Here's Big Bear, A Community In The California Mountains

  • Wow! California has some amazing mountain communities.
For this video, I drove along Highway 18, also known as Big Bear Blvd. The route took me from the outskirts of Big Bear, past Big Bear Lake, and then into Big Bear Village. It was a spectacular fall day without a cloud in sight, where the temperature was 68 degrees. The day was Friday, October 30, 2020 at 1 pm.
At the beginning of the drive, we’ll be passing through the Main drag as they call it in Big Bear - where most of the community finds its shopping and entertainment. Then we’ll pass the lake, and then at the end of the drive is the charming Big Bear Village. The entire length of the trip is just over 6 miles.
Big Bear City is a town in the San Bernardino National Forest. There are just over 12,000 people here. The city lies on the banks of Big Bear Lake, a snow fed reservoir that’s about 3,000 acres big. This whole region at the top of the mountain range used to be Native Americans and grizzly bears up until around 1850 when explorers found a little bit of gold in the region. It’s grown slowly ever since.
Big Bear is a year round destination for a lot of people from Southern California. There’s skiing and snow tubing, boating, hiking, biking, fishing, off roading, shopping and fresh air.

Actually everything up here is turning into air BnBs. There's next to no full time rentals. Unless you're looking to buy a house up here, no point in moving. Also, since covid hit and we've been getting crazy amounts of tourists we can barely go places in our own town. It is beautiful and we do have a great community.

From the 50's through the 80's my parents had 3 different "cabins". One behind the theater downtown, one in the area of Snow Summit, one in Moonridge. The entire Valley was rural, laid back, safe, everything was Mom and Pop scale.
Now it is just like down the Hill, all curbs, gutters and sidewalks, a traffic signal every 500 feet, every franchise food operation known to man. If its in LA, its now in BB. Probably get a ticket for too many pine cones in your yard now.

Hi, I work for a 5 star restaurant in big bear. I can't say the name or I might be fired. But yeah the tourism here is kinda destroying our community. You can get a ticket/fine if you do not clear your property of burnable waste because of the wildfires we get. Recently meth use has skyrocketed because of the tourism... Locals usually fillander with tourists which exposes them to the substance and gangs have posted dealers here to supply the masses. With the pandemic things have gotten worse. Nobody picks up waste, and the town has still been low income despite the millions of dollars in tax revenue it generates monthly (it goes tword metropolitan san bernardino or it goes to maintain emergency services.) Doesn't help the locals or their infrastructure. I could go on for days about the illness or ailments that are destroying this beautiful town but honestly I pray every day for peace to come back to our community. god bless and stay safe.
PS if you don't wear a mask you'll probably be arrested, or beaten.

    • @vegas1a
      @vegas1a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rickslick69420 Meth? Damn, I didn't even think about that dirty side of society. Pretty sad state of affairs. Like all the garbage moved from South LA, turning San Berdoo into the most dangerous city.
Once had a conversation with one of the store owners along the main street. She practically went hysterical about living in California. Said the minute her husband retired from his high paid aerospace job, they would be leaving Cali.

It’s actually the City of Big Bear Lake, a full time pop of just over 5000. The city is south of the lake and consists of the Village and most of the heavy commercial areas including the ski resorts and lots of second homes. North of the lake is unincorporated Fawnskin and Then there’s the unincorporated Big Bear City (it’s a long story). Together, the Big Bear Valley has a population of about 18,000. It’s isolated, only 3 routes to get on or off the valley (down the mountain) and has been evacuated once (Big Fire in 2003) although parts of the valley get evacuated periodically due to fires. Biggest natural disaster threats are fires and earthquakes (it is California even if it doesn’t feel like it). Sometimes landslides and floods. There are bears and other wildlife. It’s beautiful, it’s a four season resort, easy drive from anywhere in Southern California and even from Las Vegas. It’s a popular destination so it’s very crowded on all holiday weekends. The unincorporated areas are mostly full timers. There are many other unincorporated small towns in the San Bernardino mountains, mostly bedroom communities. Anyone “off the hill” is a flat lander.

It is a beautiful little town with a beautiful little lake but very underwhelmed with it. Maybe that's because I was so used to lake Tahoe. You can compare big bear to North lake Tahoe minus the huge lake.

Big Bear...Big Bear Lake....Big Bear Boulevard.....this reminds me of a postcard at a local restaurant when I was a boy. A rather rubenesque middle aged woman is surprised by someone opening her bathroom door. Startled, she grabs a towel to cover herself, leaving her plump backside exposed. The card read, "Be careful, there is a big BEAR behind!" I was only about 8 at the time, and found that postcard VERY interesting. Things were kinda slow in small town Iowa in the 60's.........

Been there quite a bit. Masala Craft is a good Indian restaurant there. The ski resort turned some of their ski slopes into mountain bike paths and you can take the ski lift up with your bike. I think $30 or $40 for the whole day. A little pricey but worth it

I am not from TX, but have traveled to many parts of that state. I agree it’s mostly flat and for the most part humid - unless you travel to western TX - from Ft. Stockton to El Paso, where you will see a few mountains and the climate dries out quite a lot.

Only one correction to your ture of Big Bear... The city of Big Bear Lake is located on the Lake and the Village is the 'downtown' area. However there is an area called Big Bear City... Not to be confused with the city of Big Bear Lake.
Big Bear City is an unincorporated area East of the city of Big Bear Lake....
and this unincorporated area is not located on the Lake.
    Confusing, I know!😉

I had two co-workers that worked and lived and grew up in Big Bear in the 60s 70s and 80s and they said that most of the Town even with the big homes were full of just welfare people and the people that had business businesses like their families, where the middle income families, which wasn't very much cuz there's not a lot of businesses there.
Big Bear today it's surrounded with too many of the new communities or old ones with new homes so it makes it unbearable to drive up there on the weekends and holidays. I try to ski locally just during the week when possible to avoid all the crowds from Dana Point.

    Beautiful
I have a suggestion since you live near tennessee and like exploring... Drive through a specific, fairly large county. Not a particular county... With fairly bad crime that involves powdery substance. No specific substance. And has an area with very windy roads in the main town and the road has a fitting name, and it has a good appalachian mountain view. The ghetto area is in between downtown and a... certain interstate. Please consider it :D and if you do and get the town right i will praise you for eternity but not tell you if you got it right or not. I know its a 99% chance you wont but if you ever happen to be in east tennessee be nice and do please :)

I realize this is non-related, but I wish I'd thought to have tipped you 18 plus months ago about a common but funny scene that transpires here in Delaware, during the warmer months especially: Which is watching girls from New Jersey between the ages of 16 and 25 trying to figure out how to put gasoline in their cars. No such thing as self-service gas stations in New Jersey and pretty much no such thing as full-service gas stations here in Delaware. Of course, since chivalry still remains to some degree, especially if the Jersey girls standing by the gas pumps looking clueless happen to be cute.
