So I bought the Penguin Pro 375 a couple months ago which is basically the same design minus the spray bar for the biowheels and the flow rate. Anyway, it sucks and I can't wait until I replace it. Like others have said, the large prefilter sponge from Aquarium Coop is perfect for this filter. It is what I use and doesn't clog up, it's just there to get the really large particles before being polished by the filters inside. On mine, where the impeller housing snaps together, it barely snaps in and I'm constantly worried it's going to fall off and suck up a fish which a lot of others have had that same issue. I use my own filters/media in it, and of course, the biowheels don't spin. And as soon as the filters start to get a little debris, it just pours water over the overflow, which I suppose is better than going out the back of the filter. I literally just cleaned all my filters last night and it's already overflowing today. Hopefully my comment helps someone and I can't wait to get away from Marineland. Enjoyed the video though!

I've never been a great fan of the Emperor filters, but I think the source of the flow problem is the pre-filter sponge: its pores are too fine. I had a similar problem on my Aquaclears that I fixed by getting some "medium" porosity sponges from Aquarium Co-Op. Helathy snack: a pear and some salted cashews.
Aqua clear is still the work horse in the field. Add silicone gel to the impeller shaft and it starts every time, plus you don’t need cartridges that cost money. With guppies you can’t use a tidal filter because of the skimmer inlet slots . So again aquaclear wins!!
@@MichaelsFishRoom For me, the only way to make Aqua Clear better is to make the AC110 a double wide filter for bigger tanks, with 2 × foam etc. Something similar to the other freaky filters on the market. Maybe the AC70 as well.
I appreciate your final review of the 450. My opinion, however, is that I would not blame the filter for the intake sponge issue. "I" think that the pores in the sponge are much too fine for that much flow and that heavy stocked tank. I would use a courser sponge. (I've had the same happen with other power filter types) I believe you said it in the video, such as Aquarium Co-op's. So I'd disregard that one issue as a filter problem. Other issues such as glass lid is a different story. Thanks! Great job!
Thanks for watching! The issue I have is that is the intake sponge designed for that filter by the manufacturer. BTW, I will be updating this issue soon since I am testing the co cp intake sponge now.
@@MichaelsFishRoom maybe the filter was designed by someone who doesn't have a fish tank! It could be a simple fix for the manufacturer though. Great review though Mike!
It is a simple filter and always restarted for me when shut off. Sand substrate might abrade the impeller shaft of time but I use crushed coral. I always add silicone gel to the impeller shaft and recently checked the shaft after two years of usage and it was brand new. I have found the basket can float when the filter clogs but that my fault because I use an aftermarket thinner sponge to allow more media. It’s a great hobby and I wish more of today’s kids would get involved. Regards
@Weenie Hut Jr's how much media are you packing in it and what are you using as a standard to measure pump flow. Remove the basket completely then check your flow. They are simple filters and the field windings (motor)and impeller need to be removed for cleaning sludge builds up in there. Good luck !!
Ps. The motor field windings do get old over time but that would be in ten years . Check for voltage spikes in you house current. Your appliances may benefit also.
I love aquaclears a lot, for your intake it would be interesting to see a course sponge vs fine sponge if it still clogged, ps loved the albino looking pond snail chilling at the end of the video never seen one that color

I'd of thought it would be obvious that sponge would be way to small I'd stack 2 of the massive sponge filters you have together and make them fit or 3 or 4 of them around the tank all plumbed together and I'd definitely not open the top inlet in a tank with live baring fish the fry will head straight for it and get smushed
Its NOT the intake filter's fault and its certainly not the Pro 450's fault. Dont filter the intake with such a dense sponge and dont filter at all accept in a guppy or tetra tank. Let the *actual filter* do its job! Plus - That particular sponge is obviously much too dense.
I put an 8"x4" 20ppi pond intake pre filter on mine. Its a heavily stocked tank and it takes several months before it starts to slow down flow down. You could probably even say it'd last over a year. I think the ppi of your sponge fliter might be too high for that amount of flow and debris. Cool heaters, I'm gonna check those out! I think this is the one I bought. www.chewy.com/tetra-prefilter-fk3-replacement/dp/126100?Tetra& The tiniest fry "might" be able to get in the surface of the sponge, but there seems to be enough surface area, that theres not enough currant pulling to keep them held in it.
You are constantly asking what you like and dislike about it as if there's a balance. Well ... dislike category, the fire? I sell these things and this is the worst hang-on ever created for all the reasons you mentioned, but seemed not super concerned about.

