Someone wrote on Reddit the irony of the brother saying the alleged killer wouldn't hurt a fly when he was literally a bug exterminator. He stabbed her 59 times?? I know I probably sound awful, but I'm glad he was shocked and speechless when they arrested him. He doesn't deserve any peace after what he did to that poor girl.
@ melancholy melenie, that comment was especially troublesome to me as well. Of course a sibling would be astonished that their own sibling could commit such a heinous crime but it doesn’t negate that they did do it. Those closest to us are blind to the potential demons that live inside of their family member, whereas those without blinders are likely to see their demons quickly.
@N M just confirming/agreeing/adding to your comment. I think that's because most killers of this type are psychopaths and psychopaths are usually also narcissist. Both known for being extremely charming and able to fool people. Narcissist feel no remorse or empathy and unless you're fueling their current supply, you're disposable to them. It's actually very terrifying how easily a narcissist can discard a supply.

As for Karen Stitt, my heart goes out to her boyfriend who had to live with the guilt for 40 years. As Karen is a few years younger than me, I would have not given a second thought of walking several blocks alone, yet alone 1 block. As for Ramirez, I am so thankful that he had to finally face the brutality that he inflicted upon Karen, as he deserves to live out his life in prison and may his afterlife be spent in hell. As for Ramirez’s brother, he can f-off as NO one cares that he thinks his brothers arrest is a mistake, his brothers DNA cemented his guilt. His brother subjected Karen to be viciously raped, stabbed 59 times and the potential that Karen was still ALIVE with NO regard as to what he did to her at 15.
Though his brother ended up being scum, if he never showed signs of brutality, it makes sense his brother is absolutely shocked and in disbelief. I can see how that would be. I don’t blame him for his utter shock. If that were your brother and you’d never seen signs of anything amiss, you’d probably initially say the same thing. Some actions don’t make sense coming from an individual. I’ve had moments in my life where the rug was completely swept out from under me and what I thought was a good person really wasn’t. That’s what happened with the case of Gary to his brother. He pulled the wool over his brothers eyes for 40 years.
I really appreciate the amount of effort you put into closed cases. It highlights the importance of putting resources toward finding justice for victims even when decades have passed.

How do you stab someone 59 times without being full of rage and emotional turmoil? It's always the people you least expect who commit heinous crimes and get away with it then act like a saint the rest of their lives. How do you even fix your mouth to say your brother who is an exterminator wouldn't hurt a fly? Make it make sense! Imagine wrapping your hands with tape to prevent leaving fingerprints only to cut yourself and leave a trail of blood smh--genius that one. I think you should do a segment on cases solved only by genetic genealogy. That would be interesting to see how much progress has been made since this form of DNA technology has been discovered and made available. How many times does Cates have to confess to be taken seriously? Shame on authorities for extending the family's grief when they could have had closure much sooner.
Confessions can be retracted and if he retracts it and they don't have enough evidence or other testimony to support it, he could be found not guilty and unable to be put on trial again unless more significant evidence is found. Plus, people having episodes of self harm will say a lot of things that aren't true. If he was not of sound mind, it's not a valid confession, and even a public defender would push that hard. It's only the later confessions when he was found to be of sound mind, and when it was recorded that could be used, since they also had the family to back it up.
Exactly what Fran B stated. This agency did all the could do at the time, yes it seems like it was prolonged but they had to wait til they had substantial enough evidence. The prior times they did not. Also, I believe that if they try ONCE to convict a subject of a crime they cannot try them again. So they didn't want to waste their one chance.
