Bad dog training is the normal

  • Not how I wanted to start the new year but after doing an online session with an overseas client this morning I had to say this. Brutality won’t fix your aggressive dog. Avoiding the world won’t fix your aggressive dog.

As a life-long dog owner and current owner of two 6-year-old, 70lb, shelter mixes that had petty sever “aggression” issues living in Manhattan -- in a small apartment -- I’ve watched hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of dog training videos in my life and have never once dropped a line in a comment box until now! The rawness in your last video was so real that it hit me in so many ways. Thank you!
I’ll try to keep this short…
I picked up your channel about three years ago and have watched most of your stuff at this point - many videos multiple times and usually they are the “boring ones” with you building early trust with new dogs. Those videos have taught me so much that I’ve changed nearly everything about my approach in getting positive behavior from my animals. And, positive results is exactly what I got! Since then, the improvement in my dogs’ lives has been nothing short of remarkable. Because of you, I’ve not only been able to get my two dogs off leash daily in crowded NYC parks; I’ve also become a person in my community that people come to for help and direction with their dogs. And, I couldn’t be happier about that. Thank you! In addition to my own dogs, at his point, I’ve helped at least 5 others live better lives in some way. Because of you, 8 living, breathing, emotional, creatures (including me), have a more fulfilling life.
Your work is hugely impactful! Thank You!

Make sure the breeder has a license! Every city has a bylaw that requires breeders to be licensed annually. Avoid all rescue groups. You do not know the history of that puppy and you do not know the DNA of its parents and may end up as your veterinarians best client for the rest of your dog's life.

I just lost my boxer rescue in November. She was rescued after a backyard breeder released all of his dogs as stray's when he was told he was turned in for animal abuse. The rescue thought my pup was unadoptable. When I got her at three years old she was on fluoxetine for anxiety, was leash aggressive, and was very reactive to males especially if they were holding long objects.
It took me three years to heal all of her scars. I literally had to train her everyday that she was a good dog, and safe. Every day for three years, trying to find what worked for her and kept her calm and engaged. It was a lot of work, but she was worth it. In the end she was a beautiful dog. Not perfect, she had some bad days, but she was a loving companion. I miss her terribly and wouldn't give up those three years of hard work for anything in the world for the dog she became.
You have to commit to your dog and work everyday with them. I told my family, if my dog makes a mistake, it was my mistake not hers. I got through eight years with a dog they said would never be adoptable without ever having her bite someone, or another dog. If I can do it with no formal dog training, no prong collar, no shock collar, no negative punishment, and no abuse, than a professional trainer should be ashamed if they can't do the same while taking people's money.

TYSM Larry for not only doing dog training, but therapy for dogs too and saving the dog in this case. Those that do board and trains need to provide training for the owner at pick up that should be filmed to take home and watch later as well as provide follow up training. Sometimes the problem lies with trainers not being clear on the importance of training the owner, and sometimes the owner wants to dog to be a robot where the trainer downloads all the information onto the dog and the owner just needs to shout out a command a give a treat.

Yes, im blown away with what owners have paid for board and trains, without getting the results they want. I dont charge much, and half of it is paid when owner is really happy. I also give lifetime follow ups for free for any dog who does a board and train, and owners are incouraged to come daily to train with their dog, while its with me. This is what im doing to set a new standard for board and trains.

