Just as an FYI. This song was not their debut: that was District 9. This was a song they made as a part of their survival show: Stray Kids. To sum it up, Chan, the leader, came to JYP and said "we want to debut as a group and we think we're ready." And JYP said "Aight, bet." and made a survival show out of it.
They also had a whole pre-debut EP called Mixtape that went with this. There are two performance videos from songs on this album, Grrr and Young Wings. They're some of my favorite SK songs. And Yayaya is that bitch.

You actually figured out the meaning by yourself there ^-^ It's about their (Straykids's) road, about how their trainee days were and what they went through to finally be able to be were they are now.
I think those little things in the mv, as that first one of them was alone in the elevator and was about to press H (for "hell" I think) and the lyrics said something about no one is there to hold his hand, so I think that they are all together in the elevator at the end means that they found someone who goes through all of the tough time together!
That's what I thought^-^ hehe excuse my english though ^^

  • @NeoOphelia
    @NeoOphelia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

Your insights are pretty much spot on. Hellevator was a predebut song they made during their survival show. What I heard was that it was describing the road and obstacles they had to get to their dream, which was to debut as a 9 member group, but they’d received a lot of criticism and setbacks. Two of the members were actually eliminated from the survival show, but were brought back at the end to prove to JYP that they were better as a complete team of 9 rather than being cut down. The lyrics are super relatable to me as well.
If i’m missing anything or got something wrong, someone please correct me lol.

Hellevator was actually a song they put out before their debut, District 9 was their debut song! From what members have said and also my own personal opinions, the song and MV are talking about how going through the trainee period is really hard and stressful on a person, basically it's like hell. Thats why they are talking about people telling them to give up or them feeling like they are just stuck in darkness- bc they are still just trainees. The song and MV progress by telling and showing that while they are currently going through hell if they just keep going and pushing forward they will be able to take the hellevator out and up to success, aka their debut! :)

I started watching the survival show and knowing that they made this song before their debut is just incredible. The lyrics can fit differently for everyone but it's also easy to attach them to the debut journey. "Stray Kids woke AF" is so perfect, I haven't found a song yet that isn't lyrically genius.

adding to what everyone else said: so jisung pressed the button for the level that goes to hell so he thought he was going up to hell because maybe he deserves to go to hell or thats where everyone wants him to go and he believed it, but the suffering and hell like place had turned out to be beautiful...all that pain led to success and something better than the reality society had told them which was why they werent in the stuffy and busy city place but above it, in a open purple field. he had reached success and with the other members also finding it after him. they follow him there cuz they did it together

Stray Kids used this music video to promote their "survival show" STRAY KIDS. JYP was looking for the next big group and chose between a guy group and a girl group in the first episode. Through the rest of the show, members are eliminated and removed from the boy group. And for every challenge, their leader Bang Chan produced a new song and all the members helped write them. Bang Chan had a track on his computer called Elevator and played it for the group when they were trying to decide what to use for their next challenge song. They spent a lot of time writing the song and based it on their own struggles. They explained it as a journey through hell to get to your dreams. How every step you take makes it harder; every floor is a new challenge as they claw their way to the penthouse. Their dream was to debut as the 9 member group Bang Chan put together, which thankfully came true!

I think they're talking about their pre-debut period and their trainee days (all idols say that being a trainee is really hard and tiring) but obviously it can be read as about career or life path, about depression or mental illness. It's a deep track and Stray Kids is known to tackle these important themes, and I'm really grateful because not a lot of kpop artists write about this stuff and it should be talked about a lot more so THANK YOU STRAY KIDS you're the mvp

