In regards to a bank: can you go to any bank in Mexico or just a bank in which you already have an account with.

Some banks have currency exchange services but the most pratical way(especially if you don't have a Mexican bank account is to use the specific currency exchange places as they give the best rate . Thanks for your comment and I hope I was able to help a bit!

How small peso bills should you get from the ATMs to have cash on hand? 100s? 20s? 500s ?

The smallest bills you can get from an ATM or 100 peso notes. So for example, if you get 800 pesos from an ATM you will most likely get one 500 bill, 100 bill and 200 bill. Or it could be divided up amongst 200 notes, all depends on the ATM. The highest notes available in Mexican pesos are 1000 but I’ve never seen an ATM dispense that, I’ve only gotten it from inside of banks.

@@wheresjarell3854 Does that mean that for those peso bills ordinary local stores have sufficient change in smaller denominations when you pay with 500 or 200? Should a person come down to Mexico the first time with say 10,000 pesos in 500s and 200s? Or smaller? Is it risky to carry around a lot of cash?
