    In this episode of Hiking News, we delve into some of the most compelling updates in the outdoor and tech world. First, there are significant leaks about the Garmin Phoenix 8. A private page on the Garmin website was accidentally indexed by Google, revealing that the new Phoenix 8 will feature an AMOLED screen, combining the best aspects of the Phoenix and Epix series. This suggests a move towards more versatile and high-performance hiking watches that cater to various user preferences.
    Additionally, we discuss Google's upcoming announcement of the Pixel 9, which is expected to include satellite connectivity. This new feature could revolutionize how hikers and outdoor enthusiasts stay connected in remote areas, providing an essential safety net for those venturing off the grid. The integration of satellite technology in smartphones could be a game-changer for navigation and emergency communication.
    In more somber news, we cover a disturbing incident at Yellowstone National Park, where a potential mass shooting was averted. This highlights the importance of staying vigilant and informed about safety issues while enjoying national parks. The episode also touches on the tragic events involving park rangers and wildlife, emphasizing the need for responsible behavior in natural settings to preserve both human and animal lives.
    Stay tuned for these updates and more, including insights into new features for popular hiking apps and tools, as well as critical information about forest fires affecting trails on the West Coast. Make sure to subscribe for the latest news and tips to enhance your hiking adventures.

Speaking of stupidity, I'm really tired of people thinking that wildlands are Disneyland. Go to a freakin amusement park if that's what you want, a national park is NOT that. LOL

    An app for forest fires must be the Watch Duty app, the newest update integrates the ALERT camera network. The only problem is that out on the trails you often don't have service. One of my concerns is getting caught behind a fire line of a fire that started after you started hiking.

      @@Hikingguy Hey just an FYI, there are better options for Idaho than the peak you've selected! I'm very familiar with the Idaho 12/11/10ers and you don't have to select something so far down the elevation list. I would lista couple suggestions here but I'm a bit confused as to your selection criteria.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@maxwellerickson7066 Awesome, thank you for your help. I've gotten some conflicting info about Idaho. Let me know what you have. The criteria is here (also a sheet in the spreadsheet):
      The hike has to be on a class 1 trail. No mountaineering, scrambling, or off-trail route-finding for at least some part of the year.
      Ideally the trail is named and maintained by official sources.
      Hike is to the highest summit possible. A high altitude hike that doesn't include a summit does not count.
      The hike has to be on public land.
      There has to be some movement of the legs involved. No drive-ups.

    • @maxwellerickson7066
      @maxwellerickson7066 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Hikingguy Sure thing -- those are definitely some restrictive criteria for Idaho, which might have the least developed mountainous terrain in the lower 48. Class 1 is entirely doable, as is public land, but the "maintained traail" requirement is trickier -- Derek Percoski, who has summited every 11er in the state, reports that not a single one has a currently maintained hiking trail to the top.
      That said, there are definitely other options. Peak 10288 (Annies Peak) is in the right area -- this portion of the northern Lemhis tends to have some higher sections with class 1 summits. I would take a look at Iron Creek Point (10,740'), which is nearby -- there's an old desigated pack trail that goes straight to the class 1 summit. As far as I'm aware, it's no longer maintained, but it's still class 1 and would require essentially zero routefinding.
      Other good options would include the south approach to Inyo Benchmark (10,614'), also in the northern Lemhis -- LOJ has it as being class 2, but the Rick Baugher approach should get you there with minimal routefinding, as you'll be following an old Jeep track until you get above treeline. The only real obstacle for this one is a small ford near the beginning and the length of the approach... roughly 8 miles one way.
      Outside of this area, Cache Peak (10,339') is the highest peak in southern ID and is regarded my some (me) as class 1... but it might be stretching your criterion regarding routefinding. Essentially, it's very easy to follow a maintained trail up to a high saddle, and from then on there is a relatively easy route following climber's trails all the way to the summit with no bushwhacking, but most people stick too closely to the south part of the saddle and end up in thick tree cover (and a boulder field). For the correct, class 1 route, see Rob Woodall's trip report & GPX track on Peakbagger. If you really want to minimize routefinding, I would recommend this as a winter snowshoe hike, which would be a great workout and is a fairly popular way to summit this peak. This option also helps ensure that you don't take a wrong turn, as you get more visibility.
      Let me know if one of these ends up working for you! If not, I'll keep brainstorming and see if I can't think of other options. I suspect there may be other options in the Lemhis and potentially the White Clouds.

    HG great content and a huge amount of useful information. Your videos were a huge assistance in my updating to a Garmin GPSMAP 67i . I wanted to integrate InReach and GPS into one device and have data collection for my hunting and overlanding activities being able to be saved into one program.
    But I have run into one issue that you may able to do a video on.
    New South Wales (Australia), Department of Primary Industry manages hunting access in State Forest here. You must book in and carry their current maps, largely to stay clear of active logging and forestry activities and for numbers management. Yet, it appears with Garmin's change to MTP from USB Mass Storage the .kmz files DPI uses, wont upload.
    Am I missing something.
    Keep the great information coming.

      The Epix is a friggin Fenix with an AMOLED screen. It's the same watch other than the screen. That's why they're getting rid of the Epix branding and just going to do a MIP and AMOLED Fenix 8.