Agree...I had a great Dog Trainer that Mom found about 40 years ago, his belief in HS choke chains, showed proper placement of chain, verified every class proper placement and do no harm was his motto. He definitely would tell someone off in class for being too hard and show them the proper way. I loved it, over 20 dogs in a class that mine had to behave around, there was always one that constantly misbehaving which was a great distraction for the training in a closed environment that was safe.
Sadly, he has passed his children didn't continue his legacy of dog training.
I have gone to other trainers that were uneducated, I wanted the distraction of dogs, not a 2 dog classroom.
So now I just train myself in all public settings, EXCEPT, I don't trust other dog owners to have the decades of experience I have to control their dogs. Yes, I have been charged in a dog friendly store, by untrained dogs. My whole neighborhood has dogs on extended leashes, wearing harness' of all sizes pulling them all over the street.
I would have enough income if all of them were open to me training their dogs, but they don't care.
I am disabled on my left side, yet have my Cane Corso's obedience trained, neighbors are jealous but don't ask when they walk perfectly by my side.
Yes, they are e-collar trained because of the ignorant people that believe they can walk into my driveway when I am gardening or out front not even looking if my dogs are with me. Zero respect for my space. My Corso's know where the property line ends, so stepping onto my driveway is trespassing in their eyes which is correct.
If that great trainer was still alive I would have handed his cards out to everyone.
I don't know of any good trainers that do it right.
I have moved to HS prong collar decades ago for my pack as it's easier for me, more control around all untrained dogs that want to charge me in public.
My Corso's are my Service & Protection dogs... Can't get them certified in my Province 🇨🇦 because they say Corso's are protective🤦🏻‍♀️. My previous Corso was natural at protecting me from harm, my girl learned from him...Yet, again, I can't get additional help training my boy in blocking a threat, cause NO protection trainers here knows what I am talking about. (No bite work) I again have to do my best in teaching if unstable energy is approaching, they can't get to me to cause me harm.

I work with dogs myself Larry and I can’t begin to even comprehend the attitude of that trainer/trainers! Playing with, goofing around with our dogs is one of the biggest reasons we have them. What you said about gaining trust, about educating the human element how to maintain a rehab dog, to prevent them recreating the issue I’m fully behind you. I only really help dogs that are in a bad place, so don’t really know what I’d call myself to be honest, but my experience is if the dog trusts, you meet its needs requirements and desires, the dog finds its way and will automatically be well behaved. I’ve said the same thing to my clients, if your dog is doing great after we’ve finished working together, that’s 90% you 10% me and that 10% is just me showing you how to give your dog what they need by understanding them. I didn’t see this vid as anything but positive, you termed a negative subject positive, that says a lot about your skill. Peace brother and a very happy New Year to you and your House Wolves ✌🏼

Having rescued a dog who had serious issues (the shelter told me it was a “gold star” with zero issues) finding the right trainer is so important. She pushed me hard to do things correctly. And gave me written information to keep and refer to. 25 yrs and multiple dogs later, I still work all the exercises with my current dogs. And still have all those handouts. I’m so lucky.

This is a spot on video, and I don't think there is a need to worry about offending anyone by calling out bad practices.
I usually don't click on videos anymore that have a negative connotation, because there is so much click bait on TH-cam. This video, however, I immediately clicked because I have made bad experiences with dog trainers to the extend that I reverted to online-training only, following just a few trainers with a balanced training philosophy.
I now have a high-stamina, initially reactive border collie, who can travel with us through tourist cities and is doing well in most situations. This is thanks to good online trainers. If I had sticked with the first trainer we encountered locally, my dog might have ended up in a shelter. Therefore, speaking up against bad dog training really helps safe dogs.

I am a force-free trainer but I agree with you completely. If you choose to punnish a dog, there is a way to do it that is not straight up abuse. It's incredibly disheartening to see people claiming to be "trainers" or "experts" when they do not understand the dogs emotional state or the way the dog is thinking and just instantly go into prongs and shock collars.
I work with rescue dogs and it breaks my heart that the rescue and a lot of the time those dogs that have gone through that type of abusive training get euthenized. They are usually supressed and a higher bite risk and instead of going through the natural staged of showing their warning signs, they go from 0-100 because previous "trainers" would ignore them and just zap/choke them out. It makes them unpredictable.
It's incredibly hard to rehome a dog that is unpredictable like that, most members of the public would be either unwilling or just not equipped to deal with that behaviour. If we sent the dog out to a home and it bit someone it would be all around so bad. Rescue kennels are stressful environments for dogs, you see normal dogs go mentally insane because it's just not a good place for a dog. They are stressed out 24/7 and many often require medicating becuase they just don't cope. No amount of enrichment will help some dogs. A stressed person or dog has a hard time to learn, which makes training in that sort of environment incredibly hard. A dog that is more stressed is more likely to show those unwanted behaviours and that makes those dogs so much more unpredictable. They end up having more and more incidents in kennels, they get harder and harder to rehome, they end up getting euthenized.
It's sad because in the right hands these dogs could be such amazing dogs, but ultimatly they are the victims of abuse.

