This is what we call "opera painting" in costuming. Sometimes it's on a mask, but it could also be on a coat, skirt, or hat. It isn't meant to be seen closely, but from even a small distance, it looks wonderful. This is one of my favorite things to do within costuming.
I can relate. I paint lions and big cats on canvases and pupils are the hardest part. When you mention them having crossed eyes, it made me think of this old movie called "Clarence the Cross Eyed Lion". Are you going to do any other Lion King characters such at Timon the meerkat? I'd LOVE to see how this school is going to portray him and or just how to make a paper mache meerkat in general since meerkats are my favorite thing in life.
I do hope to make a meerkat, and a wart hog - and I want to redesign my hyena mask, too. But first I have to paint my house. A meerkat would be so much more fun!
I don't think I had the camera turned on when I painted them. I used a pre-mixed yellow-tan for the larger portions of the faces, and then added a little white for lighter spots around the muzzle and eyes, and some burnt umber for the shadows behind the muzzle and inside the ears. I didn't get carried away with details because they'll be seen from a distance.
