Brilliant, beautiful ever-ve scent Jane Powell. Jimmy Durante makes me laugh and sing just thinking of him. Ray Bolger and all those cute boy dancers “ is the best part “ in living color. 1959 !!
I think there is a color videotape of Ike in 1958, which is supposedly the first use of color tape. But once it was out, it was out. Surviving color videotape seems to be relatively rare, though. As you'll find on other posts, a good deal of them were recorded over and reused, as the tape was expensive. Thus hours and hours of classic TV are gone. I'm guessing this one survived because someone related to the Scheafer Pen company, which sponsored the show, preserved what they paid for.
@@dmiller1000 evening with Fred Astaire and the opening of a color t.v station in Washington introduce by Ike are the two rare 58 color videotapes that survive other than that it's kinescope, including several color kinescoped shows and 57 -58 black white videotape shows that survive the most
Good timing with this post, as Jane Powell just recently died. Interesting that the Sheaffer Pen Co. was able to buy the time, hire the cast, and produce the show all in order to sell pens at Xmas. Many of those pens at this time were still fountain pens. Fine writing instruments when fine writing mattered. Funny that the special was in color, but the videotape ads were in b&w. You'd think they would have sprung for the color ads. Interesting to note how much TV work Durante did in the 50s and 60s, on top of radio work in the 30s and 40s, stopping only when he had a stroke.
This was a special of Jimmy Durante's weekly variety show. Obviously an x mas special. I was going to say that Sheaffers cartridge fountain pens would leak, but, I remember it was Wearever that leaked. Obviously, Sheaffers wanted to save pennies by making the commercials black n white. Normally that was not n.b.c doing. Now if only the original videotape broadcast t.v remake of meet me in Saint Louie would pop up somewhere in a vault.
America so loved Ragtime Jimmy. And everyone in showbiz loved him as well. He was everywhere, all over TV. Until was wasn't there anymore.
This is making me smile! Many thanks!
Three greats, Durante, Powell & Bolger who always put a smile on my face.

Sunday Showcase, December 6, 1959 One of the early color videotape broadcasts that had B&W commercials.

@@michaelmcgee8543 So the Ike and Astaire tapes might not be the oldest color tapes, but the oldest surviving color tapes.
