instruction, have done all downloading of frequencies, however, I did not renumber and upload to radio. Can I go back and start the uploading process or do I need to reset radio to factory default and go back to video one? All these frequencies are .csv files, can I change them to the file extension? they are supposed to be? I get msg that .csv is not compatable. Are you going to show how to manually program in frequencies at some point, or did I miss it in Part one? Really good presentation, off to Part three. Thanx, Joe
Hi Joe, I have never used a .CSV in CHIRP. I am not sure it is possible. What you'll need to do is perform a "Download From Radio" in CHIRP, then paste your channels into the downloaded radio configuration. I would then make sure to SAVE your config off. Then try to "Send To Radio" to program it.
Holy cats! Which Baofeng programming video should one go by or are we to try to pull info from the varied iterations? I had hoped CHIRP would make it a simple operation but nope. So much interesting content that this crayon eater can't seem to place in the correct order. It's like you have to sort of know what you're doing before you watch. Been on these videos all afternoon trying to put it together. Do you have any suggestions on a source for green sticks to be able to program in a simple step by step without going off on tangents kinda thing. This is why I've shied away from ham all these years.
hoshnasi I got it at Amazon. There is no label on it. I am really frustrated. I got Tech. Ordered radio...1 month later got Gen. I've had Gen for 2 weeks...still haven't made a contact or heard anyone yet!!!!
help Josh !! , new at chirp.. but i made my list uploaded to radio (TWICE NOW) and cant figure out why its not saving to radio, after cloning is done.. i turn the yeasu FT-8900 off .. unplug radio from programing cable and turn radio back on.. and nothing got saved... what am i missing ??
New to this, I'm a quick study. Q; is there a way to set up two separate banks to scan i.e. scanning from keypad on CHANNEL made for fire/ems only, then scanning through FMRS/GMRS/MURS only? Also to add, this is something I found and no videos make clear, when adding memory from radio if channel is already full it always defaults to transmit, to manually enter receive delete that channel first. Knowing this can be handy in the field. Had these a week now although I was a broadcast video tech for 20 years, scholarship for electronics degree thru votech like a hundred years ago.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse excellent, thanks for all you do. I assumed this is the case although it would seem a valuable function given the labrinth menu already available. After 20 years as an East coast video tech I found out last night there are both 50 and 75 ohm BNC connectors. I still have two dozen crimp tools and hundreds of BNCs and somehow, I never ran into this. Just goes to show that helping someone else is helping yourself. Had I not been helping a local kid with his CB install I may never have known this all important, life changing Revelation.
Also, FYI I just received another box of 6 original plain Jane UV5Rs from Amazon today. In case there are some who wonder if they are still available. $130 for 6 all with batt and charging cradle each
True... I just would like to see reference to the previous one in a serious... like you put up on this video since when I watched it earlier today. I'm making my own lists in Evernote though now that I've found your videos... I'm going for my General license so I can do digital on HF. Thanks so much for these.
I saw that... that's how I found you earlier today. * Part 1 - Basic Operation * Part 2 - Components & Circuits * Part 3 - HF Emergency Communications; Part 1 BaoFeng Radio; Part 2 After the Disaster * Part 4 - Radio Signals And Equipment * Part 5 - Digital modes * Part 6 - Antennas * Part 7 - Propagation I have the links but didn't get copied in here
Chirp is a great program, Double click it. File Open or New very important Save your file name it what you like most repeaters you program in Chirp will add the needed codes etc by its self.
I was turned on to your channel by Fieldcraft. Bought a UV-5R+. PC03 cable. Downloaded the latest Chirp program. I'm getting an error, "the radio didn't respond" to Chirp. Any ideas?
Can anyone here think of a reason why CHIRP won't let me program GMRS/FRS frequencies into my radios? I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R radios (post Sept 30th) and, while I can program those frequencies into the radio manually, CHIRP won't maintain those frequencies during upload or download. Instead, it converts the frequencies to the last programmed frequency not in the GMRS/FRS frequencies. Both radios act the same way.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse .. It seems to be limited only to the software since I can program the frequencies into the radios manually. However, I lose the frequencies (as described) whenever I use CHIRP afterwards. Not a big deal. Just wanted to hear a couple of camping buddies who use FRS/GMRS radios and can't be convinced to consider anything else.
