At Charles Town Racetrack, WV, about 20 years ago at a bachelor party we watched a race and a horse broke his leg, threw the rider, and it was fucking brutal. It was literally hanging off of him it was flipping out and thrashing and screaming. People were crying, they started to clear out the stands and you could see them bringing out the captive bolt.
What if we start regularly putting fake casts on horses when they are young so that they get used to them and don't freak out if they have to wear one for real when they're older.
No its that usually it's not likely to heal properly, causing them more pain, and thus really wasting money. The point of healing is to try to lessen the pain, not make it worse. It's quite literally putting them out of their misery-money that's only likely to get worse
The issue comes when the horse has to go in a sling. The weight is transferred to the sling parts and the pressure causes problems around the belly. Also, it turns out that if they can not move around during the recovery they fail to thrive.
I feel like this question is null and void. Theyre horses. Their legs are as big as my thigh. You cant make a horse not walk during healing. It almost drove me to insanity breaking my ankle. It affected me similarly, i struggled to adjust to it. It sent me into a deep depressive episode and a state of constant misery because i couldnt move. Imagine if a dinosaur broke a bone. You think. T rex would recover from a broken leg? Nah dude. Some animals are too instinctually to withstain an injury and take the rest because they dont know what resting because your bone is broken looks like, much less understand it.
@@erikm8707 You are forcing them to do something they wouldn't naturally do in the wild, so having a horse race and pushing them to their limits is abuse
It’s the nature/nurture of what happens. Yes granted it’s mostly done for the ones domesticated, but watch the wild horses. Before we go bashing what we do, take a look into what horses do in the wild. However, we can help them heal, but no matter what, it usually boils down to money. The other horse channel described how they have to be treated in a completely different way. Years ago, when we heavily used them for travel, they would not go to waste when one had to be put down.
you cuold probably train it with something like a big watch and hav eit not kick it off when its in its stable just incase you need to apply a leg brace
They can't be healed because they need to move all the time to deal with the blood pressure and so there is no time to hold them still till the leg will be fixed. If you can hold the horse still small peace's of leg's bone gonna stuck in veins and horse would die plainly. So only a few horses can be saved even nowadays with sucj injures
The issue is the horse thinks there’s something wrong because of pain the pain will make the horse run those like will get worse it will only die trying to escape it’s on pain
well i'm not a veterinarian and i dont know anything about horses, but if it's not a fracture then it probably wont require a cast, and they probably wont do more damage by merely walking, so i would speculate that a cut shouldnt be enough to force you to kill your horse.
Even worse ,since a horse body weight is so high , it gets distributed to all 4 of its legs to get good balance , if its cut then the horse wont be able to walk/run since it needs all 4 members and no even a leg replacment wont help either (most of the time) horses are very delicate and sensetive animals i dont think they will just accept a fake leg with ease
It would depend. A small cut is usually not an issue. However, any cut near the leg bones can be dangerous if it becomes infected. Also, the horse needs to put weight down evenly, so any cut that makes them not put full weight down can call laminitis in the other legs.
Technical the horse is put down not because the leg won't healt but because the horse won't be able to perform as expected anymore. So the life is unnecessary taken over idiotic tradition
many times the leg won't heal because a fracture under 1200lbs of pressure going 40mph literally turns the bone into confetti. You can't put a cast on a puddle of mush like that is going to do anything. And horses can't just stand on three legs all the time at their weight.
@@e.t.2914 Titanium screws and rods works on all animals. But that horse aint gonna run in money anymore, so it has served it's purpose. @@benghazi4216 In many cases yes rods and pins can work just fine. The problem with horses comes down to their literal anatomy. Injuries below their "knees" tend to heel poorly because there is hardly any muscle tissue, its just tendons---meaning very little blood flow for healing purposes. The problem with injuries that occur at high speeds is that the bone literally explodes under the force of thousands of pounds of pressure----you can not put pins in bones that no longer exist.

I always wondered why they can't use medicine. But it makes sense that a horse will likely never heal, because they are so big. Even with a massive suspension harness, the leg won't ever be the same; still takes months, cost a fortune.

You don't understand how horses work. Their anatomy and their behavior won't allow them to just lie down on the ground for their broken foot to heal. They need to be standing and walking around or else, they're gonna freak out and start thrashing which is gonna cause additional injuries to their body. Not to mention the fact that a horse's bone is basically the equivalent of a wine glass in a sense that when it breaks, it shatters into many pieces that makes it nearly impossible to put it together in its original form. This is the most bulshit I've ever heard they'll freak out cuz their leg is in a cast so they've never had a boot on or anything they've never had shipping boots on really. If they rest to heal then they can’t really breath because the weight of the horse’s lungs are to heavy when sitting but if the fracture is not bad enough they can put the horse on a scaffold to heal and breathe well
