Hello, I just purchased one and I am curious. The longitudinal axis is difficult to turn by hand. It works in auto with no issues. They told me to try cleaning the rack and pinion. I have and unfortunately still have two use two hands on the hand wheel. I should state my table lock is not engaged. Have you had to do any work to your carriage and/or smooth frome day one?

I think you worry too much about oils fella. ISO32 for the headstock and any mineral oil for the rest works for me. Chinese lathes are pretty much accurate these days and the finish is generally better too! The amount of money you spend getting it out of China however is reflected in quality. Pay a cheap price, get a cheaper, nasty product, pay more and the product tends to be as good if not better than anything else in the world market.

I still can't get over the people that say that something is automatically crap because it comes from China. Where are you getting your lathes from? Don't you realize that quality from China depends entirely on the QC that the wholesaler/retailer requires from the manufacturer? That was true even when stuff was made in the US. Do you remember how bad American cars used to be? They are WAY better now. Where do the parts come from?

Very nice lathe, but why at that price point don't they include a threading gauge? Do you really want to wait all that time for the lead screw to return the carriage to the start point vs going back by hand and engaging on your thread number? Is there an option to add it later? Deal breaker for me, sorry.

  • @turningpoint6643

I own the previous generation of this lathe. They've added some better designed parts to the machine like that properly hinged head stock access door, cam lock spindle nose, octagon feed rod and spring loaded feed clutch instead of the shear pins mine has. Since you don't show that side of the carriage it's hard to tell, but yours didn't come with a threading dial? A 100% non optional requirement in my opinion. ALL half decently designed lathes will have one because it's much faster when threading to disengage the half nuts, run the carriage back to the starting point using the hand wheel and re-engage the lead screw at the correct point using a threading dial. Your perception of thread cutting in both directions by changing the lead screw direction will not work due to the required and necessary back lash between the lead screw, half nut, and the gearing driving it. Thread cutting is always done in one direction on any lathe because of that back lash issue. Yours looks to have a better and higher quality motor and drive circuitry than mine came with, mines ok but still a bit limited on it's bottom end torque at larger diameters. A decent 3 ph motor and VFD would be far better I think.
DROPros are handing you a complete line of BS about this machine and the way it's equipped as being unavailable from anyone else. Weiss and I'm quite sure most or all machine tool manufacturers have a list of options for any dealer placing an order to check off. When I bought mine from a tool dealer in Quebec there in stock lathes only had MT 2 tail stocks and MT 3 spindles on the rear mounted milling heads. If I was willing to order and wait 4 months for the next shipment Weiss would build and ship to that dealer any combination of options they offered at the time. Since I wanted the MT 3 tail stock and the milling heads spindle in R8 and not the then standard MT 3 at the time. I ordered mine that way and waited. I doubt just anyone could order a single lathe or mill directly from Weiss equipped the way you want from there options list. But any dealer who does sell enough of there equipment certainly should be able to if your willing to wait for it to be built and shipped.

You've asked the same question on a few videos about this lathe and so far no one seems to have bothered answering it. They probably won't be a 100% direct fit due to the tool posts center stud hole being an incorrect size compared to what the lathe comes with. But that's what lathes are for. You can just build your own adapter stud that fits the top slides requirements and the diameter the tool post needs. Thread pitches would be up to you to figure out. An AXA sized tool post would work, but sometimes you may need to reduce the maximum tool shank size the tool holders can take to allow the tool holder to drop low enough to get the tool point on your lathes C/L. Both Aloris and Dorian have good diagrams on there web sites for how to correctly size a tool post for the available height between the surface of the top slide and your lathes C/L. Measure what you have and cross reference the manufacturer's dimensions of the tool post sizes there building for what ever brand of tool post and holders your planning on buying..

You can work up to 2000 rpm but you have to be under 400 to engage the feed gear. You still have the half nut for both the carriage and cross slide which can be engaged at any speed. I use power feed with carbide tooling all the time. I’ve never heard that. The DRO that comes mounted on the machine is nice but basic. I opted to buy without DRO and install DroPros EL400 because of its advanced features. They sell machines with or without the Weiss DRO. They offer a discount on a DRO when purchasing a machine. I don’t remember prices. I’m getting ready to purchase a VM32 mill and I’ll be going with the DroPros EL700 DRO. Call them, they’re very knowledgeable. Or go to the website.

You seem very excited over what is basically a toy Chinese lathe, good on you and happy for you and enjoy what it can do for you, BUT !, I feel you will probably quickly outgrow that unit in terms of its accuracy and what it can achieve. Chinese lathes are very pretty and look to offer something for your money but once the surface is scratched and their accuracy is tested and quality examined they disappoint. Taiwanese lathes such as Grizzly, Hafco, Axminster, Precision Mathews and a cast of others all the same units but rebadged and in various hues will not disappoint. You get what you pay for in lathes and while you might feel I am a kill joy, in time you will reflect back and realise these words are absolutely true. For amateur newbie requirements what you have there will serve as a learning tool that wont rip your arm off or cause grievous bodily harm. If you venture into serious or fine machining then you will find you will eventually take interest in the Taiwanese machines mentioned.