UV6R version..less box military look ..chirp has no listing that it will work but can use it for reference?..baofeng states use 'their' cable and sofware to program xp, win7..??
What's the difference between a BAOFENG UV5R 3 band or triband or111 and the standard UV5R? Only asking because I see same companies selling 2 different versions.
I play a sport called airsoft. It is very similar to paintball and I want a radio to communicate with small groups of people. I don't need tons of people all publicly speaking, I just want to talk to my squad during operations. Please help me understand how to do this because the previous videos have not helped me.
Well, first and foremost, it is illegal to use to transmit on a HAM radio without a license. If you wanted to use HAM radio, you and your crew would need to get licensed. If you do not want to go that route you can purchase FRS radios, which are PERFECT for close proximity coms. Check these out: amzn.to/2e6JGwY
Thank you for the suggestion, the only thing is, the distances will be over several miles sometimes. I would be willing to get a license, but I am not looking to communicate with a bunch of people. I have watched all of the Crash course videos, I just want to be able to attach either a headset or speaker mic to whatever I get, be able to communicate very clearly, and reach 3 miles at most.
Can you provide a tutorial on how to do this with macOS Catalina 10.15.7? Also, I am having an issue with Chirp not importing all of the repeaters for a given Political and/or Proximity query. For example, if I query an entire state or zip code, it will only return with one repeater filled in under Loc 1, but Loc 0 and 2-999 are left empty. Do you have a solution for this? Thanks, and I love the channel and your podcast!
What I am looking for is a good standalone programming course for one of these radios I am blind, don’t have a computer, and a lot of times when I watch these videos they forget to keep numbering as they go through the settings. Is there a radio that just speak solid settings
If you use chip you can select channels to skip when scanning. The setting is all the way on the right for each channel in the chirp work space when you have a programing file loaded.
I'm Eric KG7SMM. fallon NV. I have had my licence for a while now. I contacted a radio club in my area and they helped me program my radio. I want to use my radio as a hobby/ shtf awareness and the only club in my area is for emergency com's for disaster coordinations. not my thing, but im only using 1 out of a ton of programmed channels. because the last time I switched channels my radio was a paper weight for 3 month's because I didn't know how to switch between them. still don't, so I leave it on 1 of my local repeaters. I'm also trying to get a friend into ham and well its hard to get him interested when their is hardly anyone on. after I received my licence I was non stop on my radio and it took over a week before I finally got a response or even heard a voice. everyone I talk to is nice, but finding anyone in my area to actually show me how everything works is a nightmare so please keep up with your video's sir. iv watched a lot of video's and if possible. switching between channels & if my friend does get his licence on a hiking trip how would we make it just a radio to radio only. would be great thanks in advance
+Eric Dennis radio to radio is pretty easy to do. Just both agree on a frequency and set it to a channel. Don't do an offset or anything like that. It'll function like a walkie-talkie. VHF/UHF can be a tough go if there are not alot of talkative repeaters in your area. I'd definitely work with that club to get more comfortable. What radios are you using?
+hoshnasi I have 2 baofeng's (bf-f9-v2+) that did work then i switched channels and now its a paper weight I can't program it and its not on chirp yet and my new one thats I use is programmed but don't know how to go through the channels yet it is a standard uv5r
Outstanding! looking forward them- thank you very much for taking the time to explain everything in such great detail - pretty much everything I know on this subject is coming from your video and they have proved to be invaluable -
After I plug in my radio into computer chirp program I get an error message when I start to clone. Is it the computer or me? My radios have Tenway instead of BaoFeng.
How do I transmit to my kids' two-way radios?! I can hear them, but don't know how to talk to them. I have a UV-5R and trying to transmit to channel two on two-way/FMR. Someone please guide me in the right direction, I'm new!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse so even if I’m using channel 8GMRS, it’s illegal? I need to carry two radios, a UV-5R and a two way? I thought I could ditch the two way and just use UV-5R.
+19RF013 it's more of a reference for whatever radios you have. Side note, the Baofengs can operate on some cb, frs, gmrs frequencies etc. not legal to do that outside of an emergency though.
oke right i think your cb frequenties are different then mine in here there on 27mhz so i cant come there with my baofeng, for the record i have the same radio as you in this video, only in camo color
+JustDanO I have never by chance ever stumbled onto anyone transmitting on any of the call frequencies, but I have used them alot when out with friends.
