There’s no one else in the world that can make an acoustic guitar resonate and sound the way Tommy does it. He really bends it to what he wants. This is the true meaning of an instrument being an extension of himself.
I just watched this again. It brings me to tears this track. It's soooo beautiful. And he plays it here sooo cleanly. He is such a talented man. I am so blessed to have had him as part of my life. Thank you Tommy.

Hello Great Tommy. I just read that you will be in Spoleto at the end of the year. For me it's beautiful, fantastic news, because for me you are the greatest guitarist in the world. Unfortunately, I have my partner with Alzheimer's, and I really have no way of being able to come and admire you, you and your great guest. I live in Cerqueto di Marsciano, about 45 minutes from Spoleto. Maybe I will seem like a fool to you, but I would be immensely happy to be able to host you here in my small town, sorry, host you. We have a small church with a huge old organ and exceptional acoustics. I begin to pray now with the immense hope of seeing you here. Tommy has said that he plays Maton guitars not just because they're Australian, and sound great acoustically, but because they have the best electronics, pickups, and mic tone he's ever heard. This production really shows that off! Incredible sound.
The way Tommy closes off the sound with his fingers to the frets at the very end ... it feels like an acceptance of death after expressing a beautiful life. The finality of that gentle gesture is a dramatic gesture. It chokes me up, how you can almost feel his reluctance yield to acceptance. And the song is over.
I’ve been listening to music all my life and I’ve heard tens of thousands of songs across dozens of genres. When I heard Those Who Wait for the first time close to a decade ago it stuck, and now I can say it’s one of my all time favorite compositions ever.
Yeah this song composition is on another level. It has a depth we can't explain.

In addition to being in a category of your own Tommy [as a player], this song, Those Who Wait is among my favorite songs of all time. Its simply gorgeous, and brings tears to me. Music is emotion! If I am unable to evoke emotion with my music, I have failed. I have attended your concerts about 8 times: the latest in Boston about 3-years ago. I met you about 13-years ago when you played the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts: the second show. I was able to meet and speak with you for about 10-15 when at this time you were very gracious. You were just making a name for yourself in US at that time [I believe]. I remember thinking, this guy is likely the most amazing player on the planet and there are 8 people in the audience. I couldn't believe it. Your music has brought much joy to me, and many other people I've turned on to you. Rarely do I enjoy remakes of any great tunes. You have a special ability to do your own rendition and its great. The fact that you wrote this song places you in a special category. Bravo !

I agree, it's maybe my favourite composition by Tommy. For me it sounds so evocative of a misty winter's Sunday morning in rural Australia.
His touch sensitivity on this song is amazing but as you say ...it is a beautiful , haunting piece of Music that really takes us somewhere. This is the first time I heard it....
Stepping the key down makes this even better than all previous versions. His playing matches...captures the essence.
@2centavos By ear. I knew it was tuned a whole pitch down by the bottom string as it was not a D pitch but a C. Look for his other YT videos where he plays the song in the normal key. You will hear the difference. The lower tuning is much better IMHO.
Tom and Phil were born to do this. Enable mere mortals may attain such standard, hmm, A gift, I wish.

I used to play 8+hrs a day.. To get good it's got to be ur passion. Unfortunately it's not mine any more as I have others now.

I remember hearing on the radio in the late 80's that you were heading overseas to pursue a solo career. I was taken aback for selfish reasons because I would no longer be able to get to your gigs. But you were so good that I felt you deserved a world stage. I felt the same thing about your brother Phil too. The world didn't have TH-cam then. Now, although not as good as your live gigs, what a treat, seeing your solo performances or your collaboration with other guitar peers. I'm living in a fortunate time that may have never happened if you had not believed in yourself. Thanks Tommy.

Makes the hairs on my neck stand up every time I hear this, and always puts a tear of joy in my eye. The Master at his finest.
His right hand work is incredible. Not only is he precise vertically, but horizontally. He thins out the bottom end by moving toward and away from the bridge at the perfect times to fit the song. He uses finger style along with a pick at just the right times. It all contributes so much to how the song comes across, not just whether he can play the notes perfectly in order
Tommy...I've lost count of the number of your performances of _Those Who Wait_ tune I've seen. I love them all, but this one...is...transcendent. The world is a better place with your music in it. From the bottom of my heart...Thank you, brother!
I got to see Tommy perform this in 2018. He had recently returned to the States after the passing of his sister and brother. My own father has passed a month before. I was able to tell him that, as well as pass my condolences at the Meet-and-Greet before the show. The feeling with which he played this song that night brought tears to my eyes. It will always be one of my favorites for that reason. This version is just as moving!
He has a lot of strength in his left hand particularly. That’s partly why this works so well. Pull offs and hammer ones.

Tommy can tell story with his music. The verse of the song is in minor key which provokes sadness and depression. From verse to chorus Tommy wrote a beautiful key transition from minor to major which feels just like seeing the long awaited light after the darkness. I got punched so hard evertime I hear that transition.
Been a fan for close to 20 years and this is still by far and away one of your most beautiful pieces of music.

I can claim 71 years. I have been in the trenches with a guitar since age 16. But, what I do best is listen. "Those Who Wait" is the most beautiful composition I have ever heard. Upon first listening I was at once undone and tearfully, gracefully reassembled with an added dimension of satisfaction I had not known I was seeking, the missing piece with which sense is made of all that cannot be verbally explained among the jangling perplexities of our existance.

A coworker gave me Tommy Emmanuel’s “Only” CD after I told her that I played guitar. I didn’t think too much of it, and let it sit in my car for a while. When I eventually put it into the CD player, my life changed. I have always been a huge blues / electric player, but Tommy is on another level. He is one of the, if not the greatest guitar player alive today. I wish I discovered him sooner. Thank you, Tommy. I was supposed to see him but the pandemic had rescheduled it - first, to my birthday, but now to September. I hope that we can all make it through this and get to see Tommy live once again.

Compositionally, I love how he slowly builds tension, then releases it in the "payoff" section. In performance, I love the tension-building rubato.

This is the only Tommy Emmanuel song that I (as a 'meh' guitar player) felt an overwhelming urge that I just had to learn. After many many hours of practice I got it down and would comfort myself just laying on my bed, eyes closed, and playing it while my mind wandered. One day I went over to a friends house who was an excellent electric lead player in a local rock band and saw the acoustic sitting there so I picked it up and started playing it. He said something like "ahh what is that mellow crap your playing, it's boring!", but I continued playing to the end and we went and did something else. The next day I go back over and he says, "Hey, can you play me that song you were playing yesterday again? I've had it stuck in my head all day!" That's how you know you wrote a good song...

How is it sooo good? The sections flow so well into each other. Each change is like a sweet memory flooding back.
Start at age six, practice 6 to 8 hours a day, and do 300 performances per year. You start to get good after that. And, IMO he gets inspiration from above...
