    1) Start off by teaching leash pressure.
    2) Pick up a swim vest for your pup.
    3) Get in the pool and use the leash pressure to help the dog get into the pool by the steps. You can also carry the dog into the pool. Remember, you want to make the experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
    4) Once the dog is comfortable getting into the pool, then you will assist from outside of the pool using the leash pressure. First by the steps and then all other surrounding locations.
    5) Now we can start playing with our dogs in the pool. If they seem like they are doing well with the vest, you can now take the vest off and have them swim without the additional gear.
    6) Final note; If you ever want to take your dog paddle-boarding, or swimming in a lake, basically anywhere with deep water. Always have a vest of your dog, no matter how good of a swimmer your dog is.

    Sometimes it helps to get that dog wet before introducing him to the pool. It reduces the strange feeling of gradually getting wet in dogs that are little more unsure. Our girl fell of waterfall when she was 3 months old. Getting her wet before we asked her ho follow us into the water made a huge difference.

I did hold them at first under their belly & showed them the way out of our pool..did this when they were 8 weeks old.I now take them to a place called doggie beach to swim in the creek water..Some breeds like a Dachshund (do not like to swim.)It is all in the breed..some breeds should not be put in the position to have to swim! People should do their research about the breed before they think all dogs like to swim!.Some dogs only paddle to save their lives & are fearful of water!!(SHOUT OUT from TEAM ROTTIE) ! :)

      Yep, learnt my rottie could swim but not in a situation I could control. We were at the park at night like usual but this time a duck came over and teased him then flew off into the darkness. My rottie followed it and I couldn't find him for about 20 mins because rotties at night are basically impossible to see. Luckily the reflection from his eyes made me find him in the DEEP CANAL 😳 It was a cold December night so me going in would be suicide. Had to call the fire department to get him out. He was likely there for over an hour. He literally could have drowned with me never finding him but luckily he swam on his first ever encounter

    Big question is- how do you get them to only go into the pool when you say so? I want to teach our dogs to swim, we have a pool in the back yard. This is the yard they all do their free play in and run around, bathroom time, all that. So I haven’t tried to reach any of them yet because I don’t want them to run into the pool whenever they feel like it. We had a visiting dog once and he could swim (he was a lab) but also would only go in when he was given the ‘ok’ to go…very well trained.

    I just got finished watching 2 of ur videos after it was randomly recommended to me by TH-cam. I’m interested in getting a yorkie or Maltese puppy next year. If I do I will be a 1st time dog owner. However, there are a few behaviors I don’t like and that’s what’s prevented me from getting a dog in the past. I tried to look on TH-cam, but I haven’t really found anyone who has answered my questions. Therefore, I have a few questions. 1) Can a dog be trained to potty outside and inside the house in possibly the same spots or would this confuse the dog. For example, if an owner doesn’t make it home in time to let the dog out to use the bathroom they won’t potty all over the house they will just potty in one particular spot in the house. 2) Is it a good idea to teach a dog to use the toilet. 3) Can a dog be taught not to bark. For example if ur not home u don’t want the dog to be constantly barking because the neighbors will complain. 4) Can the dog be taught not to lick you and ur face? 5) Can it be taught not to jump on people, or hump peoples leg when they enter the room? 6) Can the dog be taught not to bite on and destroy furniture? 7) Can the dog be taught to be protective over me and my loved ones even though it’s a very small dog.These are all the behaviors I was trying to check on to make sure it could be accomplished b4 I purchased a dog. Because I live with someone who hates animals. So the more we’ll behaved the dog is the more accepting they will be toward me getting and keeping the dog. I was also thinking since everything I want to train the dog to do is it’s natural behavior would it be better to train the dog to be somewhat like a service dog?

    The water completely freaks my dog out. She's a 60lb Malinois, so holding her and letting he down gently into the pool would be impossible as she's extremely strong and agile. I do have a shelf in the pool I can likely get her into with leash pressure that's about 8 inches deep. And 4x8 ft wide. Any advice on what I should try next? Thank you!

    • @douglasazo
      @douglasazo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can start by having one person in the pool and another outside (or you can do it by yourself but get in and out - that's what I did and she was 50+ lbs) Pull the dog into the pool and then guide the dog out to the stairs or the shallow end. Repeat at different locations around the pool facing different directions. Show them that no matter what, they can find their way out.
      You can get over the shock of the entry by getting the dog into the shallow end first and trying from there. (This did not work for me. My dog wanted nothing to do with the shallow end, deep end, nothing.). I had to go the old fashion way, from the edge but I had my son make sure she didn't weasel out of it and I would calm her in the water. Trim claws first BTW if you choose this method.
      She loves the water now and plays with the kids. Good luck, you can do it!