Hellevator was from their pre-debut show/album, about their hard trainee life days to become idols. It was such a hard and rough road, where they might not even get a chance to debut, even if they manage to debut, there's no guaranteed success. And the thing many casual fans might not realize is... the songs they released afterwards are basically the follow ups from this concept and it's really neat. What I mean by this is, Stray Kids music/concept (the whole albums, not just the title tracks with proper MVs), are basically about their musical journey, it's a musical "show" about a bunch of 'stray kids' making music together (that's why ~6 albums and 40+ songs in, there's NOT a single romantic love songs but more of self-love, and things about life), but they put it in such a general, yet specific way that people like us, can relate. And the real kicker is, since it's a "journey" you can't really fully appreciate and fully get their messages by just watching their title tracks (on random) without paying attention to the lyrics and the MV. While you can like and relate to the song/lyrics individually, you might miss out a lot of awesome things Stray Kids music can actually offer.
Like, if I were to put it in words, their music is like a novel/movie series. Each albums have their own theme/issue they tackled, and each albums/MVs that came afterwards are like a continuation of the previous albums... For example, think of Hellevator as a "prologue" of their "series" and their debut song, "District 9" is chapter 1, or to be more specific, how the 1st album (I am NOT) was about self-discovery, the 2nd album (I am WHO) was about a battle within oneself -- guess what? My Pace was from this album, and the 3rd album (I am YOU) is about accepting who "you" are, and the 4th album (Cle 1: Miroh) is about challenging a new place with a huge confident/bravery they got from (I am YOU), while the 5th album (Cle 2: Side Effects) are about them realizing and questioning, how the confident/bravery they had in the beginning when they chose the road they took, might be wrong/not be enough.
So by listening to the album/watching the MVs randomly, say, the Side Effects MV before everything else, it's like jumping into the middle of the 5th volume of novel series -- like how you probably won't realize how the night city scape from that MV was probably the city from the end of the Hellevator (and this city keeps reappearing everywhere). That's why some might even think of them as a try-hard group because they don't know the full 'story' of what they're spouting and what the group really has to offer and that's really a shame...
PS: If you, or anyone actually manage to read this far, I recommend you to listen and look properly at the lyrics of Mixtape 1 (Placebo), because basically it's like the positve, happier version of "Side Effect" Like, how they actually talked about swallowing the "medicine" that gave them the "baseless confidence" they talked about in Side Effect, but they're actually being confident in Mixtape 1 thanks to this "medicine". They also talked about going up "higher", something they did refer to their other songs like Hellevator and Miroh. That's why I'm referring to this song, so you would compare and see how amazing SKZ are with their lyrics, story and message can be. Here's the lyrics video th-cam.com/video/YfDlc9CWioI/w-d-xo.html (I also recommend checking out SKZ other songs lyrics from this channel specifically if you're interested, because it's the most accurate one I found on YT and it also gave little info on what's the songs is about in the vid, so) :D

I have to add that the whole song was made by members including choreo. 3Racha (Chan, Changbin and Jisung) wrote lyrics and produced it and Minho made choreo. They did it as a part of a survival show in which JYP basically gave them to make their own songs for every challenge and the songs are released in pre debut album Mixtape. 3Racha writes and produces all their songs that is why they are so meaningful and relatable.

Hellevator is a song about depression, which the leader Bang Chan has said some of the members have dealt with first hand. There’s many perspectives on the song but generally the beginning of the song is that rock-bottom low point where everything feels like hell but then they take the “elevator” into happiness. So it’s about rising from those awful points in your life and finding a new beginning.

SKZ lyrics are always deep and relatable, they always cover important things that usually just get ignored. That's why a lot of their songs have a rather dark sound.
They themselves have said things like: "It is us that are giving the energy to our Stays. I think it is really important for us to be making the music and for us to be talking about what we want to tell our Stay.", "We don't only write about identity crisis'. I think it could be about insomnia, it could be about us going through depression. And because we've been through it, our Stays have been through it as well and we know that they've been through it as well so we just hope that they can relate through that." and "As long as we have ourselves and as long as we have Stays, we know we can find (out) who we really are so we hope that Stays as well can find out who YOU guys are through us." (Stay is their fandom name, that's why they always put "You make Stray Kids Stay" in the end of their MVs)
They are truely one of the realest groups out there, they really care about their fans and that's why I love them so much

There is a top floor and a bottom floor and you can exit at any floor like most of us we want to get off at the top but we all have to start at the bottom and we each stop off at any floor at anytime but if you hang on you can ride to the top.

Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece! You pretty much got the meaning of the song spot on -- they recorded this song when they were filming a survival show and trying to survive as a group of nine to debut, so the lyrics definitely reflect the struggles of trying to reach your dreams. Also, this song was written and composed by three of Stray Kids' members: Chan, Changbin, and Jisung (collectively known as 3RACHA)

I absolutely love Stray Kids, they are seriously just so amazing & talented. Hellevator was a pre-debut song, was released during the survival show they were on. This song is basically about all the struggles they went through in their training years and prior an seven things they were/ are currently experiencing.
All their songs are deep and have a significant meaning, something we all can relate to in our lives, they also all tie in to each other a bit in some way. Their debut song was District 9. My favourite song and MV of Stray Kids is Voices, to me, Voices is the song i relate to the most of theirs, you need to check it out. Alot of us Stays have, in some way, been able to relate to Strays Kids songs, as they have all struck a cord in us, things we have been through. They may be a young group but i dont doubt that they will soon dominate.
Thanks for the reaction, will be keeping an eye out for your next SKZ reaction.

