A very good explanation of the mechanics! I would conditionally disagree with your statement of not worrying too much about non-combat probes, though. Especially if you're in j-space & as an example, let's say you're huffing gas in a Prospect and there's only 1 gas site in the system: it's just as likely that an Astero, Stratios or stealth bomber is using core/sister scanner probes to scan the sigs as any other type of ship, and once they scan that single gas site, they're going to immediately know where you are (in all likelihood; based on your ship) and can warp to your location. Sure, you have some time to prepare & warp off etc, but if you're in any type of site (sig) where it's "one of a kind" in the system, the safest action is to immediately dock up/cloak/warp off. This goes double for anomalies in my opinion - not only because they don't have to be scanned down of course, but because it's an early warning notice (again, being j-space specific here) that someone is in system.
Oh 100% agreed and I probably could be clearer here. This was intended to essentially help those folks out mining etc in K-Space. In my Wormhole Survival series I do espouse the need to keep an eye on everything but very good points to raise!

That "asteroid belt" you were scanning in the cone had a bunch of other celestial objects "tightly" packed together: 5 moons, 1 planet, 3 stations, and 1 asteroid belt all in one spot. So that mobile depot could have been at any of those though the asteroid belt is a likely place, it also could have been at one of the moons for some sort of moon mining reason.