Question, In this video you are hooking up a radio to your computer. It looks to me that I should buy the radio and the cord to hook to your computer at this point so I can practice what you are talking about here. Right? Wrong? I understand the part not to transmit until I have a license in hand.
I would like to see you actually set up a radio i can learn better by seeing it done or actually doing it my self unfortunately i can't get my uv_5r to program. I have even watched your videos and they help i have learned alot but i am going to have to get myself some help
Good moring...I have 2 of the baofeng UV 82 two way radio,s , but i can,t set it up for long distance..can anyone help me how to set it up, if it,s possible please??
I have programming videos on how to set them up. But these radios aren’t really capable of transmitting more than 5-20 miles depending on antenna selections.
Hey I’ve been having a lot of trouble programming repeaters into my Baofeng with Chirp. Have you experienced this? The problem is with programming the offset frequency and the offset direction. In my experience I programmed like 20 different local repeaters. All of the frequencies showed up to the channels to which I assigned them. But when I go to look at the offset and direction, they say “000.000 and off” respectively. None of the programmed channels have these details
Someone else reported a similar issue to me. Basically, if you're using CHIRP to ad the + or - offset you might not see that reflected into the menu. Or are you referring the main screen of the radio? when you tx do you see the freq shift?
hoshnasi yes I do see the frequency shift! That is the puzzling thing. You are probably right that the shift is programmed by chirp, just not visualized in the baofeng menu. As a test, I tuned one of my Baofengs into a repeaters frequency and then transmitted with my other baofeng on that frequency with the chirp settings (offset tone etc)to see if I was getting through. Unfortunately I could not seem to receive my voice. The repeater acknowledged my transmitting radio, and my receiving radio picked up that repeater signal, but I couldn’t hear my voice transmission. Needless to say I’m confused.
Generally, if you're getting the tone back from the repeater you are hitting it. So a couple things to adjust to try things out. 1. go outside, 2. get closer to that mic, 3. keep the receiving radio a big away from the transmitting radio. The Baofengs have notoriously bad front-end (receive side of radio) so you need to make sure you're not blowing it out.
hoshnasi thanks for the recommendations! I will try them out. Thanks for everything you do! Watching your videos motivated me to get licensed. You’re doing a great service to the community!
I just started watching these videos and want to get into it. I ordered a uv-5r and a study guide for the technician exam. However, I wanted to know if there is a list of download options on chirp? Are there frequencies that are used everywhere, that I can load along with good local ones and which ones are useful so I can use those and not use ones that wouldn't come in handy. I wanted to get into this for both hobby and emergency services and I'm sure there are a lot of frequencies that would/wouldn't help in times where other means of communication could be down. I appreciate any advice as a am a newbie at this.
Maybe you can help. I have 2 uv5-r's Baofeng radios. I recently ran into a bug using Chirp and it is apparently well known. I cannot receive without holding in the monitor button. I found one reference on the internet for it, but they will only help if you bought the radios through them. Do you know how I can fix this problem. I have already cleared ALL and have tried all my old programing list and even imported (with membership) from radio reference and does not fix the problem. Thank you for any help, N6ZKI
My Dad bought this radio and couldn't bring up any repeaters, he entered the frequency and the PL tone correct. He let me borrow it, no luck getting into any repeaters very close to me.
Hey Josh, just wondering if you ever ran into the error message "Suds library required for RadioReference.com import. Try installing your distribution's python-suds package." When trying to import frequencies from RadioReference.com? You're videos were able to help me get by on the "cheap" cord, and as far as importing from repeater book, however I can't seem to get frequencies in from radio reference. I do have the paid subscription if that matters. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
where is Amazon store? Does Amazon eStore button work with Chrome Browser? Also donate support button does not work? Is this the same as Gofundme or help me via paypal? Maybe donating helping can be a future Vlog tutorial? Helping youtubers for dummies?
2 part question if I program a police frequency is there a chance that I can accidentally transmit on it and do you still recommend the UB-5R and which model
HOSHNASE, I think the answer to my question below is that you didn't label them as "CHIRP...1 or 2" but rather as "HAM radio crash course...1 and 2". That right?
