    So guys, DS-1 or Ds-2?

    • @Tomislav_B.

      With a five different DS-1 and three DS-2 at home, I'd go with a DS-2. After 30 years of playing I'm still not the fan of DS-1 and never will be.

      i really preffer the DS-1 and especially on top of a clean fender amp, many people says it sounds better in an already pushed amp but i find that if you do that then it will get muffled and a similar sound to the DS-2 and on top of a clean amp it does really well its job and in general its a great pedal

    At the 11:00 mark, my take is that if you want to, a DS-2 can be made to sound like a DS-1, if you adjust with your ears and not trying to match where the knobs are at. With the DS-2 in mode 1 and having comparatively higher tone and lower distortion settings than a DS-1, the DS-2 sounds just like the DS-1 to me. So if you have a DS-2, you can get the DS-1 sound if you want it, but there are an extended range of tones that the DS-2 offers that the DS-1 can’t match. Perhaps there’s something that the DS-1 offers over the DS-2 with the distortion at 0 as a semi-clean boost, but that’s not what I’m using a distortion pedal for, I have others that can fill that role better.
    I watched this video to hear if I was missing out on something by having a DS-2 and not a DS-1, and I think this answers that question for me. Thanks!

      I ended up getting one now, and thinking about money management later. I've had my DS-2 for three days, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made 🥰 it's just about as crunchy as I like, with a wide range of control. It also works really well as a booster/soft dist for my Cort bass. I hope your videos will continue to inspire many creative folks!

    Despite the low quality audio, the DS-2 is better. More range and better headroom while retaining the characteristics and nuances of the original DS-1. There's a reason Cobain and Frusciante switched to the DS-2 later in their careers. The DS-2 is just better and Mode II takes it to another level.

    I never bothered with a DS-2 because all the gear reviews said KC used his in non-turbo mode and it sounded the same as the DS-1 I've had for 25 years. Clearly that was bad intel. Now I need to pick up the DS-2!

    I’ve always preferred the DS-1 and find it more versatile. I agree that the DS-2 is a little muddy while also lacking the “buzzsaw” of the DS-1.
    I adore my 1980 silver screw/long dash. Sure it does the Bleach/Nevermind/Incesticide tones off the records easily, but you can dial in anything from a light crunchy blues overdrive to Metallica with a DS-1 and some amp settings tweaked here and there.
    All that said, I also find it worth mentioning that despite a slight and semi noticeable difference in tone between my vintage MIJ and my two different MIT era DS-1s, that the difference in sound is minimal and I highly doubt anyone can tell the difference in a live gig context.
    Another excellent video from y’all! I love all your videos, but the grungier themed ones are always my favorite and I always feel super inspired after watching them. Keep on rocking in the free world, my dudes.

    • @WeAsACompany
      @WeAsACompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the DS-2 is probably more versatile but the DS-1 has something that only the DS-1 does. At least to our ears.

    This is interesting, I have DS-1 and DS-2 and I also did this comparison few times. When I compared them the difference between them is same as in your video but your pedals are more raunchy and grainy in this video than when I use them on my Fender Blues Deville 410 at home.

    The original Made in Japan DS-1 had the Toshiba preamp, not an opamp chip like the post 94 models. After 94 there’s been three different opamps, last revision in 2006. This is easy info to find. I have over a dozen DS-1 pedals, mij, mit, Keeley/SEM, Monte Allum, custom modded. They all have their place, I have to say though there’s something about the originals that’s hard to beat, even though the newer ones do sound very close. The Keeley/SEM DS-1 is just an amazing pedal, incredibly dynamic, cleans up well, that is one mod worth getting.

    Did you use a pre 94 DS-1? Boss changed the circuit after. I like the extra fuzziness of the DS-2, Kurt used it in Paramount concert.

    • @WeAsACompany
      @WeAsACompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      it's a Japanese black label but not sure if it's pre '94. Was the change a major one?

    • @filisteudorock
      @filisteudorock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WeAsACompany It's pre 94, Boss moved the production to Taiwan in 91 or around that time, same circuit though. After 94 they change the op amp and the diodes I think, check the ElectroSmash article. I had a 2005 unit, from what I remember had a lot more gain. Your DS-2 is also japanese? Unfortunately this circuit it's not so documented as the older brother.

    • @WeAsACompany
      @WeAsACompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@filisteudorock Thx for the info! Nope, the DS-2 is taiwanese.

    • @rabbitholeofmoxie
      @rabbitholeofmoxie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@WeAsACompany MIJ will always have the “coveted” Toshiba TA7136AP chip. In ‘94 they switched it after production moved to Taiwan. As the other comment pointed out, there is a super informative article on electro smash with a lot of details and history.
      As for the change being major or not, hearsay goes that it was enough for Kurt Cobain not to be satisfied with non MIJ DS-1s (as well as as the DS-2 set in the one mode) and what ultimately lead him to using the Tech 21 Sans Amp as his main distortion in the In Utero era after his MIJ DS-1 finally died for good in 92 at a show in Hawaii.
      That said, to my ear, though noticeable, it really isn’t THAT major. There are several AB test online that show how close they really are. I’d recommend the AB from that pedal show as it is one of the better audio samples of the two going head to head. As some one with a silver screw/long dash MIJ Boss DS-1 that I use extensively, I still take my MIT out to gig with most of the time.

    Great demo. I think you’re spot on with saying DS-1 cuts through better and that DS-2 is muddier. Can’t you adjust tone on the DS-2 at the same gain as DS-1 to make it sound closer in sound to DS-1? I think I saw you do this earlier in the video. And I think Turbo gives it more high end too.

    Maybe I´m a bit biased to give an opinion, since I have the DS2, and I like it because of its more rounded sound if compared to DS1, not in despite of it. The DS1 with the tone control maxed out is very ugly to my ears - otherwise is a great pedal too. : )

    Like other videos I can't see why people are saying DS-1 is better. They need to check Ola's demo of both. The DS-1 is a one trick pony. To my ears the DS-2 sounded just like Breed before the song kicks in. I've read many saying that it's a fuzz pedal such as the Big Muff. No it's not & I've never seen Kurt have a Big Muff on his board. The DS-2 sounds more like the Nirvana Nevermind album even if the DS-1 was used. I opt'ed for the DS-2 it chugs, Prince, The Cure, John Frusciante used it & it sounds like it gets really close to the DS-1 even though the circuits are not the same. With that said the DS-2 sounds better & I think it should do what the DS-1 does & more. There's a reason Kurt & John switched but I think people get too hung up on what was used on the albums not realizing they don't have the same amp & speakers. You can tailor & shape your sound with an eq with is a must have pedal. What I did notice is the volume/level on the DS-2 isn't as loud as the DS-1. I also don't get people saying they're running the DS-1 into a clean amp that just sounds bad & isn't the way the DS-1 is meant to run. You can get the DS-2 to do ok that way. I think people need to start using better speakers & not headphones or pc speakers.
