A bit of Elizabeth Cotten, of Chet Atkins, of Tommy Emmanuel and a li´l bit of me... :)
I threw in a number of "licks and tricks", it´s like a song that never ends...
Thought it sounded sweet with some el. piano + shaker.

Sweet mother of pearl! So many great comments and ratings, a big thanks to everyone who watched and listened! It does pay off to work hard on the arrangements, it seems :)
Regards
Martin
Man alive, what a great representation of an iconic classic finger pickin' song!
Thank you Carl!
One of the worlds best finger picking guitar player.
too right, fucking impeccable.
The definitive version of the all-time classic. Beautifully played.
Mate, this is absolutely class. As a player of 20 years, i appreciate the skill level of your playing so much. Amazing sound brother ❤
The quality is amazing wow.
that's the best version on youtube by far. I still come back after 12 years to listen to it from time to time. I would very much enjoy a tutorial of how to play this
Thanks man!
It was never better, Martin. All my stars for you. The best arrangement I've ever heard of this tune. Your playing is so great, groovy, with expression and a lot of humour. I'm always glad to hear new stuff from you.
All the best, Bernd.
Thank you! Sorry, no lessons, not the teacher type, although I may look the part, ha!
I have thought about an instructional DVD, but that´s as far as I´ve come ;)
No summaries available either, but that´d be a good idea, if I were a better writer!
Sorry, I´m such a downer...
I met Elizabeth Cotton about 40 years ago. I sang for her and Mike Seeger at a concert. I think she was 90 at the time, showed a wonderful sense of humor and was a dear dear lady. I'd bet that she would laugh and clap her hands with pleasure at hearing this. --Did you know she played the guitar upside down--she picked the bass line with her index finger and the melody with her thumb. She was left handed and no one showed her how to play, she just learned.--You, young man are a gifted picker. Smooth, precise, really expressive. Fantastic! Thank you for playing for us.
+Brian Skinner Thanks Brian! Great story and experience. Yeah, I have seen some videos where you can watch Elizabeth pick in her own very original way :) Wasn´t that half jokingly called "Cotten picking"? A bit like like Jeff Healey, who also came up with his own style of playing.

Wow! What a fresh and inspiring performance of an old number. Just what I need to get me practicing again. Thanks!
Martin...the more I listen to you ..the more I had wished I had learned as a kid..started with a plastic guitar..at like 3 then a wood one at 7..lessons ..and no one to push me. played off and on with music books growing older learning by myself...never achieved my dreams....You my friend are one..that I wish I could of been.. God bless your mental ability as well as your dexterity.
Hi again, thank you. Playing this kind of fingerpicking style I use a lot of palm muting which needs a certain right hand position - so then I can´t really use the thumb nail. The thumb pick helps getting a good and solid feel and sound. Of course you can play with the "flesh" of the thumb, works as well. However, I also use the thumb pick as a flatpick, like on the jazzy "run" at 1:32
Hope that wasn´t too confusing :)
Cheers
Martin
That is the smoothiest, yet fanciest and most complex version of reight Train I've ever heard. It's just a delightful rendition of this classic old song, while being a masterpiece on the fretboard. The best version of Freight Train I've ever heard.
Martin can you add "Deep River Blues" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright?"
Great stuff!
Martin has great enthusiasm. May you always be so young. Life is good.
Quite a lively arrangement, NIIIIICE !
I've played guitar for over 50 years professionally - and you are a rare, gifted, guitarist......period.
You throw in some beautiful licks, while maintaining the steady groove. Beautiful playing/arrangement.
Gets better every time I watch! Wicked effortless tone!
You play the best version of this song I've
heard in years. You show real confidence and mastery on the guitar..a la a litle of Jerry and a little of Tommy..Great !
Inge problem! De här är bland de skönaste jag hört på länge
Fantastiskt! Oerhört välspelat och svängigt. Tacksamt originalmaterial, men.. wow!
I never grow tired of watching this Martin - it's sublime; amazing virtuosity, but so utterly musical, not a note too many or too few. I like to imagine Elizabeth Cotton sitting down and listening to you play this. I think she would adore it. Bloody fantastic.
Thanks, that´s very kind of you! Sorry for the late reply.
Gee I wish I could play like this
The best version I've heard of Freight Train
i for one wish it had gone on and on, great range of tone and emotion . makes a standard sound fresh and exciting like the first time you heard it.. thanks!
Thank you. Enjoy your music alot
Thank you :)
love it! so smooth, it doesn't even need the little keyboard in the background
Fantastic. It just keeps getting better and better!
Finally!!! i finished learning this song only watching and listening to this song =) thanks for wonderful arrangement Martin!
me and a buddy "stumbled upon' your Man of Constant Sorrow vid a while back and since then i probably seen all of your videos and love them all. You have Amazing talent and i enjoy watching you play. very few guitarists ive seen are as smooth and soulful as you! You are definitely one of my favorite guitarist of all time. Anyone who agrees get your asses on itunes and buy this album and support this guy! I will be doing so after i finish this message. Rock on brotha and keep the vids comin
Absolutely fantastic Martin. I had first seen Gabriella's version and then Sungha's version. I was blown away by both. Then I saw your version, which I now know is your arrangement, and the differences are night and day. You add so much dynamics with the occasional twangy plucked notes. Any chance we could get tabs on this?
Virtuosity is it's own reward !!!
just incredible control and feeling. One day I hope to have that control.
Absolutely riveting. I love playing this song but watching you play it is incredible. thank you for sharing!

never cease to amaze...Stradivari !
And just when I'd taken ages to learn a Tommy Emmanuel version of this tune, I stumble across this amazing rendition. Bloody hell, Martin, you've got some great skills both in playing and arranging. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for me....again! Brilliantly played and very entertaining! Nicely done. Cheers!

@Plutoniumhf
Hi, thank you for the support! It is normal tuning. Maybe it will help if you think of the arr. first as a chord progression, and leave the other extra show-off stuff for awhile
The basic verse is like so
C G7 G7 C
E7 F C-G C
The melody is pretty much in those chords
Good luck!
Martin
Wonderful! Just wonderful!
Awesome! Much thanks to our talent scout Pascal for finding you! Outstanding my friend!
cheers
Wow!! Fantastic picking!!! I gotta learn how to do that!!. This is going in my "Favorites".