MAYDAY MAYDAY. Have you ever had interference using your uv-5R when using it sitting at your pc? I was programming frequencies, and when I hit the PTT button it erased a file, opened mail and closed my browser 😂😂
@@HamRadioCrashCourse should I put chokes on every wire? I wish I could send you a photo of my desk. I have dual monitors, laptop thunderbolt hub, hard drives, etc and a lot going on. I’d like to sit at my desk while operating my radio. Do you have a Facebook page I could message?
How about some insights on taking the exam? Maybe some comments on what you found most difficult about the exam. Perhaps a little input on concepts and theory. Some people learn better by verbal and visual Elmering as opposed to reading. You certainly did a good job with respect to understanding the UV5R. I'm sure you could do a great job on helping to clarify and reinforce what people have read. Thanks for your time and effort toward making these videos.
Thank you for your understanding. Having taken other technical exams, it can be very helpful to build confidence or alleviate pre-test anxieties. Some things that I and others have commented as being helpful before hand are things like exam time limits, I believe you mentioned there is a pool of about 400 questions but only about 35 questions on the exam. That is helpful to know. Is the exam computer based, written or oral. Is it broken down into section like SAT college exams. Can the test be taken online, etc? Again, I do appreciate your videos for what knowledge they do provide. But I also felt that this guy make a good point too: th-cam.com/video/UHbfQ0Q3viE/w-d-xo.html Keep the videos coming. You're pretty good at it :-)
For instance: Could you comment on these sites. Is passing the exam with these tools a good route or are there other concepts that a licensed ham should develop? Can you suggest additional resources for tools that not only get you licensed but also provide knowledge that stays with you and continues to be helpful after passing the exam. www.ham-cram.com/ www.ham-cram.com/member-lounge/technician-study.php www.arrl.org/question-pools Thank you in advance.

I want to learn more about the PVC directional antenna fox hunter's setup!! Another very good video. I have to pause between short bits to follow it and go from screen to screen to follow through the steps. The switching from computer screen to radio on the video is very good and not jerky at all.

Just ordered the 20.00 cable from your link. Thanks for videos.
Thank you for the instructions. I successfully programmed a series of channels into my BF-F8HP
Thanks I am learning alot as a newbie keep up the good work
A good way to figure out what channels to program. Is talk to some one from a local Ham Radio club. And since alot of emergency services has gone to digital, at least where I live, I am not able to scan such frequencies. Any ways, thats my two cents worth, KI7BSL signing off. 73s.
Nice! I’m in encino for about 4 more weeks. Maybe I’ll hear you on air once I get my new uv5xp set up.
I'm setting up a permanent VHF/UHF base station in my office and will add it to my Friday night live streams. Hope you check them out!
Huge Help! Thank you! Hope you make more Videos on the UV5R.
I just picked up BF-F8HP. Programmed local repeater but havent heard anyone on it.
Thanks for the video!!!!
Great videos.they are really helpful. Thank you
Very helpful! Thanks
Very helpful since I am a new tech licensee.
Got this coming on Monday! Can't wait!
Please explain the advanced setting that allows the radio to show the name and frequency at the same time
I covered it in the video.
I've never heard of that issue. How about emailing Radio Reference?
That was my next step, thanks for the response! I'll try to remember to put the resolution here if I find one. :P
Thanks, keep us posted ;)
Turns out that RadioReference doesn't support Canadian postal codes in their database downloads. Canadians will have to find another way!
Thanx, Joe
Hi Joe,
I have never used a .CSV in CHIRP. I am not sure it is possible. What you'll need to do is perform a "Download From Radio" in CHIRP, then paste your channels into the downloaded radio configuration. I would then make sure to SAVE your config off. Then try to "Send To Radio" to program it.
2 meter and 70 centimeter is used alot. Anyone here can give a quick explanation of what those labels refer to?
Here you go. th-cam.com/video/MEpBo5lixsw/w-d-xo.html
I have a mac. When I plugged in my cable for chip, the computer didn't see the cable. ????