I've read that this song is about their trainee days at the beginning (being a trainee is not very easy), plus everyone tells them how they won't make it, and they feel like there's no one by their side, there's only darkness, sadness, and really hard work. This is Hell. But they know that their hard work and determination will take them to success. So they walk through the dark tunnel, with each other by their side, get into the Hellevator (they are talking about how all the challanges will take them up). And that's why they end up in the middle of a beautiful field, where everything is alright.
So basically they say: No pain, no gain.
My comment got a little long, but I hope I could help!😄
    Love your videos❤

Thank you so muuuch!!!! 😭 As I already wrote under another video I really love Stray Kids and I'm glad you're getting more into them.
To think that 3 members (3RACHA) of the group wrote the lyrics - and they were only 17/18/20 years old) makes this song even deeper...
So, when Stray Kids released this song, they hadn't even debuted yet. As a matter of fact, they were recording their survival show, meaning that they were still trainees and they didn't even know if all of them would debut together as a group.
I think here they are talking about the hardships of being a trainee and how trying to reach for their dreams seems so difficult, but it could also be interpreted differently, in a more personal way.
Many times Bang Chan (leader of the group, producer and part of 3RACHA) often says that they write songs for everyone to relate, to feel understood. They write about depression, anxiety, dreams, and hopes. And this song has it all.
Oh, I don't know If you read my comment under your reaction to Side Effects, but as I wrote there Stray Kids have this kind of "plot" going on. Their albums are connected and It seems like Hellevator is too. You saw the last scene, right? Where they see the big ass city in the sky. Well I believe that they finally escaped hell together and -----> went into this city (where they established their own zone: District 9 -----> debut song)
    So basically:
They were in Hell, this dark tunnel made of anxiety and depression (trainee days)
Then they found each other (scenes where they are all happy and goofy in the mv)
then they went up together taking the hellevator (road to their debut)
aaaaand found themselves in this city (the music industry?) trying to get their own spot (District 9)
but then there are other problems such as identity crisis that I already tried to explain in another comment ^^"
    I hope this was helpful!!!

Stray kids are woke kings. Chan reads fan letters and put Stays concerns in the lyrics so that the fans can relate to the music. Hellevator is Stray kids pre debut and further proves that they are monster rookies.

First ever Stray Kids song and it really caught my attention so I went to watch the whole Stray kids program. My first reaction was wow the rappers are so good, how many rappers are there honestly and then I saw they are from JYP and I was really shocked cause its not really like JYP rapping style that I have heard of and the song, in general, is not like other jyp songs.

Hellevator is not their debut District 9 is. Hellevator is from their survival shop set up by JYP where 2 of the 9 members are eliminated then brought back because JYP wanted to give them a second chance after realizing that they all need each other to be Stray Kids. And they had a pre-debut EP called Mixtape with two performance videos ‘Grrr’ and ‘Young Wings’
3RACHA is a group made up of 3 Stray Kids members Bang Chan (leader and vocalist) Seo Changbin (Main Rapper) and Han Jisung (Rapper and sometimes vocalist) 3RACHA is the producers, song-writers and composers of Stray Kids music. They also have some of there own songs:
    -Zone
    -Wow
    -Double Knot
    -Matryoshka
    -Hoodie Season
Those are only a few but they are great songs. The 3 boys who make up 3RACHA are very talented, put all their time into making songs for 3RACHA and Stray Kids. I hope you can get into Stray Kids more and maybe 3RACHA.
The members in age order and what they do:
    Kim Woojin (vocalist)
Bang Chan (leader, vocalist) (he is from Australia)
Lee Minho (vocalist, little bit of a rapper, Dancer)
    Seo Changbin (Main Rapper)
    Hwang Hyunjin (Rapper, Main Dancer)
    Han Jisung (Rapper)
Lee Felix (Rapper, Dancer) (He is also from Australia) (has a naturally deep voice it is NOT auto-tune)
    Kim Seungmin (vocalist)
    Yang Jeongin (Vocalist, Maknae)
Thanks, for reacting to them and sorry if this is a lot of information you didn’t need to know.

from my stupid brain, i can conclude :
as you can see, theres like building where that is their first shoot. that building is their periode when they are not debuting yet or you can say it like trainee period
and the hellevator, like you said that hellevator is their road to succes or their debuting process, so why that hellevator is important
and the last shoot, when their already in the beautiful flower field its means finally their debuting and become stray kids