I replaced them all with Aquaclear filters. They didn't treat me near as well when I contacted them but then again I don't have a popular TH-cam channel. They seem to love to tell people that it is a freak occcurance and that they have never seen this happen.. Owners of this filter please be careful.
@@MichaelsFishRoom Unfortunately. Thank goodness my wife has been working from home due to Covid and caught them before anything else caught on fire. I've been keeping fish for over 30 years and had a some water leaks but never a fire. I use the Aquaclear 110's now and so far have had no issues.
The tank is a mess and more like a dirty pond. I have this filter on a 65 gallon which is a taller 55 gallon tank. As a result the intake spong that marine land makes has the pick up tube higher in the sponge. As a result you utilize more surface area. Generally, the filter is still outdated due to limited media holding limits. In the 80s a company made media baskets that top filled. This is a much better design. The clam shell baskets are very limited especially when listed for a 90 gallon tank.
@@MichaelsFishRoom yes but the cover don’t fit now and you have to keep looking for when the pads are loaded. Years ago they had a tiny window to show if the wheels are rotating. It’s old news in a new box. However marine land makes the best tanks!
Probably it's too much gunk and debris....it's gunked up with rotting plants, not detritus...... It's like you threw in the trimmings from your lawn mower :))....No filter is going to cope with that.

@@MichaelsFishRoom check yourself on when you use the round polishing filter I think you can’t leave the basket in place . Regards .
Aqua Clear rocks!
Sure does!
Hi Mike will a pet store take endlers from me I have a lot of them
I don't know, ask a pet store.
Great stuff as always. What is the background music to the underwater footage?
Just some free music from Final Cut.
Needs a more course intake sponge I guess
You are correct!
@@MichaelsFishRoom maybe the filter was designed by someone who doesn't have a fish tank! It could be a simple fix for the manufacturer though. Great review though Mike!
There is an awful amount of debris in the water. is that maybe why it plugs up so quickly?
Yes Captain, that is why. But, as you know it is a filter.....
I’ve tried alot and personally I am still an aquaclear 110 fan boy.......
@Weenie Hut Jr's sounds like you got a defective batch I would contact the company they are pretty good on issues. Good luck with your issue.
One extra thought are the plates above the impeller seated right or possibly upside down
I love aquaclears a lot, for your intake it would be interesting to see a course sponge vs fine sponge if it still clogged, ps loved the albino looking pond snail chilling at the end of the video never seen one that color
I have one on order!
Been trying to get healthier / lose weight, so . . .1/4 cup peanuts is my go to snack. Always drink ice water with lemon. Get bored of plain water so I spruce that up with lemon or lime.
My wife is the same way with the water.
Personally I don't like any hang on back filters. I either have canister or sponge filters. I've bought bigger and more course sponges when I had a hang on back filter. I think the sponge is too small.
Thanks for sharing
cant buy here.... but! im commenting for the algorithm
LOL...thanks!
Healthy snack, raw cucumber. Healthy beverage, celery juice.
I just threw up a little in my mouth.....celery juice? Why?
@@MichaelsFishRoom Celery is very high in magnesium and iron content. It is as a food for the blood cells. It is high in natural sodium which is one of the important elements to help eliminate carbon dioxide from our system.
@@MichaelsFishRoom Cucumber and its juice gives you elements which help in rheumatic aliments and in helping conditions of high and low blood pressure. Also helps in preventing the splitting of the nails and falling out of the hair.
Any filter will clog . Especially with good suction . U need less ppi sponge if you’re going to use one .
Yup
I'd of thought it would be obvious that sponge would be way to small I'd stack 2 of the massive sponge filters you have together and make them fit or 3 or 4 of them around the tank all plumbed together and I'd definitely not open the top inlet in a tank with live baring fish the fry will head straight for it and get smushed
True, true.
Raw carrots and cauliflower with low cal ranch dip, Crystallite