+snaponjohn100 which cable?
hoshnasi I got it at Amazon. There is no label on it. I am really frustrated. I got Tech. Ordered radio...1 month later got Gen. I've had Gen for 2 weeks...still haven't made a contact or heard anyone yet!!!!
help Josh !! ,
new at chirp.. but i made my list uploaded to radio (TWICE NOW) and cant
figure out why its not saving to radio, after cloning is done.. i turn the
yeasu FT-8900 off .. unplug radio from programing cable and turn radio back on.. and
nothing got saved... what am i missing ??
sorry , stupid me.. it was still in VFO .. went to memory and all was there lol
No. This is just a simple one bank memory scan.
$130 for 6 all with batt and charging cradle each
Thanks for these... I'd appreciate if you would post links to previous editions in a series so I can find them.
There is a playlist on my channel page for “ham radio crash course” tons there.
True... I just would like to see reference to the previous one in a serious... like you put up on this video since when I watched it earlier today. I'm making my own lists in Evernote though now that I've found your videos... I'm going for my General license so I can do digital on HF. Thanks so much for these.
Sounds good! I have some general license videos too. We’re working through the arrl book.

Chirp is a great program,
Double click it.

very important
Save your file
name it what you like
most repeaters you program in Chirp will add the needed codes etc by its self.
Do you have a vid on how to sync a 888-s and 888S+ to same freq?
I was turned on to your channel by Fieldcraft. Bought a UV-5R+. PC03 cable. Downloaded the latest Chirp program. I'm getting an error, "the radio didn't respond" to Chirp. Any ideas?
So I nothing worked at all with the cable and chirp and USB ports....
Your radio might be firmware locked to the ham bands.
Chirps is not working for my mac. Ugh!
Does the btech uv-25-2 mini Mobil have to have to be connected to a power source to program with chirp?
What's the difference between a BAOFENG UV5R 3 band or triband or111 and the standard UV5R? Only asking because I see same companies selling 2 different versions.
I play a sport called airsoft. It is very similar to paintball and I want a radio to communicate with small groups of people. I don't need tons of people all publicly speaking, I just want to talk to my squad during operations. Please help me understand how to do this because the previous videos have not helped me.
Well, first and foremost, it is illegal to use to transmit on a HAM
radio without a license. If you wanted to use HAM radio, you and your
crew would need to get licensed. If you do not want to go that route
you can purchase FRS radios, which are PERFECT for close proximity coms.
I'm trying to download chirp and the computer keeps telling me the program will harm my computer, what do I do?
HOW DO I PROGRAM A RECEIVE FREQ AND A TRANSMIT IF YOU WANT IT ON THE SAME CHANNEL
I really need a SUPER basic how-to showing the installation of CHIRP and the Drivers for the cable. Any help?
If you buy the cable I recommend, you don't need drivers. It is plug and play.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse OK figured it out. Old version of WIndows not supported. Put it on my MAC; good to go. Thank you.
Chirp operates the same regardless of the OS you use.
What I am looking for is a good standalone programming course for one of these radios I am blind, don’t have a computer, and a lot of times when I watch these videos they forget to keep numbering as they go through the settings. Is there a radio that just speak solid settings
Com port settings?
If I have a NOAA freq in channels, how do I skip it when scanning?
+Donovan Dyer I don't think you can :(
If you use chip you can select channels to skip when scanning.
+hoshnasi I have 2 baofeng's (bf-f9-v2+) that did work then i switched channels and now its a paper weight I can't program it and its not on chirp yet and my new one thats I use is programmed but don't know how to go through the channels yet it is a standard uv5r
were is the rest of the vidss??
There is a playlist up for getting your technician license and all my other ham radio videos, check them out.
I'm only getting 4 of the ham radio crash courses here-are the rest of the videos in a different playlist?
+Bryan Reilly not done yet. More to come!
Outstanding! looking forward them- thank you very much for taking the time to explain everything in such great detail - pretty much everything I know on this subject is coming from your video and they have proved to be invaluable -
can i use one of these as a regular CB radio? not amateur?
No you cannot.
After I plug in my radio into computer chirp program I get an error message when I start to clone. Is it the computer or me? My radios have Tenway instead of BaoFeng.
What is your programing cable?
How do I transmit to my kids' two-way radios?! I can hear them, but don't know how to talk to them. I have a UV-5R and trying to transmit to channel two on two-way/FMR. Someone please guide me in the right direction, I'm new!
Just buy a cheap FRS radio to talk with them.
