Ok. I know quite a bit about this. First, the Beatles were the first to use it for this…. Using the original Dolby 201. A three rack unit high piece. 2 channels. They would pull the Lo and Lo Mid compression cards so the effect would only touch the high end. Later, Producer/Engineer Keith Olsen was able to pull this info from George Martin. At least this is what Keith toLd me (I’ve collaborated with him on occasion.) Keith originated the mods in the 361 cards… again, bypassing the LO and LO MID compression portions of the circuit. You can hear the effect quite well on David Coverdale’s vocals on the Whitesnake albums he produced. Also, the effect works more by lowering the buss send to the unit, because it only adds to top end when a signal is below it’s threshold. When a signals above the threshold, nothing happens.
Gave 4 of the 361s, love them to death. One has the sr cartridge and about to replace that. But man do they sound well and I agree, you don’t need to eq much or not at all.
Producer Colin Richardson used/uses a similar trick with metal guitars... tracking the guitars through a Dolby SR unit set to "encode" to give some more bite.
Its look like a loooot of the eq of my old "studio standard" fisher speakers amp without the comp and expand ! Nice trick here sound dirty in a familliar and enjoyable way thanks Could we mod it to have only this specific saturation on the whole spectrum ?
I own 2 Dolby 360's (pretty much the same thing as the 361 in this use case). Glad to see you make a dedicated vid about them! I originally bought mine after learning Mutt Lange used to use the technique all the time and also that it's that added brilliant and amazing sparkle you always heard on Steve Perry vocals. Such an appealing sound/shine when mixed in. Just don't drop one on your foot (sooo heavy)! Great video as always dude!
Man, that thing is amazing.. it really fast forwards some of your work.. now that’s a hack!! Picked up the plug-in to try and man, even the plug-in does wonders. But will try to get my hands on one
How do you avoid latency? I'm using mine through with ProTools HD and it sounds phasey - hopefully I'm understanding the way you have it hooked up - I don't have a console - I'm mixing in the box. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
there are tons of pictures on the internet showing what are the resistors. I've modded mine that way :) But there's a lot more mods to do for make it even nicer!!!
I’ll be honest, I’ve been wanting a pair for a long time, and missed out a couple times on pairs for a down to earth price, and funny enough just a few weeks ago a studio in Vancouver had a gear sale to raise money for someone, and while I was enquiring about some gear I saw in photos, because I couldn’t make it in person that day, and was kind of a one day thing, he mentioned I just missed a pair of 361’s for $30. I basically cried lol! Anyway I just found a pair finally, but they are still a good chunk of change, but nothing like the silly prices people are asking these days. Also, to be honest, the overloud plugin sounds really really good to me, but I’ve never had a real unit lot compare. Have you tried the overloud, and the Audiothing? That’s another one I’ve heard good things about. Also, on another note, what mods have you tried with the Cat 22 cards? Have you tried the jumper mod? And are there any other mods that you know of for the 22 cards other than the vocal mod, and the jumper? Im just waiting to get my units shipped.
Hey so from my understanding, after reading the manual, though it expands, it masks because it fills the entire frequency spectrum. That being said, My initial thought was to use for mastering so that the entire mix can be masked. But i see that you used it on vocals, which is really what i want to use it for because i hear what it does and i am a vocal engineer mainly but i normally record vocals over youtube beats. My question is, can i add compression after using this unit. Will the compressor and further processing takeaway from the magic? Also i see that it has a record function and a storing option. Is it instant playback? Like can i run the mic directly from my preamp into the the dolby a 361 unit and then into my daw simultaneously, with minimal latency? Sorry for so many questions as i am looking into purchasing this unit and there are not many videos discussing this unit and its functions. Your video helped me to instantly understand what it does. Also, i couldnt hear your vocals with an instrumental so im not sure about this but does it do a good job of taming the low end as well in vocals? Like is this the answer to my muddy vocal issue? Ive actually found recently after over a decade of mixing vocals how to tame the muddiness properly with eq and compression. This unit seems to do all the heavy lifting. Is that so? Thank you so much for your time!
@@raykash1673 Personally I only use it during mixing in parallel so I can add as much or as little of the effect as I want. If your tracking with it I’d put it last in the chain before the recorder.
Yes I could of, but that doesn’t have the same excitement affect that the top end distortion adds. Also it would not compress & expand like this unit does.
@@RiotHomeRecording I hear you, my friend told me to buy some of these and use it for rap vocals. Going to get them, just not sure about what card to get. Thanks man
By far my favorite hardware units in my studio.
Suoer insightful! Thanks very much. What a beautiful lift and sizzle. So glad to have heard this!
Great sound. Thanks a lot for sharing. Now I know how the Mod sounds.
Beautiful on vocals, thanks for the demo

This is awesome information. Thank you!!!
Awesome. Thank you for the context and insight.
Whoa.. Super airy and beautiful! I need one.

really cool
sounds amazing
getting one, right now.
Wow. That sounds incredible
Thank you!
Wow what a great advice, thx from Germany:)

Recently I got a pair of it and it sound amazing!
Many thanks for this.
You’re welcome! Thanks

That sounds great!
Definitely impressive on vocals, but on the drum kit, beautiful as well, I hear the scene becomes slightly narrower, the HH moves towards the center.

Yes it definitely adds that sparkle and sheen effortlessly.
Would u set these up for parallel compression during the mix?
Absolutely I would, and I have.
GREAT JOB BRO

I have zero latency because I have it inserted on the channel of my console. And it’s not going through converters
Hi , great vid , so which and where are the resistors to cut as my cat 22 boards dont have numbers on them
there are tons of pictures on the internet showing what are the resistors. I've modded mine that way :) But there's a lot more mods to do for make it even nicer!!!

Basically im asking is it mainly for post processing or can it be used in live mixing as well?
there are no rules@@raykash1673
Also, i hear you say parallel. So can i not put it directly on the vocal track or would that not give me good results?
You can run into it directly or in parallel.
@@RiotHomeRecording where in the vocal chain would you place it when recording direct?

Do i need to mod my cat 22 card to achieve these results?
Yes
Will Dolby Model 362 do the same?
SAME QUESTION HERE?.. the 362 holds two cards right?
What kind of board is that?
1976 Mci 428 console I refurbished and modified.
Hey Steven, how can I contact you?

Couldn't you just turn up tha high EQ for treble ??????????????????????
