The complexity of qual research that seeks to identify patterns and themes related to theory, whilst recognising individual experiences of the thing I am studying, seems to complicate my sense of which paradigm is most appropriate for my research.
Great question! Post-positivism is often seen as a bridge between positivism and interpretivism. It recognises that even though we can study the world in an objective way, our understanding is always somewhat imperfect and influenced by our existing ideas and theories, which is a step away from the more strict approach of traditional positivism. It’s understandable to feel confused with the overlap between paradigms-research is complex, and paradigms are not always neatly separated. Ultimately, the choice of paradigm should align with your research questions and how you view the nature of reality and knowledge. Remember to take your time in finding the right fit! If you're looking for more detailed guidance, I highly recommend the book, "Social Research: Paradigms in Action" by Norman Blaikie and Jan Priest -it offers a clear overview of different research paradigms and might help clarify some of the complexities you're facing.