Transmitting on FRS with a Baofeng is not legal.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse so even if I’m using channel 8GMRS, it’s illegal? I need to carry two radios, a UV-5R and a two way? I thought I could ditch the two way and just use UV-5R.
according your list you have cb radio frequenties in there how you do that because the radio is fm only
+19RF013 it's more of a reference for whatever radios you have. Side note, the Baofengs can operate on some cb, frs, gmrs frequencies etc. not legal to do that outside of an emergency though.
oke right i think your cb frequenties are different then mine in here there on 27mhz so i cant come there with my baofeng, for the record i have the same radio as you in this video, only in camo color
cant download to computer errors errorrs baofenguv-5rx3
what is 2meter .70cm noha... what cable do i use..where do i plug it in...gosh....complicated!!!
You can find the cable in the video description to my amazon store.
Simplex call freq's are nice to know as I have yet to see that.
Yeah, the cable is used to program the radio for the frequencies you want to operator on Via the CHIRP sw. Its fully explained in the video.
I would like to see you actually set up a radio i can learn better by seeing it done or actually doing it my self unfortunately i can't get my uv_5r to program. I have even watched your videos and they help i have learned alot but i am going to have to get myself some help
Yep, here you go. th-cam.com/video/4ZMRKJy6HBA/w-d-xo.html
If you can't get the computer to the connect to the radio, its most likely the cable.
Do I have to program each frequency individually from repeaterbook ?
That is one way. You can use software like CHIRP to do most of the work for you.
Where do I find all the FRS channels?
Google it.
can you go into the 101 of start to finish doing the chirp programming to the uv5r?
I already did, check out the playlist.

All my local police and fire departments are on the 800mhz band, any recommendations on how to listen in?
Sure. Use an sdr dongle or get an 800mhz radio.
Reduce the squelch on the radio or via CHIRP.
Hey there! Very nice video and I’m just starting out with this hobby
I bought a Baofeng 5RA radio, i hope I made a good choice?
Yep! It’s a good place to start!
My Dad bought this radio and couldn't bring up any repeaters, he entered the frequency and the PL tone correct. He let me borrow it, no luck getting into any repeaters very close to me.
You can receive OK?
HOSHNASI, where's "CHIRP Radio Programming (BaoFeng) Ham Radio Crash Course #1 and 2"???
So I tried to download from my radio option and it keeps saying "Radio didn't respond" How do I fix this?
What cable are you using?
Hey Josh, just wondering if you ever ran into the error message "Suds library required for RadioReference.com import.
Try installing your distribution's python-suds package." When trying to import frequencies from RadioReference.com? You're videos were able to help me get by on the "cheap" cord, and as far as importing from repeater book, however I can't seem to get frequencies in from radio reference. I do have the paid subscription if that matters. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
try
sudo port install py27-suds
or
sudo easy_install -z suds
Yeah I tried a few times, however I'm not 100% certain I'm doing it correctly. That or its not working. Thanks
+Jonathan Sommerfeld a did you run those commands from the terminal?
I had success with "sudo port install py27-suds" but not with the other one. Still unable to import frequencies.
getting somewhere now, error message in Chirp is "invalid county ID"

2 part question if I program a police frequency is there a chance that I can accidentally transmit on it and do you still recommend the UB-5R and which model
There is a chance. But using the programming section you can reduce it by turning down the tx and on some radios turn tx off completely
HOSHNASE, I think the answer to my question below is that you didn't label them as "CHIRP...1 or 2" but rather as "HAM radio crash course...1 and 2". That right?
+rafdavfl there are other episodes.
Yeah, I went on your Channel and saw all the rest of your uploads. Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
MAYDAY MAYDAY. Have you ever had interference using your uv-5R when using it sitting at your pc? I was programming frequencies, and when I hit the PTT button it erased a file, opened mail and closed my browser 😂😂
Yeah. Rf interference. It happens. You should as ferrite chokes to your computer wires.
I thought this series was going to help me get licensed. It seems more like a huge ad for the UV5R :-(
Huh? Go download the app and study. I can't make you study.
Sure, I could do something like that. I appreciate the constructive criticism.
But I also felt that this guy make a good point too: th-cam.com/video/UHbfQ0Q3viE/w-d-xo.html
Keep the videos coming.