I stopped and will hardly take board and trains after having an owner not put in any work or want to listen and the dog was being trained for service work. I struggled to get her to be on any page and anytime we met in person. She unfortunately did not want to put in the effort and although she did not pay as much as it should’ve been and if they don’t, then ultimately it’s on them. I love what I do and take it very seriously so when this happened it was hard for me to see but knew I can only do so much(more to it but the short story). Thank you for posting this! ❤

4:27 Board and train ruined my GSD and the trainer offered no post-training assistance. He did convince us to send the dog BACK to him for additional board and training, which just made him worse. He ended up reactive and aggressive, we couldn’t walk him or take him anywhere. We couldn’t have company unless he was locked away, we couldn’t take a vacation because we were concerned he would hurt a dog sitter and we had to put him down eventually after he bit a friend’s child. I really appreciate your comments in this video. We have a lot of regrets about how we had him trained, although we had good intentions.

The big problem with board and trains is most trainers, not all of them, focus a lot on obedience commands and never even test them in real world situations. They don’t work on actual behavioral problems. The dog determines what an actual punishment is not us, so cranking a dog on a prong or blasting them on an e collar is just ridiculous. I want dogs I work with to WANT to do the things I ask of them not terrified to make a mistake.

100% agree with the board and train comment. I have a 5 month old puppy. I couldn't imagine sending him to a board & train trainer. Especially without me being trained after. We have just started with a trainer 3 weeks ago. Really the biggest thing I have found is that it is my timing and my learning what to do to train the dog that is most important. The trainer can do it, but if I can't do it then there is no point.

I'm not a professional trainer, I'm just a dude that got a dog with behavioral issues and spent the last year learning from the best people i could find. And practicing what I've learned through trial and error with my dog and dogs i work with volunteering in the shelter. In my opinion, the three best ways to have lasting change in a dog, is through freedom, fulfilment and clarity. Sure there's other stuff to it. But it's certainly not through suppression or controlling the dogs every move.

Ok, how the hell are you supposed to walk around in the USA with your dog off leash? I have had dogs for over 20 years in multiple states and NOWHERE could I walk where off leash was allowed. Yes it frustrates me to no end. I lived in Europe and always found places to let my dogs run. In the states…nothing. Stupid dog parks is all.

    Hi Larry,
I picked up the new video class on Sit/Stay/Learn and it is excellent. Im only part of the way through it but Its very well done and it's much more thorough than your e-collar video - which I liked.
In the last year and a half I've paid for education from:
    Michael Ellis (Theory 1 & 2).
    Numerous other Leerburg courses.
    Ivan's Corner Stone Collection.
    The entire Shield K9 Curriculum.
    Larry's e-collar & communication classes. (And a phone consultation)
And a hand full of books.
I haven't gone through this much education since I went through my electricians apprenticeship over 20 years ago. 😆
Anyway, if anyone is interested there's a sale right now and you can pick the video up for about $40.
Even if you already have a firm understanding of the topic its still worth the purchase IMO.
Larry thank you for sharing and Happy New Year.

Board and train trainers are 💩 as far as I'm concerned. Dog training is in fact handler AND dog training, as many issues arise from improper handling. If the handler isn't also trained, no amount of dog training is going to change anything.

That's the old school European way of training. Science has debunked all that shit. Those trainers who teach that usually don't even coexist in the same house. They kennel them for 20 - 23 hours a day. Ridiculous..

I believe one of the main problems is a lot of people, including dog trainers, don't understand that dogs are complex creatures. Many believe in that old (and long debunked) idea that all dogs want is to dominate everyone 24/7, and that leads to unnecessary and unproductive punishment.
When I decided to get a new puppy, before he was even born, I asked a lot of people for dog trainer recommendations around my area before chosing the trainer to help me with the puppy before it became problematic due to my inexperience with large dogs. After all the research I choose a trainer to work with him. My Giant Schnauzer pup is now 5 months old and he is far from perfect, there is still a long way to go, but he is already absolutely amazing, smart, obedient and you can see is a happy dog who enjoys his life and our company. There is no better feeling than seeing your dog happy to see you, to go on a walk with you, to look you in the eyes and walk by your side with a wagging tail.

What are you even saying in this video. A dog shouldn’t be jumping and acting crazy at pick up. Start showing your board and train progress because it sounds like youre doing the same talk about the other trainers are doing