I'm not exactly sure how everyone interprets it, but this is what I think:
Stray Kids are taking on a slight "warehouse" concept for this music video. The inside of the room (the one with the clear glass dome), is dark lit, and the different scenes in the beginning are also dark. For example, the tunnel where Seungmin and Jeongin are walking is dark, and the only source of light you really see is from the openings behind them. Another few scenes where the members are not in a group is the basketball course where Chan is, the dome room where Woojin is, and the classroom looking room where Changbin, Felix, and Minho is.
These are all dark and seemingly ripped apart rooms, just like how they described their feelings to be. Note how this is when the members are not together as a group. The only two people that we don't see is Jisung and Hyunjin. (For Hyunjin though, he is seen in the beginning of the video with the drone shot of him on top of the dome.) He goes through his emotional suffering alone, and the only shots that we see of Jisung is when he is as one person. In the chorus however, the color scheme suddenly saturates and becomes a light color. We see Jisung sitting alone on the couch sulking. Just as the beat drops, we see Changbin and Woojin jump next to Jisung, and they fall over. Then, we get shots of the members smiling and having fun as they trash the room. (Here, we even get a flash of Felix's stomach, but that's not the point). However, even though they are smiling, the scenes where they are dancing are still either dark and gray, or blood red, signifying the emotional suffering they go through, and how their members are the only reassurance that are offered.
As they sing "I'm on a Hellevator" for the last time in the first chorus, you see Jisung approach the elevator, the most important part of this whole music video which I will explain later. He hesitates, and as the chorus winds down, you see cuts of Jisung in front of the elevator and scenes of the members having fun with him. This could mean that he is having flashbacks of his members even when he's suffering emotionally. This goes to show how much support each member gives him, consciously, and subconsciously.
The 2nd verse starts off with Hyunjin sitting atop the dome with rusty bars in the background. He raps about no one caring about him as we see the whole group going down the middle of the street at night. Felix and Minho have their arms around each other as they both smile at something. Woojin puts his across across Jisung's shoulders as he starts his rap where the camera zooms in on Jisung in the elevator behind the netted bars. Jisung pushes away Woojin's arm and he walks alone, away from the group. This could signify that as pressure begins to eat up a person, they can take out their emotional stress on the people around him/her. Notice how Woojin doesn't seem angry about it. He just merely looks disappointed. It think that Woojin is the closest person to Jisung in this specific video. Whether that is true or not in real life is debatable. (Sorry Minsung). Anyway, I think that Woojin has already gone through what Jisung is currently going through as he is the eldest member of the group. He knows that if he could pull through, Jisung will definitely be able to. That is why Woojin didn't go after Jisung when he walks away from the group. Or in this case, he STRAYS away.
Why Jisung? Well I think that this music video is a story, based not on real life, but on real life situations that occur. This music video is about Jisung because he seems to be the only person left who has yet to go on the elevator. I think that before this music video occurred, every member has gone on it before hence why they help and support Jisung as he is the one struggling.
Jisung approaches the elevator again, and this time, he opens the metal bars and steps in. While this happens, you see multiple shots of items burning. Do they seem familiar? The chair that is burning looks exactly like the one in the shot of the first chorus where the members are having fun. I think this could mean that as Jisung approaches the elevator that brings him to hell, the connection that binds him and his members are pushed to the brink of disaster. The effects of fire can be reversible, just like how relationships can rekindle even after they are broken. As the pre-chorus ends, you see Jisung, again alone, with what looks like a flaming multi-colored bottle. While it is beautiful, it is also dangerous. Like you observe in this video, the glass bottle shatters as it hits the wall where he threw it as, and in a different closeup, flowers fall. This could mean multiple things. The first, could be the entertainment industry. From the outside, it looks beautiful just like how the fire is and the bottle. But when look closer, it is dangerous, and is a very hard path to go down. Another interpretation I have of this is how the bottle and the flowers connects with his members. Remember how the room he smashed the bottle in was also the room that he and his members spent some of their best times? I think that when the bottle was smashed into glass shards, they were broken and basic glass shards. But the amount of friendship and love that binds this room to Jisung and the members is powerful enough that it was able to reverse the effects of Jisung smashing the bottle and make it into something beautiful.
    Onto the music video.
Jisung steps into the elevator and closes the door. He pushes the button labelled hell, and looks up to the numbers displayed. Do you notice how that even though hell is underground, he is going up, through floors 1-5 and finally reaches the place supposedly being hell? For me, it had a double meaning again. The first could be that Jisung was struggling so much, that he was in a place deeper into the pits of suffering than even hell. It could also mean that even though Jisung thinks he's going through hell, and nothing will change, he is going through stages of healing until he reaches hell. Hell is the place where most idols live and work, and he has finally reached the destination. The elevator shaft could be the road to hell, as it is seemingly rough. Hell could be the entertainment industry again. The entertainment industry can be both intimidating and also beautiful, depending on how you perceive it, and in Jisung's case, he chose to make it beautiful instead of intimidating. He steps out of the elevator and onto the field of lavender. He streaks across the plains with the sunset in the background. He is finally free, and he is an artist that have escaped the hands of the demons inside his head. His members join him in the end, going in a group in the elevator. They get to the same place that Jisung did. This could mean that Stray Kids, although straying from the traditional path that artists go on, they will be on the same page with each other. They will see the best in everyone and everything, they will support each other through everything, and most importantly, they will stay, not stray.
Gosh that took me a hella long time, but that's what I think of the music video! Hellevator can be interpreted in many ways, so my opinion could be very different from yours! If you got here, have an amazing day!