    Hi Nate:) I have a new 2 month old GS puppy. I am following your advices and he is super clever, motivated and cooperative. He loves training/playing time!!!! Yesterday, I called a proffessional trainer here in greece with years of experience and he told me to stop training him (sit,down,stay [or in our case FREE] etc) until he is 6 months old because otherwise I will pressure him and he will be stubborn later. Is this accurate? Should I stop training my puppy? I was training my puppy according to your videos and he is doing an amazing job/progress... Now I am scared that I will pressure him... What's your opinion?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi VK, The absolute most important time to train a dog is when they are a puppy, more specifically the first 16 weeks of the dog's life. That is the imprinting age. All competitive, working, and professional dog trainers start when the puppy is 8 weeks of age. I would recommend finding a different local dog trainer. Just be sure to make the training fun and your dog will always love training, just like my two dogs Arih and Charlie. You can see in every video how much they love to train and I started both of them at 8 weeks of age. I hope that helps and thanks for supporting my channel: th-cam.com/video/OvdKDE326gs/w-d-xo.html

    How do you teach your dog not to drink the water they’re swimming in, being fresh water or salt water? My lab loves swimming but he has the habit of drinking from the body water even though we provide him with clean water to drink

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very common. Here's a section from my dog training manual that may be helpful.
      Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this:
      • One: Preventing the dog from practicing the undesired behavior.
      • Two: Using a correction to stop the behavior.
      A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So, in the end, the 58 motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior.
      If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept: Imagine every dog has a bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether.
      This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act.
      In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear.
      You can get a copy of my manual here: amzn.to/2P2tyQH

    Do you you have any tips on how to make a puppy more comfortable in a bath? I've had to give my new puppy a couple baths already and she really doesn't like it. It's easy to keep her in the sink since she's so small but it would be awesome if I could get her used to it before she's big and hard to hold!!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I make the bathtub a pleasant place for the pup before they ever get a bath. Meaning, I will take the pup to the bath tub and treat it as a command. Once the dog is in the bathtub, I mark and reward. Then I release the pup without ever turning on the water. I continue to do that for a little while, maybe a week or so. Then I'll have the pup in the bathtub and I'll turn the water on a low setting, but I won't get the pup wet. I want to get them comfortable with the sound and look of the water being on. Next, I'll get the pup a little wet and I'll mark and reward. As the pup becomes more and more comfortable with the bath, then I'll actually give the dog a bath. This takes some time, but it prevents having bathing issues as the dog gets older. I hope that help. :)

    Can dogs with docked tails learn to swim well like this? When we brought our dog home she already had a docked tail. She goes vertical just like you were talking about as soon as she is in the pool…

    So my 1 year old lab only swims with her front legs. Keeps her back legs tucked up against her body. How do i teach her to use all four legs?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try holding her in place until she uses her back legs, once she does reward her by allowing her to swim forward. However, if she swims without any issues, then I wouldn't worry about it.

    are dog saw our friend's dog jump in our lake after a ball so she just ran off the dock and learned how to swim

      Lol! Yes, some are fast learners. The lab in this video was swimming within the first minute he saw the pool.

      Each dog is going to have a unique personality, but the science to dog training is always the same. What varies between dogs is things like intelligence, motivation, perseverance, etc.

      Thanks! You would have to help them out of the pool. However, If I had dogs and a pool, I would either make sure they can't get to the pool when no one is there to watch them or I would make sure they can get out of the pool if they were to fall in. :)

    Don't they automatically know how to swim? We never taught our dog but he went in the lake and the pool and he knew how.

    • @justagirlandherdogs615

      Depends on the breed and temperment of the dog. Just because our one dog was able to do this doesn’t mean all dogs can. For Instance... my clients that are labs and GSPs always was able to jump in no matter what. All other dogs that aren’t GSPs or labs had a hard time and I had to get in the water to help them

    Why does your dog need a life vest

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always like to start with the vest because it helps build the dogs confidence and it helps with the dogs learning process. Once fully trained then the vest is no longer needed. However, if you are ever swimming your dog in a lake or the ocean, then you should have a vest on them. This is for safety. :)
