Thank you very much Sarah! The wood is still a little wet, so I'm going to hang on to it for a few weeks. I was going to sell it but I would to make sure it doesn't crack. I'll let you know when it's really, before I put it up on Etsy.
I found it helpful to see how you changed gears, and the finished platter is beautiful. Seeing how you modified the bottom to be more platter shaped was really interesting. I also liked the camera work your wife did.
MY NAME HERE!!! Awesome platter! Your TH-cam videos are what got me into woodturning, Carl, and I look forward to each new one! Thanks for being an inspiration to me and everyone else!
MY NAME HERE! Fantastic job Carl. This turning is what separates you from others. We as turners need to listen what the wood is telling us. The wood is in control.
MY NAME HERE. Great job Carl. Beautiful piece of wood that looks awesome. Glad you went with the platter instead of the bowl, I think you did it justice pretty well that way.
I think you made the right choice with a platter rather than the bowl. It really did turn into a very pretty Food safe platter. The coloration and grain are so interesting. Thank you for sharing 😀
I put it on my calendar. My friend's think I'm weird because I'm so excited about it. This was another great piece of wood. It's fortunate it made it to your hands so it could become a great piece of art as well.
That’s a beautiful platter, Carl. What a gorgeous piece of wood. Nice design change...crotch never seems to go deep enough and it would have been a great shame to have lost this. Cheers!
Hey Carl, what a fantastic way to get the most out of that beautiful piece of wood. Plus I really loved your platter and seeing the finish go the wood grain was absolutely stunning. Looking forward to next time, keep on turning. 📐💜📐
MY NAME HERE: I find it Interesting that I got an ad for a Manscaped product and you're turning a 'crotch' wood platter. That's a beautiful platter Carl.
The irony! I was in Las Vegas on vacation and missed this video until I got home, which is now too late to enter. :) Beautiful platter! Hope to meet you out there one day.
Well body very nice job. I wonder if you can carry anything on that platter without sliding off it. but since you have that edge had shaped you may want to route a lip so things won't drop off should you need to move the platter. by the you broke my heart with that beautiful wood. Youlknow those things won't grow down here in south Texas
@@CarlJacobson Sorry buddy I may have spoken too quickly. It's hard to see it in the video. Carl, I wonder if you still have my phone number if you could call me please?
Good save on the project and it turned out awesome. After letting it set in the mineral oil for a couple of day do you wipe it off and let if fully dry or do you do some buffing? I was able to score a nice walnut cutoff from a local guy with a sawmill. I did a quick search and when your video popped up I knew I would get a good idea how to get a good result.
My name here! Beautiful camera work! Edit: but don’t put me in draw I can’t go. Sorry, I thought it was a draw for the platter. Lol rewatched and listened instead of just watching the turning work. I get very into the work.
After you apply the mineral oil, I normally use a beeswax food safe finish but sometimes I notice the oil kinda bleeds out. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong?
Hey Adam, you're not doing anything wrong. The mineral oil will bleed out for a week or so. You can wait to put the mineral oil on but it really doesn't matter the oil will come out either way.
Great job Carl. Two questions: Can the leftover mineral oil be bottled and reused for other pieces? and is the adapter you used to stand the jaw chuck upright sold over the counter, or did you make it yourself? Once again,.... great work!
Thank you Tony! There's on need to boil the mineral oil it can just be reused. Here's a link to the chuck mount trentboschtools.com/product/trent-bosch-versatile-carving-stand-1-14-x-8-tpi/
Carl you are a mentor to me. I am currently making a my master piece for 2019 and I am going to dedicate it to you. It’s called : the Reactor, a mix of wood and electronics. Oh,... and,... as usual I LOOOOOOOOOOVE what you make, this plater is MAGNIFICENT !!!
Fantastic job Carl, unfortunately i cant turn because someone stole all my lathe tools when they stole my saw and i just havent been able to get them replaced yet take care my friend
I don't think so. My neighbor has a woodshop but he doesn't have a lathe. I spent about 2.5 hours with him working on the cone. It was made with a makeshift belt sander jig from an octagonal prism. Why did I want a cone made? Because I wanted a cone. I'm thinking a wooden cone could be made much quicker with a lathe than a makeshift belt sander setup.
Hi Carl! Thanks for all the videos. I'm a new woodturner (since December) and have learned a lot from you. Are you going to stay in Boise though the 16th and 17th for the "Idaho Artistry In Wood" show? It's hard to tell how good it might be. Their web site (www.idahoartistryinwood.net/) doesn't have a lot of info yet, but it seems like the thing might be more of an art show with a few demonstrations than a woodworking / woodturning conference. I might see you at the Boise Woodcraft. I live in the Bay Area but have friends in Boise who I visit a lot, and I might be there in March.
Thank you Laura! I wish we could stay for the Artistry In Wood show, but we have to come back for the Oregon Woodturning Symposium. It looks like a fun event maybe next year.
It's not very round and you put two hole's in it 😦 . Not sure about this one lol . Man that's a beautiful piece of wood . You did it justice take care .

Slight design change on this project! I started out making a bowl, and ended up with a platter.
Is this available for purchase? I'm just in LOVE with it! Absolutely in love!

Thank you Larry! Yes after the mineral oil bath, just wipe it off and let it dry.
Hi Carl, where can I get the chuck holding jig you used in your banjo to do some of the carving & sanding on the platter? Thanks.

Scratch that...found in previous comments. AWESOME WORK!!!

Thank you Chris!! Yes it's mineral oil, probably only needs to be reapplied few times a year.

Let me now when you get close to Florida.
Where can I get wood for bowl turning.
I get a lot of wood off Craigslist. Woodcraft also sells bowl blanks.
It is awesome I love it wow.
Thank you Kobie!
How long have you been woodturning?
23 years
Super cool

Could you turn a cone?
Is it for something specific?