Good luck for more Subscriber how are you
Thanks HoC. I am doing OK!
Intake sponge is to fine . Try a corse sponge and your problem should be solved
Got one on order.
Did Marineland investigation report back NTF or NFF? Just curious. Cheers. p.s. eating Pecans. Good healthy fat.
Unable to duplicate....from the report they gave, it seemed like really tried.
I drink a lot of water and favorite snack is cheese
What kind of cheese?
@@MichaelsFishRoom i like sharp cheddar but just a small piece

It's just my good looks.....
Life cereal diet Dr. Pepper. It is breakfast for me
Pepsi and sour cream and onion potato chips
I miss soda.......
You need a more pores sponge.
Why?
Its NOT the intake filter's fault and its certainly not the Pro 450's fault. Dont filter the intake with such a dense sponge and dont filter at all accept in a guppy or tetra tank. Let the *actual filter* do its job! Plus - That particular sponge is obviously much too dense.
OK
👍
😎
my snack choice is unhealthy, i am eating pumpkin with cinnamon and syrup
It's OK, I forgive you.
I think this is the one I bought.
www.chewy.com/tetra-prefilter-fk3-replacement/dp/126100?Tetra&
The tiniest fry "might" be able to get in the surface of the sponge, but there seems to be enough surface area, that theres not enough currant pulling to keep them held in it.
I have an update comming!
Cashews & water. Thanks as always for the honesty.
Love Cashews! Thanks for watching!

Sucks that you are having bad luck with these things the one I bought has ben working perfectly :/
Awesome!
Bro that’s a 90 g tank but way overstocked with all that plant matter
Plants don't overstock a tank.
@@MichaelsFishRoom look at that stuff floating around, it excessive.
@@sam3d so you think too many plants is a bad thing?
@@MichaelsFishRoom yes, when the water looks full of floating debris.
You are constantly asking what you like and dislike about it as if there's a balance. Well ... dislike category, the fire? I sell these things and this is the worst hang-on ever created for all the reasons you mentioned, but seemed not super concerned about.
Why do you sell it then?
Buyer beware. I loved that filter and had them on 12 of my tanks. I had one catch on fire in June. I wrote is off as a freak occurrence. I had another one do the same thing in September. I replaced them all with Aquaclear filters. They didn't treat me near as well when I contacted them but then again I don't have a popular TH-cam channel. They seem to love to tell people that it is a freak occcurance and that they have never seen this happen.. Owners of this filter please be careful.
You had 2 of the marineland pro 450 catch fire?
It can be modified correctly with some backwards engineering.
@@MichaelsFishRoom yes but the cover don’t fit now and you have to keep looking for when the pads are loaded. Years ago they had a tiny window to show if the wheels are rotating. It’s old news in a new box. However marine land makes the best tanks!
AquaClear best
I concur
Probably it's too much gunk and debris....it's gunked up with rotting plants, not detritus......
It's like you threw in the trimmings from your lawn mower :))....No filter is going to cope with that.
Yeah, the grass trimmings may have been a mistake.

Aquaclear all the way. been using Aquaclear for over 15 plus years.
I concur
C'mon Michael, I find it hard to believe you badmouth the filter only because you installed a fine sponge on the intake. Everyone knows you need to install a coarse sponge and Voilà, it wouldn't clog. A big face palm for you!!!
Bad mouth? You spelled honest wrong.
Whether or not that word is misspelled, is not the point tho.
